We used to light up a battery unit to give enough light to get the naphtha units running, new mantles, top up the fuel etc. A lot easier to flick a switch if you just need light for a few minutes...

Try dollar store glowsticks as a nightlight. They come with both strings and hooks so you can even hang them in the tent. If I'm camping in a provincial park, I leave one hanging in a tree by the kaibo so it's easily found at night.

I believe mine only has one high output led and a inverted cone shaped reflector and it lasts forever.
X2 - lots of hours on it and very bright. Still on the first set of D's. Costco sells a great LED lantern as well for about $30.

I have both, the mantles on the propane units suck.

Has anyone found mantles that last for more than 1 walk down the stairs?

They are so brittle now that they are almost useless.

I have the Coleman LED and find it awesome. You have the option of using 4 or filling it with 8 D size batteries. Puts out a lot of light and has 3 settings. Was gonna buy naphtha lamp lamp till I saw price for fuel. Probably gonna go propane instead as a backup but gonna use LED as the primary

That's actually an interesting comment...I wonder if the light from LED lamps attract more specific 'bugs' than the old white gas lanterns...

Or maybe the bugs that land in the gas ones burn off and die so it's not as noticeable? Personal preference I prefer gas.. I find the light to be "warmer" battery operated units have many more uses though.. mine floated.. and was water proof.. had a remote etc..

For people looking for tougher mantles... try looking here. http://products.peerlessmantles.ca/ Ships from the GTA for a couple of bucks... good prices

The advantage/disadvantage to the gas lanterns is the heat they produce... if you're out in the cold and get chilled they can supply heat to warm you up. I used one under my truck last winter at -30 to warm the oil when out in the bush.

I do believe you can find small solar trickle trickle charger units that you can plug small inverter into and charge the rechargeable lights.
