Anyone use a Hammock Tent when camping?

My son tried one this year borrowed from a friend of mine and really liked it.

I was looking at ones on Amazon in the 150.00 range but really don't know what to get since I have never used one.

It's next to impossible to buy something for this kid as he has the same hobbies as me and therefore really doesn't need any fishing, hunting or additional camping equipment as I pretty much have everything we want or need. We have half dozen fishing rods, coveralls,
camp stoves, Lanterns, firearms, bows etc.

So this is pretty much the only thing could come up with.

Seems to get harder to buy stuff each year.

As well now the daughter is asking me what she can get him for Xmas

The hammock calling is getting very popular nowdays, however it has own pro and cons..

In general selection options are:
Hot weather - you want bug net that is not tight with your butt otherwise your back will be bitten, so a cocoon type mesh is better..

Wet weather - could get a premade cover or just pull a $10 tarp over hammock

Cold weather - you want an underquilt. Sleeping bag get squeezed so loses insulation properties

Comfort - double more comfortable then single, but weights more. If planning to hike, it matters, if just camping, not really


Although, I am more of tent lover for it's season versatility(mostly camp in cold weather)

Our Town had 3 set up by the marina that were available for overnight accommodation. I was curious so checked them out. These were 3-person tents and hung 6-feet off the ground. The big drawback was that everything settled to where the most weight was, so you and and your partner and gear would tumble into the centre. Getting in and out was hard so getting up for a nature call would be hard. Anyway, the tents lasted one season with little use. Basically a fad concept but not practical.

My buddy farted once inside one of those hammocks and all you could hear was him screaming as he tried to bail out. He was terrified that his own bum was going to take his life during the night. We figured it wouldn't be that bad as it's basically already just a body bag. We'd be able to just grab the ends and pitch the whole thing into the hole we had dug. Lots of fun poking your budy with a stick as he hangs inside the hammock. We'd wait till he was asleep, then loosen the end knot on the head end anchor. You'd be back in your tent pissing yourself, as you'd hear him cursing as his head started sloping down to the ground.

My buddy and his G'son from WinPeg traveled by car to Nova Scotia (2 week trip) about two years ago and they used them every night along the way . Now he's in his 70's with a bad back and knees and found them to be very comfy and easy to use. It was summer, so no issue with cold and with a bug screen he found it worked very well. He gave them two thumbs up !!

It's really hard to buy my kid's anything as these days most kid's have everything. For my youngest who hunts with me, since we have pretty much everything we want for hunting and fishing and camping makes it hard to buy anything.

It is not a hammock tent but I slept in one of these and it was very comfortable - only complaint is that you need some extra layering so that the bugs do not get your in the back. I just ordered one to have for camping, canoe trips and fishing trips.

It's really hard to buy my kid's anything as these days most kid's have everything. For my youngest who hunts with me, since we have pretty much everything we want for hunting and fishing and camping makes it hard to buy anything.

This is exactly why my family stopped buying gifts for each other on the holidays. We just ended up with crap we didn't need and wasting money and causing stress trying to think of something to by each other.
Now if the odd time we find something that we know someone would really like we buy if for them just for no reason and just enjoy each others company on the holidays.

I usually tell my kid's I don't need anything or I would go out and buy it, they can spend the money on my Grand kids or their mom.
Sometimes they do buy something, they bought me some wild boar sausage that I like but am to cheap to buy.

Then I realized I like camping with my dog more than just completely solo, so now it collects dust and we share a lightweight 2 man tent. The Hammock option is great for canoe tripping though, very light and easy setup.
