Quebec has no special constitutional authority when it comes to gun control. They do not have a unique notwithstanding clause and are not recognized as a distinct society in the constitution. Ontario has the same authority to enact legislation regarding guns that Quebec does.

The difference is that in Quebec there is strong, sustained public support for a long gun registry.

Provinces do not have the authority to pass criminal law but they have the authority to regulate businesses and property. The federal government does not have sole jurisdiction over firearms. The provinces have the power to create gun registries and require the registration of guns as part of their general powers to regulate business and property.

Then why hasn't she done it yet? The provincial government has the power to do the things you're fretting about, yet they haven't.

It can't fall because of all the global warming. The hot air rises - just ask JT.

Did anyone else read that the Government is looking into if any copies of the gun registry are still around. Hmmmmmmm didn't I say that would happen???

If Quebec starts it's own registry to help soften the cost, I suspect Just will give them a few extra dollars. Your probably going to also see Ontario offer to "Buy" into this registry. Right now Ontario is just keeping quiet.

She will call it a tax not a registry. If at some point she feels too much pressure for some other scandal that surfaces it will be used to deflect attention. The PS unions will support it as it will create thousands of high paying unionized jobs. The bigger the PS the bigger her vote base. My guess is it will be introduced before the next Provincial election to change the channel on all the corruption and scandals she will be wearing. Trudough will help to finance it.

Everybody knows that there is a copy of the Quebec data being kept under court order while various appeals are decided. Nobody can access that data until the legal issues are resolved, and even then they won't be able to access it if the court decides it is to be destroyed.

Your insistence that secret copies have been kept is no more credible today than it was a year ago.

All they will do is create a whole bunch of ATT, storage, transport laws, enforced locally. All the PAL info is common knowledge. If they word it correctly, they will not even need probable cause or a search warrant. Hire a few by-law officers under public safety rules, conduct random inspections, a few road checks. Any violations will not end up as a Criminal Code violation, but a fine and possible confiscation until payed. If it leads to a CC violation, then she get a double win. And once your discoverd once, for any infraction, then you may be eligible for further inspections to keep the public safe. If they create a LGR, then same thing. You may say they can't fine what they can't see. So you leave 9 out of 10 not registered. They never leave the safe. You get stopped on a back road coming out a goose field. LOOK, my firearm is registered. Oh good they say, do you have any more, WELL no SIR, just the one. Well then you won't mind if we sent the by-law over for a random inspection then. And that my friends is how then can do it for almost next to nothing, and reap huge rewards.

I hope I am just being a glass half empty kinda guy, but this current mind set will set us back years. As far as the gov't sees it, no guns, no problem. The only guys who will suffer is the honest ones.
the idea if random unannounced "safe storage" inspections by local public service clerks is not a new tool if you look outside North America. just another cost either firearm owners or taxpayers have to pay. best of all, you can "enhance" the storage requirements to the point that you basically can't do anything with your firearms other than locking them up in the basement in a massive vault. just another cost you have to pay for your privilege to be a law abiding citizen.
the registry opens so many doors....

Um, no. That matter is still unresolved and the hard drive is still sealed by the court, according to news reports just last week.

Meanwhile, the Quebec government can look for all the secret copies it wants -- that doesn't mean secret copies exist.
