Ottawa police are reviewing how 911 dispatchers handle calls after a 74-year-old man who was beaten in a home invasion called for help — only to be arrested and thrown in jail for more than two months.

Just a reminder folks.... it was the Conservatives that made changes to improve what is allowed in Canada for self defense and citizen arrest... (nick named the Lucky Moose bill.... a start in the right direction atleast).

It is interesting to read the comments sometimes...

Madam Speaker, I thank the hon. member for Hamilton East—Stoney Creek for his speech on Bill C-26. ... I must vote against this bill because of my concerns about the expansion of citizen's arrest powers.

    Madam Speaker, ...

My response to my colleague is that, with the expansion of the rights with respect to defence of property, there is always a concern about vigilantism. I focused my comments on the expanded rights for private security officers, but this also goes for private citizens. The bill itself does not promote vigilantism, but the problem is that the public perception of the expanded rights of citizen's arrest does raise that flag.

The whole issue is this. We do not want to have happen what has happened in Florida, where people become emboldened, whether they have a gun or not, to think they can take the law into their own hands. We have a fabulous police service in Canada, starting with the RCMP.

It is imperative that we ensure we have laws that are clear for citizens and our law enforcement officials to follow to ensure the safety of Canadians and our communities.
    ...
As much as I would like to see far fewer guns in our country, we have to deal with the reality. Many people, law-abiding citizens, carry guns, and that is what happens when they think they can take the law into their own hands.

Hmmm..... I guess you think the 85 year old should have got into hand to hand combat with the intruder instead. The old lad wasn't willing to become a statistic, good on him. Molon Labe!

This just serves to show that most of the know-nothing boneheads only rise to talk through their arses because it makes it look like they're actually doing something to the hometown folks. Sometimes I wonder why they even bother to show up.

Well they do know what they want.... look at their comments, they want citizens to have fewer guns and citizens to not have more rights to arrest and self defense. They want us defendant on the police only!

A defenceless society that depends on the police who are not able to do their jobs because there not enough of them. I will defend myself and deal with the consequences. Simple.

Not just the # of them that could be a propel fj. There are many of us in rural areas where a half hour response time could actually be deemed very quick.

A lot can happen in half an hour. So I'm definitely with you on the self defence aspect if need be.

    Agreed trimmer!!!

And as to why they show up !!!
They actually believe they are much smarter than most of us and they they know best for us on anything from changing a diaper to flying a spaceship.
Typical leftist social engineering at it's finest, as per usual.

The part that has me worried is a population that depends on defense by police services that appear to be in the politicians pockets because "they owe them". WE're about to enter into a very dangerous period in national history when politicians control the police instead of the electorate.
