help needed heat signs
Hi All,
I am a novice at owning a female dog. She is 11 months old walker hound. I was away 2 weeks ago and came home to notice that my female has started to stop eating and my male that is tied beside her is showing more interest in her. He is sniffing her and constantly licking her and she seems to accomidate him. They can only barley touch each other. I don't see any blood from her or swelling. My neighbour has a male dog and he has not been over in a long time. My vet told me to pay attention to my male that he will tell me when she is in heat but that's all i have seen from him, he's not going wild to get her. Sorry for being long winded but is she just coming into heat or past or not at all? I am only good at cow repro need help.
P.S. DON'TWANT HER BRED

Some males will pay more attention to the girls long before they come into season, it could be days or months. The safest way to not have her bred is to move her to a safe enclosure.

Check her vulva. She can be in heat a week before bleeding starts.

A clear discharge can also indicate the is in heat or at the peak of her heat or just ending her heat.
I hope you have a HUGE chain on that nearby dog . They can figure out a way to get to a in heat. Other dogs can jump fences too.

Please note if you do not want here bred, then have her fixed. It is not your dog you have to worry about, its the other dogs you do have to worry about and the possibility of pups that you don't want.

Thanks for the reply's. I just don't want her bred yet, want to wait till next year after a year of running/training. I haven't seen any swelling if her vulva yet or discharge so she must be in the early stages and yes she will be locked up.

If she is ready to be bred and you touch her on her back her tail will automatically go to the side.

I have two females and one male. The male is a virgin, however he lets us know about one week before the females come in. Then he has another two weeks of moaning. I spayed my first female walker, works for some people, however I ended up ruining a perfect hound. She had 12 years of severe hormone problems, one in a million chance that I will never take again. I've owned 5 females since, kennel them separately and pay attention.
