Careful around the ice this time of year!
Usually Sharon posts those warning, but this time she didn't...
I had to go for a swim today to get the pup out.
May be I will post the details later, but

glad you made it out safe... good reminder...
probably not a issue for you southerners, but up here we have a good crust on our snow, which can be bad for breaking claws this time of the year... happened with my lab last year...

LOL I thought about it. I'm trying to stay away from areas with ponds right now until I see the ice is gone.

Must be a Lab think. We had our chocolate in twice this winter, one front claw and one dew claw. This is in southern Ontario. TC

We almost lost our Springer a few years ago along the edge of a farm pond. Fortunately we had a good collar on him and my wife was able to drag him onto shore. TC

my vet said he averages a dog or 2 a day this time of the year with broken claws...
his advice keep the foot clean for a couple weeks... my respone... how the %^& am i to keep a lab clean on a farm in april LOL my lab is black, but she secretly wants to be a chocolate...

Has too much time on their hands
I hear you about the ice ,,I leave the hounds toe nails a little longer this time of year ,I have seen it make a difference helping them climb back up on the ice after falling thru ,,be safe Dutch

When we go out now my husband and I carry a rope. We haven't decided who's going on the rescue yet though.

Two years ago when our small munsterlander was 11 months old, he fell through the spring ice twice. There where gueese on the lawn and he chased them out on the semi-frozen lake that had been solid a few days previous. Luckily he was able to pull himself out with his dew claws. The ice was much to thin for me to attempt a rescue. Last year as soon as the melt started and the ice had water on it, he remembered, and stayed off the lake. This year he is almost 3 and the melt is late. I will keep a close eye on him and hope he remembers his close call.

A friend just told me how they had a dog go through the ice and they had 2 extendi leads with them. They tied them together and she crawled on the ice and pulled the dog out. She could do it, because she knew the pond was shallow. I don't think she'd go over deep water with this type of safety system.

oh btw, my older dog fell through too, trying to help the pup. She climbed out in no time.
