A Very Big Mistake
80 years ago a small nation made a big mistake when it gave a sleeping giant a bloody nose - what it did was stupid beyond words - the giant got mad and kicked the s - out of the small nation - it ended up creating the most powerful nation that ever existed - unfortunately the giant has lost it's bearing and is gradually going to sleep again - the giant is no longer made up of the strong, moral and freedom loving stock - sad

United States
American corpses sprawled on the beach of Tarawa, November 1943
There were some 426,000 American casualties: 161,000 dead (including 111,914 in battle and 49,000 non-battle), 248,316 wounded, and 16,358 captured (not counting POWs who died).[226][227] Material losses were 188+ warships including 5 battleships, 11 aircraft carriers, 25 cruisers, 84 destroyers and destroyer escorts, and 63 submarines, plus 21,255 aircraft. This gave the USN a 2-1 exchange ratio with the IJN in terms of ships and aircraft.
I would say that was a bit more than a bloody nose.
You certainly kicked the s out of JAPANESE CIVILIANS, MANAGING TO INCINERATE SOME 800,000 SOULS.
In your more recent wars not a lot of positive news.
Since 2010, more than 65,000 veterans have died by suicide – more than the total number of deaths from combat during the Vietnam War and the operations in Iraq and Afghanistan combined.

Japan BTW is 7% smaller in land mass than California so I would say they did pretty well up against America. So much so that the Yanks were fearful of taking them on in the mainland, Operation Downfall was cancelled in favor of dropping two atomic bombs on mostly civilians.
If I were you Joe I would not be crowing to much about what your country did.
The sneak attack on America at Pearl Harbor was simply a copy of the Sneak attack by the American navy in its attempt to be a colonial power when they attacked the Spanish Fleet of Manila. They stole the Philippines from the
Spanish and then started a war with the Philippino's who wanted their independence and had actually helped the AMERICANS DEFEAT THE SPANISH INLAND.
So Joe when you invade another area of the World, half way around the globe from your own country, things will come back to bite you in the , something the Yank's have failed to learn over the years.

Gilroy - what do you think would have happened if it wasn't for the U.S. of A getting involved - you would be living under a communist government - much of the globe is free because of the U.S. - yes mistakes were made but the U.S. saved the free world - you should be thankful for that -

I much prefer USA as a global power to any of the alternatives. No doubt, 100% sure about that.
However, some people in the USA tend to forget they did not get where they are on their own. Other nations have made instrumental contributions to making USA a global power, including the making of those very bombs that were dropped on Japan. I would say the USA's biggest mistake over the past decade or more has been that SOME have become delusional in the sense that they think they did it on their own.
USA would have had ZERO chance to become what they are today without the help of Canada and Europe.
So please spare a thought about that ... let's not start thumping our chest, and use language that would otherwise insinuate that the rest of the world should be kneeling in front of the USA and kissing their feet ... we helped make you what you are!

What? So if the US did not join in WWII then the Russians would have taken over the world?
The US did not save the free world, the free world saved the free world, from all corners of it. Time for you to read a book or two Joe.

Japan attacked when America imposed an oil embargo because Japan would not submit to America's desire to be the dominant power in the Pacific. If oil producing countries (including ours) imposed an embargo on America their response would be exactly the same as the Japanese 80 years ago.

Gilroy - so your saying that the A bombs should not have been used even after it was estimated that 1 million casualties would be suffered invading the Japan homeland - is that what you are saying -
If you were limited to name one thing that contributed to the defeat of the axis powers during WWII any historian worth his salt would tell you it was the giant industrial power of the U.S. - more ships, tanks, planes were being built than the enemy could destroy -
And as far as the U.S. needing other countries to become a super power - come on give me a break - Europe was always getting into trouble and had to get help to survive let along help other others -

A dose of humble pie wouldn’t hurt.
