Frustrating but at least there out catching them, maybe will deter a few people from doing it again....all we can hope for.......
They were around with the chopper hitting back lakes . Right on . I agree it would be nice to see " 0 " infractions but I'm glad when they catch those who break game laws .
TD
could you post the link to the article?
As Bic Mac stated, frustrating but also pleasing to hear. Theres too many people that dont get caught.
As a guy who owns property out there I'm glad to see it. It makes sure that folks who are out in the back country aren't tempted to over fish.
At least that they are out there and our money is going to good use.
I would rather see 0 infractions as someone said.

Here is the link. I hope it works.
If everyone did what they were supposed to do, no problems. Charges laid, obviously problems. Good for them for checking.
I get really PO'd when people think that rules don't apply when they're ice fishing. WTF!
good to hear that they are catching poachers
It's good to see, but if they are doing it by air instead of on a sled like they have in the past, no wonder why the budget is being used up so fast...Air time in a chopper is awful expensive...
It is very unfortunate that there is people out there ignoring the laws. It would be nice to see more MNR on the heavily fished lakes that are having fish numbers on the decline. I know Nipissing has some bad pickerel numbers, but I never run into MNR out there so that means the bad guys are not too worried about seeing them. I have fished there for years and ran into them twice. A blitz's cost would probably be more than offset by the amount of fines they could dish out. Hopefully in time it would stop poachers from thinking I won't get caught.
No sympathy for poachers. They drive up in $40k pickups and ride in on $10k snowmachines with $3k worth of gear. What do they need these fish to feed the kids? Stupid greed, pay up.
I had the mnr visit us on nippising this year. The guy was in our hut for ten minutes asking how long we were up and how many how big. The was asking same questions differently to confirm our story. I was with a cop and he saw tin so I guess he figured he must have been breaking some law!
The guy checking buddy's hut next door failed to notice 4 on the ice 1 in the pan. I gave the guys a lesson about possesion limits are daily not all u can eat.
Good to see them out
Oh ya
the guy said there were only110 c o for the province so your odd of seeing them r slim. Would probably get better results if they blitzed areas hard and rechecked two hours later
Thats actually true... In the last few years I've seen several cheaters who are fully equipped, machines, vexes, expensive gear, etc. They run four lines and If I mention it, they play dumb, but you can tell they are lying... Not people you would guess were poachers!
And according to the MNR over 90% of anglers don't poach, so that's good!
They were out on Aylen and Bark lake as well. Buddy bumped into them on Aylen.
Just heard of a group that got checked on a back lake. Never heard the sled coming. Nailed for too many lines, no fishing license. Let off on the sled insurance, and ownership. Probably would have been worse if they had any fish.....
The MNR should have waited till next weekend because Simcoe closes this Saturday at midnight for most species and the ice fishermen that need their fix will be heading up to the Haliburton lakes. In past years by I've seen many fishermen that usually only fish Simcoe with 2 lines on a 1 line lake and Lakers on the ice that are in the slot. Check the regs before you venture out onto the ice to fish.
Fish Safe and Often.
Poppa
How many lines are allowed when ice fishing Simcoe?
2 lines on Simcoe.
Don't forget, one of our COs has a fish sniffing dog, just for those slot fish that happen to fall into the deep snow.......
Thnx woodsman! 👍
Good on the mnr for nailing poachers and the like but when they start fining guys for taking a pee on the ice behind their shack or whatever, then that's just a money grab. I understand that technically it's illegal but they could probably charge every single ice fisherman out there , including guys in shacks who use a bucket and then dump it down the hole. For the most part urine is sterile so it really won't hurt the waterway.
Cheers
I have been cheeked 8 times an twice one day ,survived twice all from different MNR officers on Simcoe and half the time was just getting set up and not even fishing lol . So those who cry the MNR doesn't do squat your wrong and is getting old. Never have I been cheeked so much in a season, the norm is 1-2 a year and that's a year not 2 -3 month season . Last year was cheeked late at night in Haliburton by a undercover MNR ,glad to see them out with the no MNR mind set that seems to exist.
Seems hard to believe unless they suspected an angler of infractions and just came up with an easy charge. Remember the nailed Al Capone for tax evasion not all the other more violent crimes. The Mnr often know who the bad actors are but catching them .....well thaat's something else.
Dano.
Ps. They must have a HUGE problem in Haliburton to blitz like that.
Guess my wife and I were well hidden last week end on the ice. We didn't see any MNR or helicopters. We did see a group of families come into our lake. About 20 in total. Mostly young kids with their parents. Hard pill to swallow when the lake is no bigger than a glorified pond but hey, nice to see kids ranging from age I'd say 4 to 12 out on the ice instead of In front of the TV.
I got that from a good buddy of mine who fishes White lake and knows lots of folks in that area. It was mnr from Kingston area I think he said. I'll see if I can get more particulars. It has always been against the law but that's also the first I've heard of charges being laid. Maybe they had warned some guys before who didn't listen. Don't know for sure.
Cheers
What did they charge him with.....using an extra rod????
Did they save the evidence to test that it wasn't a dog? Must be a CO from the GTA....
Frank Zappa!!
I talked to buddy again and he confirmed that the pisser police were out on White Lake but he couldn't say 100% that they actually charged anyone or if it was just warnings. For sure though they had db meters and were checking and charging sled owners for too loud of an exhaust. Another money grab.
Cheers

It may seem like a money grab to some, but we have a neighbour with a "custom tuned exhaust". He is no longer welcome around our house. The factory goes to great lengths to build an efficient exhaust system that will give the most horsepower with a sound level that will not damage your ears any more than necessary. Then some clown changes it for one that "sounds better". They are no better than someone who cranks up their ghetto blaster in a busy campsite at 10pm.
I hear you Pat. There will always be some that go too far for sure. Specially if he's revving it up around homes. But it's not about sounding better so much as it is about performance for the guys that install them. They want to be faster than a stock machine. And from what I understand the mnr were going around and getting guys to start up their sleds so they could take readings and lay fines. That is a money grab.
Cheers
Could they actually make you start up the machine?? What if you told them NO? I am not aware of any law that says I must start up my machine for any Police or MNR etc. The MNR can search under the wildlife act. But I don't believe anyone can make you start up your machine.
We have a 200' hill just across the lake from our cottage. I can hear them talking thats how close they are. Some guy with a modified exhaust climbs that hill all day in the winter. That gets really tiring very quickly. In the summer he has a dirt bike and does the same thing. Glad to hear the cops checking excessive noise. Crownland is not the wild west.
I would just tell them that I'm impaired and not putting the key in the machine so you can charge me with impaired driving or care and control. don't think they can force you to start a machine.............but stranger things have happened in the great white north.
...Someone needs to be educated on the finer points of the law.
The days of having a few and then getting out on the sled, or taking them out on the sled with you are over pal. And I don't often openly insult people on here, but anyone who thinks that's ok behavior is an idiot.
...then again....have at it.....either the police, or Darwin will look after things.
Bluebulldog, we sold our machines becuase of that, seemed we would stop at this cottage ( a few drinks, stop at another , a few more, ) became a weekend occurance and became pretty obvious that someday you'll lose your license, so machines were sold, sold for a few other reasons as well, it became a very expensive sport for a few years , with the lack of snow , think the one year we put 2 tanks of gas through them.
I grew up in the days where that was the activity in cottage country. Then again a few things have changed. 1. There are way more people going up to their cottages in the winter, ergo more people on the lake etc. 2. Sleds are way more powerful than back then...heck, back then the king on the trails was the 440, and most of us were driving 340s, or 377s. 3. Back then, a few drinks, and being on a sled didn't have the crushing penalties that it comes with now.
The stock machines are already capable of over 100mph but OFSC trails have a speed limit of half that, with most accidents blamed on excess speed. The only place that they can legally drive wide open is on the lakes with the fishermen and their families wandering about. Boats have a maximum speed limit when close to shore, maybe sleds need one as well.
And how do you call someone that put poachers and people who drink beers on the ice or on a sled in the same bag? An idiot? Someone angry at life and close minded?
The majority of people that drink on the ice do not poach, tell me whatever you want that's a fact!
I have NO problem with those that take a beer with them while out fishing, as long as they can still blow well under the legal limit. Those who can't deserve to be punished for spoiling things for the rest of us. They are the ones who keep our liquor laws as draconian as they are.
