Thread: Tick prevention yet?

I'm outraged that in the US you can buy a Tick/flea product that works identically, in the Pet Care isle at the Feed store, for $20 for the year....but in Canada you have to pay for a vet visit..$70+..plus another $120+ for a product that contains the same chemicals and does the same thing.

Why are people so complaisant with this, it's obviously huge money grab by the veterinarian community. There is NO substantial reasoning for it.

    and I'm not alone...http://thechronicleherald.ca/busines...lea-medication

I think people need to wake up and boycott purchasing these overpriced products thru your vet and order them on-line. The same product shouldn't cost x4 or x5 more because you buy it in the vets office.

If your interested in seeing some of the background as to why these 'spot-on' products are controlled and overpriced, this is the reasoning.

    1. Depending on the product the online company will not ship to a Canadian address (I know many on the forum have a US shipping address but if you don't you're out of luck)
    2. More importantly there have been reports of online companies shipping meds made offshore so it is not the original product you thought you had purchased. I am sure the more reputable online companies are shipping original product, but if the price on heartwarming or flea / tick products is substantially lower than other retailers or vets ... I would be asking why.

That's very true and is true for any product you by online.

You don't have to buy from a US source to save money....this place says they will ship inside Canada at significant savings.

Some vets charge an annual flat rate of 500 bucks per dog which includes examination. I was talking to my neighbor and that's what her vet charges.

I just tell my vet I only want the meds so he charges the 57 or so bucks for the bloodwork (4D snap set I think it's called) plus the meds, so this season was a little more with Nexgard (139) plus Heartgard (90) plus bloodwork (57) plus tax comes in somewhere around 320! What a bargoon!

I have never ordered a prescription from any Canadian pet pharmacy. I was always under the impression Advantix II could only be prescribed by a vet. Are these knock off products ? I would be very hesitant to order online from a Canadian pharmacy for a product that typically requires a prescription.

    from their FAQ....

Does the petpharmacist dispense prescription medications without a veterinarian's authorization?

No! Any item with a RX designation is a prescription medication. We can only dispense prescription medications on the instructions of a licensed veterinarian.

If you are ordering a prescription medication for the first time we will be happy to contact your veterinarian for a prescription. If you already have a written prescription you can send it to us by email, fax or regular mail.

Does my veterinarian have to provide me with a prescription?

Section 26 of the regulations to the Ontario Veterinarians Act states:

    26. If a member decides to treat an animal with a drug and either does not dispense it or is asked by the owner for a prescription, the member shall give a written prescription to the owner or offer to give an oral prescription acceptable to the owner to a pharmacist or to another veterinarian in accordance with subsection 33 (1.1).

The College of Veterinarians has determined:

Where a client requests a prescription, rather than purchase a drug directly from the veterinarian, the veterinarian is obligated to comply with this request. However, the College believes that this regulation limits veterinarians to prescribing to a pharmacist in Ontario, and it is not appropriate to authorize a prescription from an Internet pharmacy.

The veterinarians responsibility is to offer to give an oral prescription to a pharmacist within the jurisdiction the veterinarian is located or, if this is not acceptable to the client, to give the client a written prescription. It is permissible for the veterinarian to charge a reasonable fee for this prescription.

The client is then free to choose how they fill the prescription. If the client chooses to attempt to have it filled by an out-of-province pharmacist, that is neither the veterinarians responsibility, nor the veterinarians concern. The veterinarian has simply fulfilled his or her obligation under the legislation.

Imidacloprid is effective for fleas but not ticks. You really have to watch the math too, some compounds can be toxic if your dilution is off.

That's why a liter lasts longer than the dogs.
