With that amount of weight reduction I expected to see better fuel mileage

I've got one. 2004 with 230,000km on it. Love it, and will buy another.
There's lots of guys like me out there as well. For every guy that has a Nissan lemon story, I've got 5 for GM or Dodge. I've had nothing go wrong with mine except regular wear and tear. Plus two things. The fresh air damper in the dash started to go at 193,000, and was an easy fix. The exhaust manifolds were both replaced around the same time, as they had a known issue, I developed a small crack in one, so did both while I was doing it.
The 2016 is being re-designed with a 5.0L Cummins. I figure when I hit 300K with mine, that will be my next truck.

I'd get the 5 litre anyway, which gets the same mileage as the ecoboost.

Of course Fiat-Chrysler loves to use phrases like "up-to" when they describe towing and payload.
Nissan is flat out based on the truck you buy, no additional suspension work, or packages required. Ram? "up-to" is just over the Titans, but drill down, and actually start building your truck, and it becomes apparent that if you want to get towing and payload above what the Titan comes with as standard, you need to invest over $3K in the towing, and hauling package, otherwise the base 1500 with 5.7 is actually below the Nissan. Trust me, I looked long and hard before I bought.

The only guy I know who drives a Nissan actually drives the Armada SUV. It has been a great vehicle for him. Many similar components with the P/U. Ironically I also have a buddy with a Toyota Tundra and it has been an absolute lemon. In fact we won't even allow it to be used on our moose hunts anymore. All this to say that these days they are all decent and can get a lemon even with a Toyota.
I’m suspicious of people who don't like dogs, but I trust a dog who doesn't like a person.

Armada and Titan essentially share much of the same platform. Same as Toyota Tundra / Sequoia

Has too much time on their hands
I've been warned by a mechanic to stay away from Ford's Eco-boost (too much truck for the engine).

I had one as a rental a while ago. I liked it, but the engine cruised far higher in the RPM range than I was used to. ( my truck will do 90kmh and sit below 2000 rpm, the Ford was upwards of 3000). I also found the fuel economy ratings to be way off, and I don't have a lead foot.
