cow tag
We are a group of 12 hunters bow hunting for moose.
We got a bull tag in the 1st draw.
On the second draw first choice one of the hunters drew a cow tag this hunter has 5 points.
We have one hunter with 8 points and 4 hunters with 5 points.
The rest of the hunters are bellow 3 points.
If he decides to take the tag his point reset to 0.
What would you do ?

He has 5 points, but in the group there are 4 other hunters with 5 points.?
If the bull needed a LOT of points, then 50-50.Group decision/preference.
If the bull was between 5-8 points, i would go for it.

You should claim it. Otherwise it is wasted - other hunters that wanted a tag will not be able to use it. This is the problem with the second draw, that tags do not need to be claimed. I hope the MNR fixes this for next year.

With 12 guys, and other guys in your group with the same or more points, I’d say take the tag. You should still be in a good position for a tag next year. That’s something you’ll have to consider for tags going forward. Another factor is the age of the hunter that got drawn…

Why would you apply in the second chance if you didn’t want the tag?

Good point. If its a last kick at the can for the tag holder he should take it for sure.
I'd say take it, then your covered for either adult animal. You may get another cow tag the following year but if not you have to be prepared to go a year without an adult tag.

Not his fault. People are doing this because they can with this new screwed up system.
The MNR must change this to make it mandatory for second chance tags to be claimed by a certain time, just like they did for the first chance draw. It does not make sense that they don't have to be claimed and successful second chance applicants will still get a point.
This way others will get a change at the unclaimed second change tags, either by way of a third chance draw or go in surplus tag pool available on a first come first served basis as they had last year.

It’s a new system, not a “screwed up system”. The first draw, I understand it’s best to apply for all options, but second application is to get a tag that you need to moose hunt. Applying for the second application and not accepting the tag could be denying a group to hunt at all. We will live and learn, it’s new to all of us.

Okay, how about “not well thought out” system, otherwise they would have thought about this. Or then again, they did, and it was planned like this to have less tags claimed.
I have been talking to quite a few groups that are not going this year for the first time ever, some the first time in 30 years, as they could not get a tag, and it’s maddening knowing that there are tags out there that will not be claimed / wasted.
Rant over. Cheers and good luck to those of you that claimed a tag.

Maddening? Not really. How is it different than drawing a tag and not going due to work/family conflict etc.? Happened all the time under the old system as well. I claimed a surplus tag 2 years ago then couldn’t go due to work. Took the tag from someone else then didn’t use it but such is life, don’t have the benefit of a crystal ball
