Default Exploring a New Lake in Haliburton

Tried out a new lake I hadn’t been to before in Haliburton this past weekend. Conditions were about as good as you could ask for. Above zero, virtually no wind, smooth and hard ice with a thin layer of powder snow on top. Best of all, full sun. Over the years, I’ve found some of the best lake trout fishing I’ve experienced has been on bright, high pressure days and this day would be no exception.

We set up in about 50-60 fow on a ledge near an 85’ basin. Immediately we were on a school of baitfish, small 6” cisco. Knowing the lake trout had to be close by, we waited and sure enough, in no time we were marking large fish on our graph.

The first half of the day, the lake trout were extremely aggressive chasing us up from 60’ down and some hitting right by the ice as I reeled up. Others took a bit more playing but overall the fish were very active and willing to chase. As the day went on, they became more bottom-oriented and down-sizing to smaller hardbaits and soft plastics did the trick. In total we landed 14 lake trout. A truly great day out on the ice.

Nice! Thanks for sharing. No ice what-so-ever down here near Windsor. No snow. Very wet - fields are maybe too wet for rabbit hunting. Another weird weather year for us.

Looks like a beautiful day. Congrats!

You know that's the best way to guarantee record ice next year

I have a buddy with $20K worth of snow machines sitting on a trailer in his driveway all dressed up with no place to go. EWven if he decides to sell them,he'll take an awful bath value wise. He's ready to tear what hair he has left out of his head.

Imagine how the dealers are doing, sitting on inventory and having to pay interest on what’s left and have to carry it over until next season. Those looking for a new sled might be a good time to wheel and deal.

Spent most of yesterday on-line and pouring over my maps. I could not find "a New Lake" any where. Even tried "Anew Lake" and a bunch of other variations. Any other names I could try?

P.S. Beauty fish and if I caught them I would keep the location secret.
