Default Video: Joining The Deer On The Trail Camera (Ottawa - Dec. 26)

    Hello All,

Spotting the friendly doe and fawn while checking trail cams today, I decided to get in on the action and make a video together.

    Cheers,

    Justin

That is very strange behavior for deer !! Are these deer domesticated? No way would a normal deer allow a human to get that close to it.

That's in a Green Belt area just out side the National Capital. It's a place where deer have been living without fear for generations...it's like a Zoo. You can stand along the fencing and they will come up to you.

There is a place in Hamilton mountain area where you can get deer to practically eat of your hands.... They are technically wild but have learned that humans mean food to them.... This is from a few years ago

Nice and yes, I can also walk within 10 yards of deer in my backyard. The hand that feeds them.

As MikePal mentioned, this is part of the Greenbelt in Ottawa - a massive swath of wilderness that is open to the public and off-limits to hunting. There are no fences (for the most part in the Greenbelt) and deer are free to roam wherever they please. This particular location I am the only human. It is where I do some of my shed hunting and photography work, as well as hike and utilize the trail cams. This doe and fawn I have been photographing and filming since mid-July. Knowing the area I am at, I am the first and only human the little one has crossed paths with. And yes, the more time I spent with the two of them, the more at ease they became with me. And that has nothing to do with the cedar piles I put out - that only started up again for the winter as of a few weeks ago. Each deer is different. One or two bucks I can get quite close to; others flee the minute they see me from a mile away. It all depends.
So, to sum it up: not my background, not fenced in, and 100% wild deer. But, public land whitetail that aren't hunted do become much more comfortable with humans. Think Presquille Park.
    Cheers,
    Justin

By the way...there was a slight bit of sarcasm with the 'Deer Whisperer' title, lol!
