I actually got an invite to a club and was out there yesterday with my dog. Met a great guy with 3 spectacular beagles. I never realized that these beagle trials were that intense! A lot of these guys doing this head down to the states to run trials.
The property the club is on is maintained by the members to hold rabbits. Amazing job to keep cottontail on the land. In the 2.5 hrs I was there the dogs ran 7/8 cottontail! I'm joining as of tomorrow.

I remember about 30 years back getting invited to a beagle trial down by Clappison Corners near Hamilton, the guys were right into the field trials, points and judging. Lots of fun to see these well breed dogs in action lots of money involved in the sport.
My beagle at the time had no papers just a run of the mill beagle no big pedigree behind him but he would have made a lousy trial dog as he did not run true on the scent, he cut corners by air scenting and so forth so hopeless for the trial circuit but a great hunting dog that would run cottontail and snowshoe and European hare.
He got on a European hare one morning up in Beaver Valley near Collingwood and I had to wait about 3 hours until he ran that hare back close enough to me I could hear him, it would probably have taken a trial beagle 6 hours to do the same job.
I am pretty sure they only run trial dogs on cottontails as they would take to long on snow shoes.

I use to participate in this club and it is still active. Not sure if it is near you.
