This might sound crazy but get rid of Collective bargaining and job security. These two things has destroyed the work ethic. What's the incentive to go above and beyond in your work if the next guy gets the same reward for just showing up. Wage increases should be earned not just received because its another year.

Correct…and keeping up appearances has a lot to do with it. Most people could comfortably live in half the house they live in, and when vehicles weren’t considered disposable you could get by with buying something and expect to get more than 10-12 years out of it

It's all part of the world we live in today, at least in the North American world. Everyone wants everything and they want it right now! Big house, 2-3 vehicles, boat, 4 wheeler, snow mobiles, cottage, vacations, multi TV's in the home, electronic gizmos, the list goes on and on.... Both parents, (if there are two parents in the home?) have to work just to come close to achieving half of it or bury themselves in massive debt. Today's society is living way beyond its means and it cannot sustain itself. Things will get worse.

Yes... it does sound crazy.
Back to the OP ; Tragic as this event is it was preventable. We in Canada have proper Reg's regarding use and storage of firearms. So if the Americans want the right to bear arms they will reap all that they sow.

Well speak for yourself, I DO NOT WANT EVERYTHING. I have a big house but I wanted to raise three kids and as we had both a boy and girls separate bedrooms are a good idea. I do have two vehicles one is now 23 years old and the other is 19 years old. I do not have a 4 wheeler
I can walk, I have a cottage I worked very hard for with overtime done. I only have one TV as its all I can watch at one time.
My wife did not work after 8 years to raise the kids which freed me up to work longer and harder.
I run a credit card and can tell you after 35 years the poor bank has never made a dime in interest from me, period.
Because I am pretty frugal, I was able in the past year to help one daughter buy a home in Edmonton and my son a condo in Mississauga.
So if I can pull this off, how come people think nobody else has managed the same.

Way to complicated, do you really want Police officers, Firefighters, GM line workers, all at the whim and mercy of supervisors and employers.
Real wages for the average worker have not gone up in a meaningful way since the late 70,s, so all the middle class have been losing ground.
Your idea would be great if prices of everything stayed the same since the late 70,s.

It doesn't sound crazy especially when it comes to the union's. It is just one problem.
Also getting tougher on crime, fixing our schools why are they failing basis math skills. Pushing in more stuff when they can't do math lol. We also need a government that answers questions and take responsibility.

I think we're all guilty of this to some degree, whether or not we admit it to ourselves?
I think it can be changed but it would take a long time . The change needs to start with the people and the way the government is run. We need to be more thinking towards the people not the government's people and power . We need to stop blaming everyone else and end the left vs right war lol.

Guess we should put more regs on knives too right? Those teenage girls didn’t need a improperly stored gun. A boy who would shoot his teacher would probably stab someone he didn’t like.

Gilly: you and I are on the same page, but Bush is speaking in generalities about North American society, and he’s right
