No you should not have to download an app make sure the card is inserted well and make sure the USB your plugging into works.
You would go into file explorer and look where your drives are and should see a new one.

Are you talking about the card reader or the SD card. Sometimes you get a bad reader… $15, made in Asia, what could go wrong?? Lol

I found that trail cams use a format 'VLC' and you have to download that app to see those videos.

vlc is one of the best video players by far. i use it on my computer nad my phone. its able to play videos without studdering and if theres a problem with the video or audio it will play right through it in real time. it wont stop int he middle of a video like other video players and say video failed or something.
as for the other sd card not working, did you format it??? some cards come formated some dont at all, alot of the trail cams actually have a function to format sd card that is inserted. try that.

^^^This. Format all SD cards. If you buy a different camera, card reader or SD cards then format them again. I format all new cards and swap out the same 2 for each camera I use. I had issues in the past using any old card in a camera but haven't since.

Does it harm sd cards to format them frequently. I like saving decent photos and reformatting the card each use so new photos are easier to find. I've always been told to make sure you power off your trail cam before removing the sd card as well.

No, but it's not going to make your pictures any better either.
I generally just do a quick format, unless I am formatting to do a new install of Windows.
A Quick Format is quick. To make the formatting process quick, the drive is not checked for bad sectors. Anyone looking at the hard drive or storage device would not see any data and assume the drive is erased. ... A Full Format runs an additional step that checks the hard drive for any bad sectors.
