    Default Complaint to SPCA

I am outraged - honestly. Someone took the time to call the SPCA and file a complaint that my dogs are locked outside on a continuous basis without shelter from the weather.

The officer showed up to my house, both dogs were inside - he saw no issues or signs of distress.

My dogs go outside on their lead for 10 minutes at a time, just to do their business - then they're back in the house.

Honestly, some folks just need to mind their own business. What it most likely was; was someone walking by the house (we have get quite a bit of pedestrian traffic) and saw the dogs on their lead, then one their way back from the store (or whatever), the dogs were outside again an hour or so later.

What concerns me however is; when he came to the door the puppy was currently in his crate and started barking and yipping, which he does when someone is at the door. He reminded us that the puppy isn't to be crated for longer than 10 minutes at a time. Really? 10 minutes? I find that interesting because all crate training information I've ever read state to get them comfortable with their crate, and that the crate can be used as a "safe" place to put the puppy when you're busy around the house, or away from home. I should also mention, that Dave is currently 20 pounds and placed in a crate large enough for a great dane (we got the crate from my mother who used to own a great dane).

Anyways, this may be just a rant - but, I'm outraged.

Freaking nanny state, stupid peta loving no brained socialists. Keep your frigging mind out my life. He would have had more choice words from me, like go to social housing and see who abuses the dogs. Really, this chit makes me so angry...

I had the SPCA leave me a note to call them when I had goose carcasses in my garbage. I called and she said she just had to follow up since someone complained. She understood there was a hunting season but said that they get complaints all the time from folks thinking theyre protected.

In your case they are also just "following up" as that is there job and government mandate. But only 10 minutes in a crate is insane and unreasonable. I would have asked him for a reference to the law.

I have a call in to him and waiting for his return call, I want more information about the law around crating. All the material I've read, and the information I got form the vet stated:

    - Use the crate for time when you can't be with your puppy, whether you're home, or away from home.
    - Don't let the puppy out when he's whining or barking - which Dave will do for up to 30 minutes at a time.

With our previous dog Jasmine, she had to be crated for up to 4 hours at a time, even at her old age of 16 (before she passed away). She would get into everything an destroy the garbage cans all over the house, and even once tore a hole through a bedroom door.

Misty is never crated now, even when we go out she has the run of the house. My GoPro shows (on several occasions), she'll just go lie on my bed and sleep the whole time.

Dave is still learning (although, he's 12 weeks old), and is crated a couple times a day for "quiet time" when we're home, and for about an hour at a time. He's also crated if we have to go out during the day or at night.

We also leash indoors as well - something I've always done with all my dogs - until they're about 6 months old, or until I feel comfortable letting them out of my sight. Misty lost the indoor leash at 3 months old, Dave at 12 weeks old is still leashed. What that means is - he drags a leash around with him while inside. It allows me to make sure he's not running off to a part of the house I don't want him in, and it allows me a quick grab if I need to get him outside for an emergency pee without fumbling trying to find a leash.

unfortunately sometimes you got to deal with people who think they know everything. Late one winters night got a knock on the front door by one of York regions finest. Seems there was a complaint of a barking dog and when he shown his flashlight in our back yard our dog started to bark. Told him don't shine your light back there than. Went on to say that it was to cold for the dog to be outside. Told him the dog never complained. Sat at the end of the driveway for another hour guess to see if she was the outlaw barker but to no avail. Next day guess what the local SPCA shows up saying that we left our dog out all night. Brought her in the back yard showed her the dog run, ample water, and a dog that was sleeping on the roof of her insulated doghouse. Needless to say nothing came of it.

Well, I know I've got no concerns - just nosy neighbours, but it would still be nice to hear what he has to say about crating my pup when I decide to go out for a while.

Sure, we all love our pets - and we make a commitment to them for 10-15-20 years, but we all need to get out and get on with our lives once in a while without them. If it's against the law to crate my pup for longer than 10 minutes then there's going to be an issue, I can't stay with him 24/7, and I have a life to lead as well.

I'll certainly keep everyone abreast of what I hear from him, if he ever calls back.
