I own a rifle that takes glock mags that can legally fit 10rds in a semi automatic rifle. Do I have to put a plug in my magazines that limits me to 5rds when hunting?

The Fish and Game act does not mention anything about rifle magazine capacity - and the regs are vague on it "Under the Criminal Code of Canada you generally cannot possess any clip/magazine that holds more than five shots for a semi- automatic centrefire firearm." If it's legal to own, then it's legal to hunt with.

The RCMP has a specific paragraph about your situation - which indicates up to 10 shots is legal. From

Magazines designed for one firearm but used in a different firearm
The maximum permitted capacity of a magazine is determined by the kind of firearm it is designed or manufactured for use in and not the kind of firearm it might actually be used in. This means the maximum permitted capacity remains the same regardless of which firearm it might be used in.

The Marlin model 45 (Camp Carbine) rifle chambered for 45 Auto centre-fire calibre uses magazines designed and manufactured for the Colt 1911 handgun. Therefore the seven round and eight round capacities are permitted.

Example 2
The Ruger PC Carbine chambered for 9mm Luger centre-fire cartridges uses magazines designed and manufactured for Glock and Ruger SR-series handguns. Therefore the ten round capacities are permitted.

Magazines for semi-automatic handguns which contain more than 10 rounds of a different calibre
Magazines designed to contain centre-fire cartridges and designed or manufactured for use in a semi-automatic handgun are limited to 10 cartridges. The capacity is measured by the kind of cartridge the magazine was designed to contain. In some cases, the magazine will be capable of containing more than 10 rounds of a different calibre. However, this does not determine the maximum permitted capacity.

That question should be asked of the RCMP, or a firearms lawyer. At one time, a mag designed to be used in a semi pistol could be used in a semi rifle, ie Benelli MR1 with a 10 round LAR pistol mag. Now, I think the new regs have changed that to close up this loophole. At least there was some talk of this change…..Also, Now, a mag that has to be pinned, cannot have just a rivet as in the past. It has to be limited to 5 rounds such that it cannot be easily altered. A rivet is easily drilled out.
The BS changes are happening so fast, it’s best to seek info from the proper authorities ! Better to be safe than sorry !!!

Could you carry a second mag and swap out as required.

I agree with Rick, should be getting this information from the horses mouth, not on an open forum full of ideas and thoughts. so here is my thought on carrying 2 clips, why not, I always carry 2 clips when hunting with a rifle that takes a clip.

There was talk about this “loophole” that allows a 10 round pistol mag in a semi centre fire rifle , was on their radar to be changed. I’d love to have a Benelli MR1 with a 10 round mag for plinking coyotes….but I’m not about to spend a couple grand and have it made prohibited. We’ll see what changes Pierre makes.

Something to note is while the mag may be legal a CO may not know that and charge you anyway. Canada's firearm laws are so convoluted even the cops can't figure them out some times. TC
