Hunters say firearms ban didn't affect hunting season

“If you’re a safe gun handler, there’s no reason those guns should be banned — there’s no justification for it,” he said.

Asked if the new firearms ban had any effect on the recent hunting season, Hatt replied, “No, I don’t think so.”

“Most of the guns that were banned are target rifles used for recreational shooting — the guys I hunt with use the same rifles they’ve used for the last 20 years,” he said.

However, the pandemic did impact the hunting season, according to Hatt.

“We have people from all over the province come to our camp. A lot of people decided not to come; a lot of us stayed in different locations, met in the morning and social distanced in the field, which was easy to do,” he explained. “But it did impact it — there was a lot people that opted out.”

In Sundridge, the Eagle Lake Gun Club has been operating for over 60 years and has over 550 members.

Peter Turnbull manages membership for the club and has been hunting in Almaguin for years. He said that in the Parry Sound-Muskoka region, the federal gun ban doesn’t have a big impact; however, the issue, according to Turnbull, is it doesn’t target the right group of people.

“There’s about 2.3 million people that are lawfully licensed to have firearms — we’re not the problem,” said Turnbull. “We go through extensive training just to be able to have that privilege.”

The firearms ban didn’t affect the hunting season in his opinion, as he said not many hunters would consider hunting with the calibre of rifles listed in the prohibition.

“For the most part, the AR-15 are .223 calibre, which isn’t suitable for bear hunting or any big game,” he said. “But there are cases in places, especially up in the far north, where people are using stuff like that.”

Echoing Hatt’s sentiments regarding the pandemic’s effect on the 2020 hunting season, Turnbull said there were less hunters at his camp.

For both Hatt and Turbull, the emphasis is on the safe handling of guns.

“We have to go through courses to get firearms, it’s very regulated, it’s very safe,” said Hatt.

Don't be too quick to judge,Mosquito. I've hunted the Almaguin Highlands around Trout Lake and Powassan for decades and been blessed with taking many Moose out of there. I know many people who have also hunted the area and I'm very familiar with members of various camps throughout the area. Bruce Hatt is right on the money with his assessment vis-a-vie firearm seizures because almost every one of them are small caliber that don't serve big game hunting well.The bigger story,though,is Covid-19 restrictions and guidelines have definitely been a huge game changer,at,least,for this season. It'll remain to be seen how the new Moose regulations AND Covid-19 will affect next season. That'll be a whole new ball of wax to deal with.

There's many 308 class cartridge AR's that work great for big game. Not all AR style rifles are 223.
The gun ban is nothing more than attacking freedoms of law abiding Canadians.
Mean while the shootings in the city streets continue on completely unaffected by the liberal ban.

Actually you are absolutely right! I was wrong when I read through by a quick skim and saw things like “The guns they’re banning are as dangerous as the people that are using them.” and assumed they were making negative associations (as is to be expected from the Star given past performance). Given their usual disdain for firearms, their owners and truth I assumed they had found one of the hunters that thinks we should all use single shots with a minimum 29.5"+ barrels and iron sights etc. .... there aren't many of the AR/AK platforms that appeal to me from a shooting/hunting perspective but I can see some wanting them and after seeing some shows on handicapped hunters thinking they actually need them. After a careful read I tend to agree it will probably disappear from the Star soon though.

I tried to book a hunt in the fall when it looked like I would have some time and found no luck and was told many were closed or restricted due to the Wuhan Pneumonia, so COVID has definitely had an impact. Also how many with the banned firearms would only own one firearm, many that would still hunt would just swear three times and go with the bolt.

After Canada was up staged by New Zealand’s popular gun ban on assault style firearms. The Liberals had to do something to reclaim some lost prestige. The story does somewhat fit the Star's agenda as it uses hunters to make the point that the assault rifle ban does not adversely affect hunters. It's the same reason the most gun-friendly PM in my lifetime, Stephen Harper, always referred to "farmers and duck hunters" when he talked about guns.

Was at TJ's pretty much every day for 20 plus years for his morning coffee . I'm pretty sure he was friends of the Bennett's my dad would know more but I'm pretty sure. . Spent way more time when I was younger up that way I remember making so many trails in the bush [emoji846]

His name was don had a full head of white hairs [emoji1787] for as long as can remember lol.

My uncle was just down the Rd and we had access to a couple of different properties could be gone all day in the bush. I think we had access to 700 Acer's and that was only a portion between my uncle and grandpa lol. Swimming at the hydro pond just a little north oh the good old days lol.

I am pretty sure 99.9% of hunters would not even have heard about this gun, let alone use one.

Hatt and Turbull shouldn't be speaking for there members when they don't know what they are talking about. A lot of hunting rifles are capable of discharging a projectile with a muzzle energy greater than 10,000 Joules and are now prohibited. I have seen pictures here in the past of members using AR-10's, Ruger Mini-14's, etc. that are now out of luck. Many members of both clubs were Action Shooting with AR-15's and now have there hobby taken away.

I don't get where they got the "10K joules" thing capturing the .458 WinMag,.460 Weatherby in a fairly wide net. Those are very popular big bore cartridges,granted,mostly for African dangerous game,but,still flies in the face of "we don't want hunting rifles..........". 10,000 joules is 7375 foot pounds. The .458 Winchester is under as is every other hunting caliber with the exception of the .460 Wby, .500 Jeffrey (12.7×70mm Schuler,) .600 and .700 Nitro Express.

You have no idea if the registry saved lives or did not, I believe it probably did. It also made gun owners responsible for their guns and assisted the police in returning guns stolen. When a minority of the vocal gun owners on here started fighting against the registry I suggested it was a reasonable compromise, giving the public a bone to make them feel a little safer.
Nope they were not gong to have it and Harper used this divisive little wedge to get into power.
I also WARNED on this very forum that if the registry went and the Liberal's were running for re election, they would DOUBLE DOWN and something worse would come in. Guess what they ran on banning assault type rifles and took the opportunity to give us that something worse. So well done guys.

The point of the article was that the ban has not had a significant impact on hunting or hunters. It does not address "action shooting," the effectiveness of bans, the gun registry or other broader items.

To address your speculations there is nothing I currently own on the ban list although have I owned some of them in the past. I opposed the gun registry as expensive and unnecessary but not because I live in a state of perpetual panic the government is going to "come around" for my firearms. I am strong supporter of firearms licensing.

I do not hunt currently with a .460WBY, .500 Jeffrey, 600 or 700 Nitro in Ontario, but know some who did, should they now lose there property and ability to hunt Ontario and trips to Africa? They didn't just ban these calibers' but several models of firearms that several hunters used in Ontario. Have you heard of a Beretta Cx4 Storm carbine, Ruger Mini-14, AR-10 etc. these were popular and now can't be used and again they lose there property.
As a firearm owner you need to stand with other owners weather you own or shoot there sport. If you don't who will be there when they come for your firearms. What makes you think they will stop now.

They can still take trips to Africa they just can't own those guns in Canada. Having spent time in Africa the above listed calibers are not in common use. The large bore calibers that are used there most often are .375 H&H, .416 Rigby, .458 Winchester and .470 Nitro Express all of which are still legal in Canada.

I have not and likely will not hunt Africa. I do aspire to own a collection of Weatherby Deluxe. Guess I can cross one off the list.

I am however no longer able to use a gun for coyotes. It did have better than minute of pie plate accuracy as well.

Does the banning of your rifle mean you will never hunt coyotes again? If not then it hasn't affected your hunting season which is the point of the article.

Well I usually won't try calling for coyotes until Feb March so in terms of timeline I haven't been affected.

However that was the only "small caliber" rifle I owned.

So short of buying another rifle ...

I guess I could shoot the 270wsm. It falls within the areas allowable rifle size. Seems like a little overkill, and my bullets went from cents to dollars. So probably won't use that.

If they actually offered a market value buy back program I would go purchase a new 223. Until then ... I am affected as a hunter.

I think the point he was making that a gun is a gun. We are not the same no one is the same and some just like them. Is it wrong to like something that is not hurting the public?

I did not say assault weapons but I did say assault rifles and I think we are know what we are discussing here. Erin O'Toole will steer away from this like the Captain of a ship trying to stay of the rocks. There will be hardly a mention in the election as its not a vote getter for Erin. He would also need a majority which I do not think he will get and certainly not on this issue. If its an election issue it comes down to how many Canadians think feel that citizens should have the privilege of owning an assault type weapon if it could compromise their own safety. High profile cases work towards the Liberals and against the Conservatives. We are simply in the middle of the fray. Hunters have consistently expressed the opinion that these guns are not commonly used by them and are not over concerned with the ban. The vast majority on this forum of hunters I believe fall into this belief.

I agree to a point,but,the folly of "It doesn't concern me at this point,so,I'm not concerned" will eventually come back to bite us as has been seen over and over,again with successive governments. As government becomes more and more leftist all the time,it behoves people to pay attention to the political consequences of simply shrugging it off. I feel that the gun ban will quietly go away and that the gov't will grandfather a large percentage of these guns to their existing owners. It is completely conceivable that if the government decides to offer some ridiculous buy back such as $1,500 for each gun (for round numbers) that many people will not comply 100%.

The New Zealand gun ban is only about 40% effective meaning 60% of the guns on their list have not been turned over to the authorities. I figure we will be seeing similar numbers in Canada as well especially in rural areas. I feel that the large percentage of non compliance will be driven by once non-restricted firearms now considered banned. With no gun registry how can authorities collect a firearm when you have no clue who has one or if/when when it has been sold, because individual sales records are not required.

Restricted guns will be easier to collect by authorities but I think 100% compliance is not going to happen - mid 90's at best. There will be acts of civil disobedience (and I would not recommend any of these) but there will be the "someone broke into my house and stole it", and I am sure someone will try the "I never owned an AR and I do not know why you have me on your registry as owning one". Leading to my previous point, if the buyback is not up to the true value of the gun I can see this happening. Here is my AR officer. That is all that I have left (a stripped receiver - that is the only part that is restricted). You see I was right in the middle of a custom build when you put the AR on the banned list. I sold off all the original components months back to fund this build and was just about to order all new custom components (bbl, sights, trigger, stock, upper, bolt carrier) then the ban took effect. You may even see the opposite take effect. People taking off all the custom AR components (barrel, trigger, slide, stock, upper) and putting back on stock components and then hand the gun it in to collect your $1,500. I do not think that the Liberals have taken into account the additional resources (time and money) that will be required to execute this ban.

Liberals know they are opening a can of worms on this issue much like their infamous gun registry that was originally going to cost $2 million but ended up costing $2.7 Billion and had ZERO effect on gun crimes in Canada. Billy states, "the cost for the “buy back” of roughly 250,000 firearms would be between $400 million and $600 million—$375 million for the guns and presumably the rest for overhead." I am very curious if Justin & Billy are ready, and have an appetite for, another epic government failure that will make the ill fated gun registry look like a tea party. If I extrapolate the numbers from the previous gun registry cost oversight, I highly doubt that Canadian taxpayers have an appetite to pay more for buying back legally acquired property from Canadian citizens than what they are on the hook for the COVID buyouts of $343 Billion.

Well I would say all the one's now banned, because the general public do not care about the nuances involved here, an assault rifle is an assault rifle period. The Liberal's know this and that is maybe why they were emboldened to do such a massive ban.
Personally and I have said this on this forum I do not like Order's in Council or the RCMP making these determinations on what is banned its not democratic .

Guys, the debate here is healthy but the reality is that firearms laws are not going to be a factor in the next election. It’s dear to my heart also but the truth is that Canada has much much bigger problems. Like a government that can’t say where they blew tens of billions in pandemic relief funding.

I was having a gun control/registry debate with a guy at work last year. Consider that nowhere in Ontario can you drive over 100km/hr (private tracks excepted), yet many cars are capable of twice that. WHY are they legal ? You can’t USE it. There are some great arguments made on this subject.

I think we can all agree that the typical (non hunter and non shooter) citiot does not know there is no such thing as an Assault Weapon in Canada, and in most cases does not know the difference between a restricted firearm and a non restricted firearm and the associated laws that govern their use. I really believe that a large percentage of them really feel that taking legally owned any guns, or any guns away from Canadians will somehow make them safer.

Now from my earlier post from Billy Blair - I think the Liberals have ear marked $400-$700 Million for this gun buy back program which we all know, like anything the government touches, will quickly balloon out of control. So let's call it an even $5 Billion for arguments sake (and I am being so very kind with that number). How do you think Biff and Muffy citiot will view this buyback program when they catch wind that their illustrious Liberals are giving legal gun owners hundreds millions to buy back legally owned firearms just so that we can turn around and go buy more legally owned firearms? 250,000 guns get handed in and another 250,000 guns get purchased (and this number might grow). I can almost hear their heads explode now.

Billy cannot do a PR campaign because they might have to use facts that support that this ban will have zero effect on gun crime and is nothing more than a very expensive hallmark moment paid for my the Canadian Taxpayer (yet again). I am already eying my next purchase........my semi auto rifle for a bolt action rifle or to use Liberal jargon my assault rifle for a sniper rifle.

The general public will not know that you have purchased another gun with the money you just got from the Federal government. All they know is that you no longer have one of those gun's the Federal government say's was a bad gun. So fill your boots go right out and buy that bolt action rifle and help out a small business owner. Or you could invest in the stock market and buy a stock of one of the arm's manufacturers. Let their heads explode. It was the cost of the gun registry that ultimately caused its demise and I agree the government estimates are far too low. Unfortunately too many gun owners are making inane arguments about "freedom" or "property rights" or that they need "assault rifles" because they are afraid of being herded into railcars.

The intelligent path for gun owners to fight these bans is to make the exercise as expensive and politically difficult as possible for the government and the arenas in which to do it are the courts of laws and public opinion.

Come on Terry. Even you must see the flaw in this.......the political risk is HUGE!! Firearm stock.......no sorry, not gonna happen it is way too volatile. Last year I bought Amazon, & Air Canada and they did very, very well. If your looking for a good stock might I suggest Boeing.....they are rolling out the Max 8 jet again

I find it funny that someone would use the term "intelligent path" and then goes to pin their argument on the term 'assault rifle'. You do know that there is no such term defined by the Canadian Firearms Legislation but many people keep on using it. Which is why I used the term in quotation marks. In the context of the bans it is a political term not a technical definition.

Not only have I attended a 3 gun I've shot it a few times. Didn't capture my interested. Seemed like a louder version of airsoft or paintball.

The problem with some gun activists is they get bogged down in silly minutiae. "It's not an ASSAULT RIFLE dumbass!" isn't going to win the argument for them. Explaining to people that billions of their money is being pissed away to solve a non-existent problem is a better direction.

Sat back and pondered weighing in on this for some time.

Did it affect me, yes. I could not carry the firearm that I wanted.

I spent the better part of a year and a half designing "my perfect" all around hunting rifle. I wanted something good for the close quarters bush that had the ability to reach out and touch something as well. Given my thoughts for easy to keep clean, short action, semi that could be handled easily in the woods as well as hold sub MOA groups I settled on an AR10 with wood furniture to "unscary" the unit and added a 22" barrel and 1-10 X 40 scope then engaged a Canadian group to do the build.

I was finally going to have the perfect big game all rounder, from deer to moose, 0 to 500 yards, no worries! Well, the build was complete, test firing showed crazy groups and the work these boys put in to the machining for my oddball caliber... it now sits in Limbo. A good chunk of change has been burnt on this on my end as well as the builders. I won't see a dime for the buyback as I don't own the unit, im going to have to pay the builders the balance just to see it destroyed.

The wisdom? It was an unrestricted firearm that was not mentioned previously by the current band of goofballs. The AR15 was said to be the target along with firearms used in Canadian mass crimes. As stated this build was started long before the speak of this garbage came out. Myself and the builders kept an eye on the ongoings and up until the day of this particular scams implementation there was no hint that this firearm would be on the block. No black stock, no option for full auto, no option for extended magazine, 3+1 capacity, fixed stocks, the action is the only thing thats truly AR anymore.

Yes, still going to hunt, but if I'm going to hunt the way I designed this rifle to hunt with other rifles it might be less ethical. Because you are ok with the idea of limiting Canadians to the use of sharpened sticks it does not mean that I am.

What is military style per se? The 303 British was a military gun, the SKS, the 30-30 Winchester, the musket! The AR 10 was never a military gun.

The BAR, one balsam needle and its "click". Strip and clean that BAR in 5 mins without carrying a toolbox and get back to me.

Even in this thread there are only two people claiming the ban affected them and neither it seems gave up hunting as a result. They either have or will use other firearms.

Hardline gun activists have taken various failed approaches to drum up support among gun owners who have little interest in the guns that are now banned. There was an inane attempt to suggest all shotguns with choke tubes were included, that muzzle energy limits affect hunters when the impact is only on a few rare calibers that are wildly-overpowered for Ontario game or that hunting will be seriously affected which is clearly not the case. Finally, they fall back on "your guns are next and if you don't support us none of us will be there to support you."

Wild accusations, insults and threats are rarely successful techniques to recruit people to support your cause.

I hade my eye on a Benelli MR1 for coyote hunting. Match it up with 10 round LAR mags and it would be a great yote gun. All the Liebral spin on “assault” weapons kept me from getting one. So far, Liar Billy and his band of nitwits have not banned the MR1.......yet!!

It was never used in North America aside from 18 rifles used in Canada which was the 10T. A Dutch group bought rights to the 10 and sent them to the Sudan and Portugal. Italy, Burma, Guatemala and a couple others used them for special police forces. The US went with the M14 after the prototype 10 had a barrel burst during testing.

We now use variants of the AR15 like the C7 and C8. Crazy thing about all this hogwash is that the Tikka T3 is a current Canadian Rangers rifle..... go fugure

I think trusty justy and Bubba Blair sat down with a bag of THC gummies and picked the banned "assault weapons" out of a picture book. There's no rhyme or reason to any of it. Figuring out this blunder is like predicting the exact path of a Tornado.

The MR1 would make a handy little coyote whacker. Given the bad taste I have in my mouth I can certainly see why one would be hesitant about picking one up.

The AR-10 used 7.62X51 mm ammo (.308Win). That makes it a perfect big game caliber. That rifle illustrates how out-to-lunch the rationale that hunters wouldn't use the rifle to hunt really is. The downside of the older rifles is that they were full automatic (select fire). The next generation designed for civilian use were not,not one bit different than a standard Remington 742 Woodsmaster except it looks "scary". Giving those folks who come to Canada from war-torn countries full credit for being as intelligent as they rest of us, I submit that they're well aware of the difference between "assault-style" (what a politically correct bullshyte coined term that is) and the real deal full auto combat rifle. They're not caught up in the nonsense because they're not the least bit fooled by semantics. I'm at a total loss to understand why people are so caught up in demonizing a specific rifle that works identically to your Remington 742 (except that an AR-15 fires a much smaller round). Otoole is considering banning rental vans. They have been involved in more mass killings than the ar15 in Canada.

The cross bow killed more human life than ar 15 in Canada . It has certainly killed more the bow in one place then the gun they banned ever did.

Well you can include knives, baseball bats and a huge variety of things, I was reading on some of the history of Canada before the white man, the real history not the dancing through the woods and riding unicorns sh** and we know knives and tomahawks were used at Lachine about 350 years ago in a massacre, most of the victims had moved to that area to get away from the Iroquois and the constant wars..... will they be banning bows, knives and hatchets/axes too or just requiring them to be registered and ATT required to take one camping or on picnics?

Already happened Terry - LOL. 3 years back with my camo'd Beretta 391 shotgun while I was set up in a field for a goose hunt. Now she was not concerned about my gun she was concerned that I was killing the rare and protected Canadian Geese - another stupid citiot moving to the country. Well the local coppers showed up asked me a few questions and said they needed to respond to a gun call. I asked them to remind the person that called the police that interfering in a legal hunt is a illegal and I have never had an issue since.

Where I hunt there are no houses.......just farms. On those farms everyone owns guns - yes, even black ones. If we are shooting in the back field they will usually show up with theirs thinking it is range day.

Well I guess the burning question is "are these experiences adding to the pleasure of your hunting day or taking away from it"

Bill C-75, currently before the House of Commons, calls for a whole raft of crimes to be treated under summary conviction.

That includes terrorism offences.

Participation in activity of terrorist group
Leaving Canada to participate in activity of terrorist group
Advocating or promoting commission of terrorism offences
Concealing person who carried out terrorist activity
Concealing person who is likely to carry out terrorist activity

These offences currently have sentences ranging from a maximum of five years to 14 years in prison.

Under Trudeau’s Bill C-75, that could be reduced to a maximum of six months in prison.

The changes being brought in by the Liberals allow for each of those offences to proceed via summary conviction. Under the criminal code, the rules are clear, maximum six months in jail.

I dealt with people like your wife's father some 45 years ago, whole housing projects with at least 15% of the occupants fully engaged in that behavior and many of the fully involved in the criminal lifestyle. It was generational and had involved at least one generation even before that, so mainly white welfare bum's.

In that time period we had every stripe of Federal and Provincial Governments, from Conservative to Liberal to NDP.

Harper's director of communications said last month the Prime Minister's Office had seen the letter but had nothing to add. MacKay's office also had no comment.

Bar association president Fred Headon said there are lingering concerns that comments made by Harper and MacKay have hurt the confidence of Canadians in the judicial system.

Simply because you have to look at the Canada wide picture.

You have to consider the fact that we are now entering a period of political unrest and the ban is simply to disarm extremist / militia groups and prevent an uprising. Nothing to do with gang bangers in downtown Toronto. These type of guns appeal to some more than others due to functionality. Personally, I have no problem with any on the list as I regard firearms as a tool and ownership is an individual choice. I rarely take more than one shot at a deer so a bolt action is sufficient for me but do accept other peoples choices.

It depends what you mean by "support." I belong to the CCFR and have donated in support of their legal action. I've done so fully in the belief that the banned guns will stay that way but if the current round is made more difficult and expensive it helps us keep the guns we are allowed to own.

Where the line is drawn is illegal activity or the implied threat of violence. The ignoramuses who demand non-compliance, shout "Molon Labe" or mutter about "cold dead hands" deserve only derision and ridicule.

FF I was in the project's for 15 years,but you got to remember Regent Park was just one of the projects in 51 division,we also had the same number of criminals in Mosspark project and St. Jamestown project.Things only got out of hand really badly when the foot patrol were taken out of the projects and nobody knew the bad guys this was around 2000. Everything spiked after that including all the homicides as nobody was keeping a daily eye on the gang membership.

BWT coming from Glasgow,s slums (murder capital of Europe) I thought Regent Park was a pretty upscale place.

What they are doing to beat this ridiculous OIC, I was just talking online to someone and they had bought another rifle because the one they had for hunting is on that list ... it affected his hunting since he had to wait for the new one to ship.

Not available to the general public. You need access to get onto the page that has the whole list including the new revisions.... so there are probably hunters that used firearms that would get them jail terms out there using them without knowing.

I wonder if the Star has done an expose to the effect of. Banning long guns has had zero effect on the shootings in the hood. Probably not, their intrepid journalist are likely too afraid to interview people in the projects.
