I'm not trying to highjack the post and realize that your heart is set on a Wirehaired Pointing Griffon --- BUT --- allow me to suggest another breed as well . --- The German Wirehaired Pointer ! --- Their appearance and ability are ~ similar . They may be more widely distributed . I got mine from a breeder in the Maynooth area (during the 80s) . It was the best hunting-dog I ever owned . --- Pointing , retrieving (land or water) , chasing , steady to the gun etc. --- Absolutely fearless ; HE was only 78 lbs. but "outfought" dogs that were 50 lbs. heavier than him . --- They are very family-oriented and aloof with strangers . --- I'm not trying to sway your mind ; however , I'm sure you wouldn't be disappointed . --- What-ever you decide upon --- GOOD LUCK . --- During the 80s they were selling for $750 .

Just starting doing my research on the Pointing Griffon and I remembered this thread. I'm probably at least 3 years away from owning another dog but figured it's never too early to get to know the breeders in the area.

If I settled on a specific breed I would not limit myself to Ontario.

There are no reputable breeders in Ontario to my knowledge. Best to switch forums to www.versatiledogs.com if you are serious about finding more info on Griffs.

You need to look at Quebec and New Brunswick. There has been some respectable Griff`s coming from that area.

I was at a hunt test a couple years ago that had a Quebec breeder. If I remember correctly he was a military guy? Anyway his dogs were very impressive to watch working. It's worth traveling to get the right dog. I went to Pennsylvania to pickup mine.
I’m suspicious of people who don't like dogs, but I trust a dog who doesn't like a person.

Could have been Gaby and Paige. They are just outside Fredericton (now). I went and met Gaby, saw his facilities and dogs, he was very helpful and I'll be working with him in the future, both through a new local NAVHDA group and one-on-one to help me move a long with my Brittany. Regardless, from what I saw, even though I'm limited in my experience, I think you'd get a great hunting dog there.

As was already said by Cass, if you are set on a breed that is not a common, best to consider a wider berth.
