LoL. We are afraid of a gun a that hasn't killed anyone one in years. Why is it so horrible. Why did it get picked on when it's not out there killing people. What harm did it do in the last 50 years in Canada.

The process was:

Step #1: Buy restricted firearm

Step #2: Go to police station and see Firearms Officer. Present receipt with gun details, explain the reason for buying the gun, wait for him/her to type out short-term ATT.

Step #3: Go back to store. Show paperwork, sign book, go back to police station, present restricted firearm to Firearms Officer for examination.

Step #4: If he was an accommodating sort the Firearms Officer typed out a short-term ATT and you could take the firearm home after a warning not to take it to the range until the registration certificate arrived.

(Less accommodating Firearms Officers (e.g. Halton) would keep the firearm until the registration certificate arrived meaning another trip back to the police station to acquire a short-term ATT, pick it your firearm and take it home.)

Step #5: Registration certificate arrived in the mail and you could take your new firearm shooting.

Each registration certificate listed the reason for owning the firearm as shown here.

That was well prior to our service appointing police officers as AFO and PFO.
We had a civilian doing the job back then, but yes, that was the procedure back then...

You are more likely to be killed by an animal attack than ar 15 .

Dogs have killed more in the last few years then the ar 15 has in Canadian history. Wow more likely to be taken out by a dog then the most scariest gun in Canada.

Every transfer I did in those days was with a police officer. In the city of Guelph, the Firearms Officer also had other duties so it could be hit and miss whether you got your transfer done. He was a bit crusty but always fair. My last transfer under the old system was with Guelph OPP and it was a breeze. The most complaints heard were from shooters in Halton Region.

I find it difficult to understand all the prejudice surrounding the AR platform. Realistically, it is an evolution of the firearm, where once was wood, that looked good, but,that when wet could shift or crack, to plastic, which does not look as good as wood, but will not shift or crack and is waterproof as well. Where once we had to modify ourselves to our firearm, the AR platform allows for a more modular platform, where we can adapt it to our shooting style, not only that, but the uppers can be switched to other calibres as well. All in all, these evolutions make it a superior tool for hunting and target pursuits.

Exactly! Look at the evolution of bows and crossbows as another example.
Simple technological progression otherwise we would still be driving around in a cart pulled by a donkey.

But, it is political at the highest level.

Many, many examples, Swiss 7.5s, Swedish, Turk, German Mausers, Mosin Nagant, Ljungman even the old Remington 700 has been used by the military. Even .22 rifles for training, I know someone that has a Mauser .22 rifle with Israeli proof mark so it has definitely travelled around.

Well the Liberals have put small crossbows on the prohibited list in Canada and as now talking about making the Internet "safe" .... at this rate they will want the donkey and the cart too now that they have the "COVID Opportunity"

When you apply to acquire a restricted firearm in Canada you are asked by the Firearms Centre (operated by the RCMP) to provide a reason for having it. If your answer is not acceptable your application is not approved. It is not much different than in Australia.

Until about 20 years ago, you had to visit the local police station two, perhaps three times, to obtain ATTs and justify your purchase to the area firearms officer.

The AR-15 should not even be restricted in this country. It is a 5 shot detachable magazine semi auto, most often chambered in 5.56 NATO. This is no more dangerous than a BAR that is used for deer and moose hunting every year.
