    Default SKS - mags ????

I'm interested in buying an SKS, but would like to have a detachable 30 rnd mag that is pinned to 5 rounds. I like the look of the larger cap mag, or even the ability to swap mags out, when at the range.

    Is this possible?
Do I have to change stocks to do this?
Have you done this, and where would I buy or order the mag from?

    Any help is appreciated.

    Thanks

Kukagami Jack's in Sudbury has kits to convert the stock SKS mag to detachable. Maybe they can help you?

I understand that if they are not detachable you don't have to pin them to five rounds.....As a plinker why not go for the larger non detachable mag?

Another one of those specific exemptions to the general rules, like the 303 SMLEs....

    That's my understanding as well. It's a semi-auto afterall.

A friend of mine bought a plastic magazine that looks like a 30 but only holds 5. It doesn't work very well - hard to get it to click in properly and doesn't feed well. Hardly worth the trouble just for looks, but that's just my opinion.

    OP, go onto canadiangunnutz.com

There's a set of discussion threads under "red rifles" where you will find more than enough info on SKS mags , stocks, etc.

It's a relatively easy job. And yes, any semi must be pinned to 5 rounds, period.

Semi-automatic centerfire rifle magazine in Canada must be limited to a maximum of 5 rounds, centerfire handgun magazines must be limited to 10 rounds. This is a general rule, there are some exemptions, the SKS is not one of them. The M1 Garand was not designed to use an enbloc clip with less then 8 rounds, so that is why the exception is in place for it. If you would like to dig up all of the exceptions feel free to do so. There are some centerfire rifles that use handgun magazines, these may be allowable at 10 rounds.
It is not the number of rounds that the centerfire can hold in the magazine but rather the magazine it self that is prohibited, for example if you have a 30rd magazine AK-47 magazine from somewhere or drill out the rivets on one in Canada you do not even have to have a rifle that will shoot it, that magazine is considered a prohibited device in Canada and you can be charge for being in possession of it.

In any regs that I have read, they talk about center fire auto loading rifles with REMOVABLE magazines being pined to five. That is why a ten shot mag is the prohibited device, not the rifle. Various old Remington autos had tube mags that are not removable, the same as the original SKS mags.
While these may have held more than five rounds, you could not drop in a new mag for a continuos barrage while holding off the good guys. This was the original purpose of the law.
