Pretty sure they were that low in 49 in 2009, although I can't find the draw results for that year to check.
Regardless, deer are greatly effected by winter. They had a brutal one leading to the low tags last season. This past winter in 49 wasnt bad at all. I expect by next year the deer population will have rebounded nicely.

Things aren't good, all over. My stompin' grounds dropped to 87% from 100% last year. For the first time in decades,WMU 73 has another cut back for this year, rumored to be down, again,to 70%. On the Turkey hunt,we usually see Deer on the edges of corn fields and inside bush lines, but, this is the first time there isn't "sign" anywhere. It looks like this past winter took a heavy toll.
If a tree falls on your ex in the woods and nobody hears it,you should probably still get rid of your chainsaw. Just sayin'....

I'll argue the numbers are still down from the peak of 2006

I hope Blasted is right. I didnt hunt 49 last year for deer because of the ZERO deer sign during the moose hunt (2 weeks before deer opener)
Still had 11 guys at camp that got SKUNKED. Seen about 6 moose and 5 wolves and couple bears. Seen some deer sign this spring up there back in April....But I doubt I'll be hunting 49 again this year....

Where I hunt in 42, we saw less deer overall, but both of us tagged out for the first time ever.
Learn all you can about nature. What we don't understand, we fear and what we fear, we destroy.
Teach a young person to hunt and fish, after all, someone taught you.

I have seriously hunted 49 since about 2002. The peak in our area (we pretty actively hunt about 2300 acres) from my perspective was around 2008. I myself saw 17 deer that season.

2014 all I saw was does, the weather was bad, and the only shot I got off I missed, this is in 53a. The cameras are out and I only have one doe hanging around and a couple of moose. Maybe things will pick up later and maybe they are better where we hunt.

Cant expect to much sightings right now with the does having fawns but by mid June and July they will be moving more.....i have hunted 49 for 32 yrs now and the past 7 yrs have been the best up till last fall.....never seen a deer at all while in the bush....changing things up this year and hunting a different area but staying at the same place....only a 20 min drive and in a different unit....greater chance of getting a tag there.....
