Excalibur Vs TenPoint

Hi all,

Posting this on behalf of my father.

Currently he has an excalibur crossbow and loves it, the only drawback for him, is the one he has is a bit long, he has to reach around the bow to get the draw strings as he has short arms.

He is selling that one to my brother and currently shopping for another bow. The dealer where he is, is trying to push a tenpoint crossbow and he just isn't sure.

Does anyone have any experience with tenpoint corssbows, any recomendations/comparrions?

Any info would be greatly appreciated. Tks.

I shot a tenpoint before...now i shoot compound, i absolutly LOVED the ten point! MUCH MUCH quieter then the Excal and very smooth! I had no problems with the TEN point!

I can't wait to see how this thread develops. This is my favourite crossbow argument.

I shoot the GT-Flex by Tenpoint, I have had no issues with it.

No matter what bow the guy is pushing make sure he gets the one that fits him the best, time to shop around.

Has much as Excalibur is regarded as the best x-bow out there on this site; Ten Point is often the top pick on other websites.
I wont argue which one is better in my opinion, but I think that both brands offer top quality products.

They are both excellent companies from what I understand, I've only owned the Excalibur but I contemplated getting the 10pnt before I decided to go with Excalibur. I assume the ten point is also a recurve limb rather than one of the compound styles?

I was shopping for an xbow last year, tried a lot of brands and end up with a Ten point. I really didn't like the size of the excal, and found the Ten point quieter and fit me the best of all. So far I had no issue with it. Btw, I don't need a xbow that can be roll over by a truck!!!

I think both are very good.If I was him I would get the one he likes the best. Excal is made in Canada though.

this is going to get good,

I sold an awful lot of excals and they come as advertized, simple reliable, great CS and made local.

That being said,after watching a friend get hung on everything in the bush during last years moose hunt, I want one of those ultra slim, narrow limbed ten point jobbies.

LOL. You know...this always happens to me - running over my equipment with my truck after it falls out of my tree stand. I'm sure it's a common thing for most hunters....

You'd be surprised at how often these sorts of things really do happen.

To answer the original post, both companies make excellent quality crossbows. I'd go with whichever one feels best to him.

Both are good bows with different strong points.

Any reason though for excluding the rest of the crossbows out there today?

What are the most important aspects your father looks for in a crossbow or liked in his Excalibur? Conversely what did he not like? This info would make it easier for us to narrow the field.

Well I cant have an opnion on tenpoint because I have never shot one or even held one...however I have owned an excalibur for the past five years and I would buy another one tomorrow if I had too....
I dont go away from what makes me happy...
I hear excaliburs service is second to none but I have not had to contact them yet...knock on wood..

I don't own either brand. I own a Barnett, which I bought used as a "starter" CB. I hope to get a couple of more seasons out of it before buying a new CB. I have handled both Excal and Ten Point. Excals are very light but I am not crazy about the width..they are super wide compared to other CB. The Ten Points are much narrower and not that much heavier. Given that I hunt most thick bush, wouldn't buy the excal... more hang ups and tangles in the woods...so I would stick to the sleeker TP if I was shopping for one today...

Anyone know why Excal makes their CB so wide?

Ive never understood "brand" loyalty :) If you think Excal/Tenpoint discussions are "good", you should spend time on photography forums where brand loyalist between Canon and Nikon argue/debate the tinniest of differences trying to prove one being better than the other.

Aside from the economical difference between EXC and TP I would prefer Excals because they are "meatier". TPs just feel dainty in comparison and thats not for "me". Some Nikon people think Canon consumer camera's like the rebel series feel like "toys", despite both being very capable.

At the end of the day if one of each were placed on a table, then someone blindfolded you and said......
Pick one, whichever you don't put back down is yours free.

would anyone care if it was an Exc or TP in their hands when the blindfold came off?
What would you be feeling/testing for while blind folded? Why put one down and step away with another?

The CB I bought off thi board from one of our members has worked out nicely.. wasn't expensive either (although I had to re-string it)... deer dropped in 20 yards.

Have you considered Barnetts? others?

Actually, if you follow the crossbow market quite the opposite has happened in recent years. Ten years ago Excalibur was probably the only good quality re-curve crossbow out there. In the last 5 or 6 years Horton, TenPoint, Middleton, Maximus and Barnett, to name a few, have all introduced re-curve crossbows to their product line. If anything, it's a growing market.

I would have to agree with this statement, for myself and many of my friends who hunt with crossbows the draw is a simple, effective and easy to maintain limb set and you cant go wrong with recurve limbs. For myself, a guy who bow hunts maybe 2-3 times a year and doesn't spend alot of time shooting, recurve limbs are the answer. I am attracted to compound archery and find it very interesting, I may even buy a compound bow in the near future. The thing that is stearing me away from it is cams, cables, timing wheels, tuning and all that nonsense that I just dont wanna bother with. I live about 4 mins away from a huge bowshop (shooters choice) but I dont wanna have to spend all my time adjusting, tuning and perfecting my bow to shoot straight. I love the fact I can dial in my Exocet 200 and pick it up every fall and go.

While I don't doubt a compound crossbow may be quieter and is smaller axle to axle, there is something to be said about a bow that you "yourself" can do all the work on with no experience needed. I literally picked up my Exocet 200 last summer and put it together 100% by myself, if anything needs to be done on it I can do it all myself. Trust me when I say these Excaliburs are "bomb proof" and just about as simple as it gets.

I have shot a few ten point crossbows and they did seem very well made, but for my money it is going to be a recurve limb crossbow every time!!! People here say "buy the bow that fits you best", I agree 100% with that statement, but when talking about a crossbow its much like buying a gun. You have to pay attention to the length of pull of the stock, consider what you will be wearing. You have to decide between thumbhole stock or traditional pistol grip stock. Shoulder a few crossbows, but Excaliburs come in all different size length of pulls, the 175 pound Phoenix feels way different than the 225 pound Equinox, your bound to find one that fits. I don't think that the 'opposite' has been happening. I think what you seeing is them just looking for market share, each of the manufacturers have decided to add a recurve to their lineup to appeal to , as Horton calls it :" for those who demand modern, dynamic performance but crave classic recurve design". I don't think there are, in general, very popular with hunters down south. Excalibur has been selling their bows down there for years and have limited success.

I have to agree that there has always been limited success with Excals in the States but I'm not sure it's a re-curve/compound issue. Excal has never had the marketing and distribution network in the States that they've needed to make a large impact there. It's just one area of business that comes with growth and they're well aware of their shortfall in that aspect. With Excalibur being largely owned by an American firm now you're going to see a lot of that change. There are already plans underway to focus heavily on growth in the U.S. by a group of people who have the knowledge, tools and resources to do just that but in the end it will be the consumer who determines the success or failure of that venture.
Just for the record I'm not anti "compound crossbow". There are some very good compound designs out there but I prefer a re-curve design if for nothing more than it's durablity, low maintainance and reliabilty. I shoot a lot of 3D and re-curves definetely dominate the 3D circuit probably for those very reasons.

Your father will be very happy with a Tenpoint crossbow, no question about it. If he has the money, open the wallet, go hunt and forget about it.

In Ontario...yes..because of Excalibur's dominance here, not so much down south where you hardly see them.

I shoot a TenPoint, and I love it! I've shot my buddies Excalibur, and it's also very nice!! Both are great bows, but what I like about my crossbow is the anti dry-fire mechanism, saved me a few times, and that its a lot more compact and to me, it's a lot more balanced. All personal preference though!

I have a compound and recurve crossbow. Excal Phoenix and Horton Team Real Tree Ultra Lite. I think both have their strengths and weaknesses. The new compound bows are pretty damn compact though. The Ten Points with the accudraw is a pretty sweet add on. Only problem I see with Ten Points is some cost over $1000 bucks and some even $2000. Excal can be purchased for under $700.

Thanks everyone for the responses and I shared the information with him. I actually headed down south this week for Vacation and he and my brother made the drive from out east and we met up and did some shopping, we checked out alot of bows, and he was still torn between 10 point and excalibur, in the end he went with the Excalibur, the tenpoint was of course narrower, but he likes simplicity and the extra strings and cams didn't really appeal to him, as well the 10 points (to me anyways and he agreed) don't feel as "balanced" as excalibur, the excals just feel like the weight is distributed more evenly and the 10 points felt very front end heavy, assuming this is the extra metal plating and the cams.

He found an excal that fit him perfectly no problem reaching down and drawing it back. Another selling feature for him is where he lives the excal dealer, who also has a range etc is just down the street from him and he's been dealing wth him and always had excellent service (never had to get service on his bow other then re-stringing) but he's built a relationship with the shop owner and should he ever have issues there's someone there.

I'm curious. You said he had to reach around to draw the xbow back. Is he just drawing using the string or is he using a c80cking aid like the rope aid?

I would sooner spend my money in Canada on a Canadian made product rather than send those dollars elsewhere.

We all know which xbow I'm talking about.

I'd shoot any of them, but if all were equal which in quality and preformance they are ( I'd kill anything with any of them any time ) Customer sevice tops with only one IMOP. One is not going to kill any better then the other one, Thats up to the shooter.

In fact it seems that the only x-bow guys who brag about the great customer service are guys with Excalibur's....it's like owning a Toyota..you have to ask who the service managers is, while the Ford/Dodge guys have him on speed dial. :D

I'd have to go with Excalibur alllllll the way.

But I did find it cumbersome in the bush with stupid twigs and other really annoying small vegetation yanking on my limbs.

I still would go with Excalibur - the simplicity of the design allows you to fix it on the spot - unless things really go south (i.e. broken limbs etc. but that just generally doesnt happen).

I could imagine the tenpoint being a real bugger (pulleys) if the bowstring snapped or frayed.

No big deal check it out after each season and send it out if something has to be replaced. It's like my truck, I can't fix it by myself but it's better then riding a bicycle !!!!

Funny all those cams and pulleys sure don't seem to bother the compound bow community, they are basically the same equipment and I rarely hear of Compound Bow Archers complain their equipment is always failing.

Seems like a silly argument, if they were a problem everyone would still be using recurves :)

That's because trying to achieve the same power out of a much smaller package puts a lot more stress on all the mechanisns involved. You're trying to launch an arrow at 300 FPS for example with a 14" power stroke as opposed to a 28". This is why you have a 175 lb. limb system as opposed to a 60 lb. limb system with a typical vertical compound. There is a lot more stress on pulleys, limbs, cables etc.. I've never heard of a compound vertical bow flying apart in the feild or on a target course but I know of several instances where it's happened with compound crossbows. One of the guys I shoot 3D with has had it happen three times. He's gone back to his Excalibur now.

Now now.....lets get one thing straight........that was a brutal comparison. lol

Excalibur is a freakishly precise and accurate tool. I can almost guaruntee that 90% of the opinions here (including mine) were formed just to justify and defend the first crossbow (or current crossbow) you use.

It is easily agreed upon, if you take care of any tool, it should last longer than expected unless there is a freak defect.

Compound bows and compound crossbows are two different beasts. TPM hit that one right on the nail.

The point was that in the event of a bowstring failure - uncommon with all CBs unless neglected - you would never get a new one on your Compound CB in the field.

Made in Canada doesn't matter anyway,who cares?? Stuff made in China is well known for reliability and quality construction.

How so ?? I have both here and the limb and cable assy look EXACTLY like each other, the x-bow is just a little more ruggedized..as TPM pointed out, because they are designed for more force. Doesn't mean they are more prone to failure, in fact probably means they are less so than a compound bow set up.

This has happened more then once.

And the other guys have help people who bought used in what way ?:thumbup:

Have him try-out an Ibex. Much shorter stock than the larger poundage Excal bow's. I had the same issues with the longer stocks & the Ibex was the solution......

Love that old chestnut; I haven't never had the need to change a string in the field in over tens years...can't see using that as a criteria for making a decision on a future purchase. It's probably not even an issue for 95% of Excalibur owners who have never had to change their string in the field.

Mike, it's only my opinion since I'm not an engineer but I think the crossbow manufacturers are really pushing the designs of some of the new crossbows to the limit, more so than the vertical compounds. I also don't think they are always doing enough testing on some of these higher performance bows before they hit the market. Most crossbows are designed for hunting which means they're probably going to see pretty limited shooting and used in that context they will likely give a hunter a lifetime of good service. The problems I've seen over the years are a result of high volume shooting.
As for the string change thing, you're probably right, it's not an issue for 95% of the owners but for those of us in the other 5% it is a considoration. I have had string failure on the target course and had to change strings on the fly. There is also the issue of re-serving. I only get about 250-300 shots out of a serving which means I have to re-serve several times a year. The fact that I can pop my string off in a matter of seconds without a press makes this a lot easier.

Please all remember that they are CANADIAN MADE. Now that even hunting licences come out of the U.S., you may as well support a Cdn. company!

Plus, they stand behind their product no matter what. (and did I mention they are Cdn. made!!!)

Interesting discussion.
However, some of us are happy with our "oldies"
I'm still shooting a 125 Lb. PSE compound that I bought used 20 years ago.
With my old Weaver Quick-Point red dot sight (pre-battery days) I can still get 2" groups out to 35 yards.
Why look for anything new?

I think a lot of people have experienced Excalibur customer service because the simplicity of the design and the style itself makes it easy to swap out parts without the need to buy a new bow. The bows made twenty years ago can be upgraded for speed by simply buying new limbs (carved tip replaced with mag tips). As well, many change stocks (for different colours or camo patterns), deck rails (changes the power stroke which alters draw weight and speed), risers (from cast to machined to forward angled), for whatever reason. A call to the company will quickly answer any questions you may have about the interchangeability of various components, and their cost and availability. It is very easy to "pimp" your bow.

Excalibre is top dog. Why not just buy the hand crank loading device if you find it hard to load.

Your absolutely right, things that really should matter are often the least researched. For years Excalibur even admitted they where a good 'hunter' bow because they dared not say they were the most 'accurate' competition bow. I don't know if that's been cured, maybe now with the faster bows they are doing better.

Huh? Are you kidding? Pinpoint accuracy and competion has always been a hallmark of Excalibur's marketing and and advertising and they've always been a major presence on the competion circuit. Their Apex model is a dedicated bow designed for nothing but target shooting. Despite the fact you may think no one outside of Ontario shoots Excaliburs there hasn't been an OAA, IBO or Canadian Archery Nationals title that hasn't been taken more than once by an Excalibur. Even outside of North America I know of competitive shooters from Italy, England and Australia all of whom use Excaliburs.

With noise level a re-curve is going to loose every time. Speed? Both manufactures make several models at different speeds and all that data is available on their websites. As for accuraccy, I would both Ten Point and Excal make bows that are more accurate than the guys shooting them. For the average guy you're not going to go wrong with either company. It's just a matter of personal preference.

I can't shoot more then one bolt at the same bullseye at forty yards for fear of smashing bolts together. How much more accurate do you need to be to hunt with? Or target shoot for that matter??:whacked:

There'll always be anti's on this topic...anti-recurve and anti-compound. Some make it their passionate mission to point out what they feel the negative points of the "competitions" xbow. Read all the reviews you can on the individual bows and try to stay away from the "xbrand vs xbrand" reviews... you'll just end up running into arguements. Plenty of great info on the two brands on the net. Make sure you get out and shoot them both and buy what feels best to you. I don't think your dad will go wrong with either brand. They are both top notch and for very good reasons. Good luck on the selection and let us know the result. :)

Mike, that's a great study of the technical specs of each bow but unless I was planning on only shooting a couple of shots in a controlled lab environment I don't think I'd base any decisions solely on those results. Give the bows to some pro-staffers and use and abuse them in the real world for a year then report back. Put each one through some real hunting and target shooting situations and shoot them a minimum of 1000 shots each. After that add reliability, portability, servicability and ergonomics to the review criteria and you'll get a more realistic assessment of each bow. I'm not saying all the results would change but dry technical specs don't paint a complete picture. Ya gotta get out and use them and use them a lot to find the real strong and weak points of each bow.
BTW, putting one of Ten Point's top bows against Excal's bottom of the line eco bow is not exactly a fair comparison. I'd hardly call it "unbiased".

First off the 'Stealth' is one of Ten Points mid range crossbow, check out the listings at Bass Pro.

I agree what your talking about is customer satisfaction, If you owned one before are you going to buy one again. Both Ten Point and Excalibur have sales around $7.5 million a year...so someone is happy with them.

But then there is blind 'Brand Loyalty'; Like the Dodge guy, he will always be a Dodge guy. Even though the Toyota is a better quality, more reliable, all round better performer...some guys will only own a Dodge. No performance charts or spec testing or quantitative reviews will ever change his mind. It's just what testosterone does. :)

For the record I have never said any of the crossbows mentioned were bad only that I personally prefer the Excalibur over the compound style crossbows. Mid range vs. economy level isn't a fair comparison. You also forgot to mention that Toyota trucks are far more money then any of the others available,about $15000 last time I checked.Maybe you think if you spend more money it must be better? You must be a salesman's dream come true!

I've got this one that has been used basically unchanged for over twenty years for $1000 or I have this "new" one that won't be around by next year because the company changes everything every year for $2000. Clearly the $2000 model is better. Maybe if Excalibur sold a model for $3000 it would then be the best?

When I posted the link, I was responding to OnGuards request for some quantitative measurements for comparison. I think they did a good job in what they looked at and how they were tested.

I can only guess that when they chose to use the Axiom, they had read the description of it from the Excalibur website..they advertise it's comparable to their most expensive options. :)

Of course you get get a better bow the more you pay for GS.....Duh..just look at the crossbows in the Excalibur line...they have econo model for $550 and a top end Eclipse for $1K...will both kill deer..Of course they will !!!

I found a big stick, I'll give this dead horse a few whacks. Nothing shoot's as good as as a crisbow cheetah.

Yup. I'm not knocking Ten Point, they make excellent crossbows, but this is a typical example of "lab test" verses "real world" test. Not an issue if you're doing a few shots at a test range but try carrying something that heavy through swamp and heavy bush on the way to your treestand (some of mine are up to a 45 minute walk from where we park) or on a 3D course in the middle of July in 30 degree heat and that quickly becomes a liabiltity. I'll be 49 in a couple of weeks and as I get older crossbow weight becomes a huge factor. Again, not knocking Ten Point or their quality but I don't see how they can make a 10lb., 10oz. bow "Top Pick". I would think that would be a big strike against it.

Compare the Excal (all recurve) to Ten Point's recurve, leave the training wheels off the bows.

Bought my GT-Flex while the dollar was high and the bow on sale! I only made my purchase after shooting both at the range the store operates... like the GT best!

I shoot the Ten Point Gt-Flex, never had a problem, buddy shoots an Excal, also never had a problem. We both use them for hunting only, sight them during an afternoon in the fall, then they are only shot to kill, so maybe 10-15 times per year, on a bad year.

Excellent points Doug. My mind is long made up regarding re-curve/compound sytems. With more and more re-curve designs hitting the market I'd love to see some comparisons between the different models and manufacturers.

I shot excals for the last few years and have switched to the wicked ridge series (by Tenpoint) the invader 185lb and prefer this bow over all others I have owned.
It has the built in cocking aid and a 12 inch power stroke, get him to try one at a dealer it should be easier to reach for him

Dereck, I saw the Wicked Ridge bows when we were down at a shoot in Michigan a few months ago. They look very well made for the money. I want to try one out sometime.

Yep not fair TenPoints lower end model is called Wicked Ridge
TenPoint makes one of the best cammed crossbows, Excal best solid limb, at least use to be, but since Bowtech (USA) bought them quality is already being downgraded for costs of production but still comes with warranty.
+ Excal you can easily change string, has to be done in shop with TenPoint (string & cable)
+ TenPoint has the best crank system on market, Excal not so much...

TenPoint has 33 patents & another 19+ pending, but really only 6 apply to the crossbow themselves

My dad has a Wicked Ridge. Awesome crossbow. It somehow fell and a one of the limbs started slightly delaminating. Ramakko's in Sudbury gave me a new bow for the season so my dad can hunt deer. That's awesome. I have nothing but good things to say about TenPoint.

And now with the Excal micro ? 2015 may get interesting at the ata show ? Know I'm waiting !

I'm curious as to how quality has been down graded since the Bowtech deal?

I shoot an Excal but never tried the Tenpoint. I can say the Excal is almost indestructable. I was riding on the back of a buddys atv with it slung over my shoulder. He was going at a good clip down the trail when I felt the weight on my shoulder disappear. I looked back to see my Excal tumbling behind. My heart sank. After getting back to camp I fired a bolt through it figuring it was going to be bad. The thing hit bullseye ! I couldn't believe it. It's a tank
btw it fell off because the metal sling pivot screw broke in half. Brand new sling too

I love the simplicity of a recurve. Having said that I have never owned anything other than an excalibur.

I bought a tenpoint titan hlx 3 years ago. Has been a great crossbow for me. I have harvested one 8 point buck with it and have shot at my target block hundreds of times. Alot of shooting with the kids as they are becoming outdoor lovers like their dad. I have done nothing to it other than regular mait ( wax and mineral oil). Took it back to the dealer this fall to have him give it a once over and he said it was in perfect working order. I really like it beacuse i am really confident with it, I can pound bolts into the same hole until they go through the block. My father has an excal and has had it for about six or seven years. Same story regular mait and i think one string change. I believe that both bows are great, both deadly accurate, and that your bow will treat you as you treat it. Find what is comfy for you and what you feel confident shooting. If you doubt yourself or your equipment, it can have a negative affect on your hunt.

To each his own. With that a being said, for me you can't beat Excalibur. Simple. Rugged. Reliable. And made in Canada. How can't you get any better?

Resale value to me is a concern, when it comes to bows.

Good read. Not too many fanboys. Lead me to some good research. I am looking into a new bow, I think I will get the Excalibur 380. Mostly because I like the simplicity of it and the fact that it won't be shot much and I don't want to tinker with it!

I have a 380 and love it.

I got my Excalibur Phoenix from a friend for $350.00 a few years back.
I shot 2 arrows on a 30 yard target when I bought it and they were right on.
I have never touched anything on it or unstrung it during the off season.
The first arrow that comes off it once a year is when shooting at a deer which I usually get.
I have recovered all deer shot with it except one when Coyotes ate it up overnight.
I'm so confident of it that the only time I shoot target on it is when I have new arrows which I mark with a Pentel marker once on target. It shots a consistent 2 inch group at 30 yards.
I believe Phoenix is at the bottom end of the Excalibur line.

I don't know of their customer service as I yet have to use them.

I'm sure others have their favorite I just haven't had the reason to change.
