Why So Few Diesel Options?
So we just got back from Ireland where we rented a 2016 Hyundai Tucson DIESEL.
It was a fantastic trip (1800kms in 5 days, + 2 days sans wheels in Dublin) made exponentially more pleasant by that rental vehicle.
The mileage was phenomenal, and we only had to fill up twice. The low end torque was perfect for all the hills and acceleration out of all the twists and turns. And the high end HP was great for keeping up with the locals who view the 100 & 120kph speed limit signs as suggestions.
So, I get back to Canada and start looking into diesel SUVs thinking maybe I was just clueless and missed a selection of them.... But nope.... There's pretty much nothing aside from Mercedes.
Why is our market so gas-hungry!?

Because the price of gasoline has been way more expensive than here for decades. We will eventually get there when all the carbon taxes kick in.

GM (Canyon,Colorado) are starting to add 3L Diesel engines as options. Diesel engines,other than in full size pickups just haven't traditionally been big sellers in North America. Market demand drives option content.

Dodge and jeep have the Eco diesel but charge several thousand dollars for the upgrade. Last summer I was considering going for the diesel but changed my mind after calculating that the fuel savings by going diesel would require 200 000 km before I saved any money.
i have never kept a truck that long...
i do have a VW Jetta diesel commuter car , fuel mileage is good at 5.5L/100km but the same car with a gas engine almost gets the same fuel economy. Not sure going diesel was worth the premium sticker price but do enjoy 15000km oil change intervals when commuting 1000km per week.

What's the point of having an engine that gets 300000 miles in a body gets only 150 thou?

That's the problem. Many people never break even on the option upgrade $ when you calculate fuel costs. Quite a few Benzes and Audis are diesels now.

I just got a Ram diesel not quite 2 months ago, this last tank was getting 32.4 mpg, there's not too many gassers that can come close.

My buddy got one too and he gets amazing mileage. He did have an issue with the EGR though which is apparently a common problem on the Eco diesels. They get clogged but I guess some folks are doing an EGR delete to bypass this issue.
I guess the Nissan Titan now has a diesel and there is talk of an F150 diesel.

Are you quoting what the computer in the dash says you got or are you calculating the numbers yourself?
I know the computer in my car is a compulsive liar, but that may just be the brand (vw)

I can concur with the Eco Diesel. I picked one up and I average 9.0L per 100 K. For a pickup...thats awesome. Sometimes my results are better than 9.0L, but no too often.
Now that diesel is back to being cheaper than gas...I am convinced I made the correct choice.
