It was always illegal. the "illegal" section is only an summary of most frequently asked questions regarding legality, it doesn't outline every single thing that's illegal.

If i use your "if it's not listed as illegal, then it's legal" idea, then i can kill a bear by throwing rocks? or with a baseball bat? or frankly anything on earth? you're saying that EVERYTHING is legal that isn't listed specifically as illegal? then it's legal for me to run down deer with my atv? i don't get the point you're trying to make, the regs outline what you can use, and the alberta regs clearly state that there are ONLY SEASONS for bow and arrow, rifle/shotgun, and crossbow. nothing else. how is that awkward to understand, it seems pretty obviously illegal.

What i'm trying to say is that some of the posts are saying "it's not listed as illegal, so it's legal"
what i'm saying is that doesn't make any sense. Because, if that's how it works, then you'd be saying that i could use rocks, my truck etc... to kill a bear, since it's "not listed as illegal"

i'm trying to make the point that "it's not listed as illegal, so therefore it's legal" doesn't make any sense....

furthermore, my basic point still hasn't been disputed, the regs are very clear that there are ONLY two season, and spear is NOT one of them, therefore, this hunt was 100% illegal... So i don't see how anyone can defend this guy, in the legality of the hunt, or in how he acted after it.

"Archery Only Seasons are those where only a bow and arrow may be used to hunt. General Seasons are those where either a firearm, cross-bow or a bow and arrow may be used. "

    Default Bear Spearing was illegal

In Ontario a spear would be "illegal" according to our regs.

"Big game, including black bears, may only be hunted with a firearm (this includes bows)." page 75 Hunting Regulations 2016.

I didn't read all of Alberta but I imho the manner in which Ontarios regs are laid out make it clear.

Sounds like this is s grey area, like Sawbill said, that just fell through the cracks somehow. Lots of hunters strive to hunt by "traditional" means. Well.....you can't get any more traditional than a spear ! But IMHO, like previously posted, if it wasn't "legal" or had fallen through the cracks somehow, then they wouldn't be scrambling now to address the issue.
As far as taking animals by other means, animal cruelty laws have that covered.

I guess i just have a record stuck skipping in my head and i can't get past what i keep repeating, alberta states simply there are only two legal hunts, and spear is not listed, i don't see any grey area? are you trying to say that a spear could be considered a bow and arrow, gun, or crossbow?

i don't see any grey, i see very clear black and white, you can only legally hunt the province with those three means. where's the grey?

i'm stuck on this one, i don't have anything to add lol, i'm just repeating myself, sorry guys.... i just can't for the life of me, see the grey area people are talking about... the regs say flat out you can only hunt with a bow and arrow, crossbow, or gun.... do they really need to name every object on earth that isn't a bow and arrow, crossbow, or gun? the definitions of those items are clear.
