Preparedness and you - How prepared are you for a 30 day shutdown

CHECK, CHECK, CHECK, CHECK etc. .... ALL READY! ready for the next 28 day disaster for Ontario.


Now a real survival issue like a very large solar flare (seems to be 1 or 2 every 100 years, last real big one went in the other direction thankfully)... 2 30lb propane tanks refilled that I could use with Big Buddy heater. A few jugs of water and a 40 lb bag of rice I got from a friends restaurant when they closed (forever). 2 old lamps and 2 bottles of lamp oil, a solar/windup radio and a solar battery charger.

So incase anyone runs out of alcohol you can make some pretty decent homemade stuff pretty simple.

Any fruit juice without preservatives just need to add some champagne yeast EC 1110 or bread yeast if you like and a yeast nutrient like DAP (Diammonium phosphate). Wait 2 weeks and then its party time. I have 2 gallons of apple cider fermenting right now that I will be carbonating shortly and bottling for hard sparkling apple cider for Christmas gifts or if SHTF it will be all for me! But please know what you're doing before you start fermenting your own food and beverages. I haven't bought alcohol since I learned to make my own. Look up and know how to make your own fuel alcohol, you can keep yourself warm or run a combustion engine, make sanitizer etc.

Im pretty self sufficient, if shyte goes down I hunt and fish and make alot of my own food and items at home. Self proclaimed inventor and southern engineer so I like to think I could live off grid if need be. Dad raises meat and egg chickens for us, I really dont buy meat from the store anymore unless its some kind of pork I can make sausage kielbasa or other charcuterie with. Make my own bacon and ham, lots of venison, moose, trout, salmon, perch, walleye, crappie etc in the close families combined freezers. I have a large garden that I pickle and ferment the harvest and eat fresh while in season. Pick and pickle wild asparagus that grows in the ditches everywhere...always learning something new pertaining to homesteading, not to be a prepper but to have good quality healtht items I can be proud of that I know what ingredients were used in the making of.

Like fratri said I dont see any doomsday scenarios playing out that will wipe out civilization "as we know it". I like to be prepared but some of those full on preppers are delusional and they get satisfaction in hoping the world goes to shyte. Maybe they repeal normal life and have a hard time fitting into society so they would rather see everyone burn. I just like to be prepared in the event of a natural disaster I am able to continue living in comfort until normalcy is restored.

Funny you mention wild asparagus growing in the ditches, There's a guy in my neighborhood who picks some sort of weed from the ditch weekly in the nicer months I have no idea what it is because he doesn't speak English to explain it to me but he collects it by the grocery bag.

I'm pretty sure if I had nothing to do with my time other than survive, I'd be just fine. We live in a resource rich area and a bit of knowledge can help a person sustain themself for quite a long while. That is as long as nobody takes you out.... but hey, if society ever degraded to that level than I could accept my fate. Just like the rest of nature.

Funny you mention wild asparagus growing in the ditches, There's a guy in my neighborhood who picks some sort of weed from the ditch weekly in the nicer months I have no idea what it is because he doesn't speak English to explain it to me but he collects it by the grocery bag.

Probably asparagus if its in May and early June, otherwise alot of middle Eastern people will pick grape leaves for making stuffed grape leaves. We grew up picking asparagus in the ditches in Essex County where I live, its everywhere. We mark the spots on gps same as fishing and just return every couple weeks and collect our groceries. 1 haul we did this summer resulted in 30lbs of asparagus and just me and my dad picking for about 3 hours. I pickled 10 jars and would have done more but ran out of jars. You never had asparagus until you've had fresh homegrown or wild picked. The stuff in the store is horrid comparably.

There have been some almost as big as the Carrington even of 1859 and there was a huge one a few years ago that fired off at 90 degrees to us thankfully .... but the odds say there will be a hit big enough to mess things up sooner or later....

Until then I will likely stick to my LCBO orders, Dragon's Gold cider, Lost Craft revival beer and there are actually a couple local made sake, most of which you have to order, easy to do and have shipped to the local store for pickup. I also diverge into some odd items from around the world too now and again and have had some "never agains" and "must get agains"

Simple things like soap, running clean water and of course good food will be rare in the event of a C.E. size flare hit withing a few months or sooner so even a few "how to" books might be a good investment.
