    Default Gun Dog Training

I am looking at getting a pointer at some point soon but have never trained a hunting dog before. I am from the Barrie area and am looking for someone experienced who could help me out. I would love to train it for upland and small game as well as to retrieve waterfowl. I have done my research into the breed I want and they are supposed to be wonderful retrievers and pretty natural hunters but I still want to get it right

Have you looked into joining your local Kennel club or NAVDHA? They would be a great resource to get the mentorship you are looking for

I have thought about joining NAVHDA once we get our puppy. I was just wondering if there was anyone on here in the area that before I get that far I can get tips and such from

was expecting something along the lines of a Brit with spaniel in the name. Never expected some kind of english setter X german pointer cross. Interesting breed for sure.

Initially we came across a Blue Picardy at a park and I began looking into them and found the original breed being the Picardy. Everything I read from there it seems like the perfect fit for our lifestyle and I thought it was neat that they are still so few in North America and the world. And supposedly relatively easy to train hunting dogs I thought they would be a good match for me training my first one.

There actually is a author of an excellent book called Pointing Dogs The Continentals. His name is Craig Koshyk and owns and hunts with a Picardy. You may want to try and contact him for info on the breed.
I believe he lives in Manitoba. Joining NAVHDA is a good idea but if you are looking for someone to train for you there are some pro trainers in Ont. I think there is an outfitter just north of you that could train your dog. Wings & water Outfitters.

I would like to do as much training as I can myself. I have spoken with wings and water however about training before this because I had looked into them before for guided hunts. I didn't realize though that the author of that book lived in Manitoba. I had found it through my research on the breed. Maybe i will try to reach out to him.

    Thank you
