Has too much time on their hands
Cabelas - New Policy and form - Buying Reloading Components
I dropped by Cabelas in Ottawa to buy some more glock 9MM mags (Magpull) @ $29.99 and tried to pick another 500 small CCI rifle primers at same time.
The had the primers in stock, when the young man came out with primers he plunked a Liability Form down on the counter and asked me to sign off on liability statement and record DL. Well, me being me, I pointed out under the law I am only required to show my DL (I even offered up PAL to proof the sale.) Note: Ironically - I didn't have to show any ID/PAL for Glock Mags...
He went to say it was store policy and they had incidents of liability when selling reloading components and in order to sell them to customers they are required to sign off this liability form to release Cabelas from any potential lawsuits from misuses.
Well - needless to say, I left them on the counter.
I have zero issues with store policies and support their right to do so 100%. I also support my right to vote and pay with my dollars and take my business elsewhere 100%.
I asked to speak with the store manager and he confirmed the policy - and I said this is going to hurt your brand in the community. HE asked me how - I said by default your policy assumes criminal intent for your customers - whether real or not. We legal firearms owners and under enough attack now, that this is just another assumption of criminality on the most highly vetted and legal section of society.
Deaf Ears...it fell on. Same goes for CTC Kemptville who when buying ammo requires you to provide DL to be recorded as store policy.

Your choice but I'd have too agree with their policy.
With todays society if something goes wrong the blame goes to everyone else but the individual. It be foolish for a business not to protect themseleves.

Just do what I do......show them your drivers license and print another name off on the form and sign with an X. They want information they will get it - wrong information.

Protecting themselves or a sneaky form of registration? We are continuously being asked to leave personal information everywhere for tracking purposes.
Good on you Mark for taking a stand.

Man I miss Gun Shows, pick up all this stuff no questions, no record and no taxes...Ahhh the good old days.
Liability for what ??? If they don't want to be liable they are in the wrong business...almost everything they sell could make them liable in the hands of a good lawyer.
Does appear to be a back door registration system.
I'm pretty sure CT has always had the DL requirements for Ammo, as long back as I remember. It was there under the old FAC rules.

hah, when i went in to buy my shotgun, i didnt have my drivers license but had other forms of ID, plus my pal. they wouldn't sell me a shotgun without a drivers license. i had to get my dad to put it under his name to get it. complete stupidness if you ask me. same thing with ammo when i go there. they wont sell it unless you show a drivers license and a pal.

Picture ID is needed, to prove you are the person on the PAL. So the new health card would work.

They need the address...NOT on health Card.
The CT system works great: I had to get my buddy, standing next to me (No PAL) to provide his DL for some ammo for me. The clerk put it in the locked zipper bag and he handed it to me (right in front of the her) and I went to the front and paid for it.
My wallet was in the truck, so worse come to worse, I would have run out and got it.

Would not your name and picture on the health card , match the name on the ID with the address? You do not have to have a drivers licence to purchase guns or ammo. Never had, or lost your drivers licence for ??? , so you can't purchase ?

Sounds a bit odd, I was once asked for similar information at a gun shop when buying powder, that dealer has since gone out of business I'm not sure of what became of his records. I recall going to a CTC once to pick up some pyrodex, I asked the attendant if he need to see my PAL, He said no, it's not ammunition. At gun shows if you're picking up components there is no questions asked. However if you pick up ammunition, they ask to see your PAL, which is a requirement.. It maybe that the liability form, that you are being ask to sign, was dreamed up to ensure staff at these businesses are actually checking your PAL. It may be just an in-house mean of ensuring checks are being done. Still you never know, it might be a back door approach to tracking gun owners, although one would think the licensing system would cover that. As to whether they could determine much from the primers you purchase, as to what kind of arsenal you have, that would only be guess work. Of course, not everyone who has a PAL necessarily owns firearms. However if you are purchasing components to load ammunition there is a pretty good chance you do.
