Blustery laker day

Got out this morning and decided to head for some bigger water in search of a lake trout. Hit the lake before sun up and was pleasantly surprised to see most of the slush from two weeks back had frozen solid leaving well over a foot of good ice. Motored down and across the lake for about 7km to find a secluded bay to hide from what the weather man was predicting.

Managed two beautiful lakers out of a good number of bites that were very light.

Sat out in the wind for the whole day, dark to dark watching the wind swirl snow around the lake while I huddled beside my fire. Should have left earlier.... over the course of the day the downward pressure of the wind on the ice flooded the surface turning 16 inches of snow to 12 inches of well hidden slush. Fought my way out through the shoreline slush just to hit the trail and have to battle 3 foot snow drifts all the way back to the truck. My poor kitty cat will need a thaw out day for sure.

All in all a great day with the two trout coming in at 27 and 30 inches, 7 and 10 lbs. Hit home and got to fileting. Not often you get to harvest trout cheeks!

Nice catch, well done. its scary how slush can pop up. Seems like you have lots of snow in your area.
Never thought of taking out the cheeks from a Laker, will have to try that.

With the snowfall yesterday we're sitting close to the two foot mark maybe a bit more in areas. The issue we encountered was the snow blew off the lake and piled up deep near the shores. Add slush to that and it made a slow go situation. Our tracks would look cute from the air given the number of times you would get euchered and have to back out and try another route.

That's a nice laker well done.

Yeah deep snow on the lakes never a good combination.
