Some of you have some serious ignorance towards the Pittbull breed, and I'm not saying that aggressively it's a very understandable ignorance. Which most revolves around the media. The fact of the matter is that yes Pittbulls do attack people but so does every other dog breed out there. Newspapers and tv stations know that the word pittbull draws attention which makes them money, more people each year are sent to the hospital by chiawawa golden labs and mutts.Pittbulls also have the best score results in temperament testing. These dogs were bred solely to fight other dogs in England it was a big thing way back when but the dogs were also considered "nanny dogs" as the owners of these fighting dogs would often leave their dog with there children. And no they do not have " locking jaws" that is an old wives tale

I have seen a pit bull wander aimlessly around a baseball diamond and every mother and father grabbed their kids and run for high ground which was the top of the bleachers. Back in highschool we used to rescue fighting pitbulls. Once they were healthy, they were awesome pets. The problem is a real pitbull will die to please the people it loves. Once you teach it what makes you happy, it does it's best to make you happy. You take the stubbornness of a bulldog, the drive of a terrier that desire to please, then breed to enhance those traits, you end up with a very effective tool. A true fighting pitbull is under 45lbs at fighting weight. during a match, there are three people in the "ring" with the dogs, the owner of each dog, and a referee. Before the match, each dog is washed by the opponents ring man. If, your dog attacks any of these people, you loose the match. If you loose the match, you loose bragging rights and your line is useless in the fighting circles. It is in all the dogfighting communities best interests to breed non people aggressive dogs.
The people aggressive dogs come from crack heads, and wannabees who are breeding recklessly, towards an image. Although a 175lb dog is massive, it would have limited endurance in a fight and be beaten by a smaller dog with greater endurance.
If there were other breeds that could kick a pitbull's butt in a fight, those would be the dogs used consistently in fighting. There are demonstrations, and non serious fights where people choose "non traditional" fighting dogs, junkyard dogs, and mollosers but in the end it is always a "small" game bred pitbull that wins the fight.
...that survey is for fatality of dog attacks...I don't dispute the fact that they can kill, try searching just dog attacks...wonder what breed is at the top...sure is not the pitbull

Check out some of these underground vids from Russia. Thailand, and a bunch of other countries in the area. I never thought I'd actual watch them but one day I did and trust me, lots of pitts couldn't do a thing once a much larger and stronger breed had hold of them. I used to breed and train pitbulls. My 2 kids grew up with these dogs since they were babies. I obedience trained my dogs and showed them in UKC obedience trials in the states (UKC in Michigan and Indiana) and attained CD titles on them. American pitbulls are not recognized by AKC or CKC but are recognized by United Kennel Club (UKC). Kind loving animals but you have to be carefull around other dogs. If they weren't banned in Ontario I would have one now.
I do agree with the comments that more labs, golden retrievers and small dogs bite more often than pit bulls, thats kind of like saying cats scratch anyway so why not raise a lion. When these animals do attack, they are so powerful and capable its simply devastating. I have personally been exposed to very well tempered pit bulls, didn't make me any more comfortable around the breed in general.

I take the mutt JRT to the dog park often so he can burn energy and we can live with him. Many dogs at the dog park folks get tense about thinking they are aggressive ... they aren't . They are beautiful specimens of American Staffordshire terrier, American Bulldog, Dogue de Bordeaux , Canine Corso etc. If you don't know your dogs , these dogs can be scary for you.

What a colossal specimen. However I will echo the sediments said here that pit-bulls are "dangerous" dogs. I really don't care how well someone "trains" their dog, if I dont know you or your dog I will treat the situation with extreme caution, especially if its a pitbull. The breed was bred not to pranced around suburban or city life, it was meant to protect people and livestock, and that aggressiveness lies in every single pitbull, and if put in a situation it could revert back to those innate breed charteristics more so than other breeds.
I support a pit bull ban.

Richie, look up canine weight pulling. Pitbull type dogs do pretty good in those. They do agility games as well.
Dogs, no matter what breed, can be dangerous in the wrong hands. Cars can be deadly when the wrong person is behind the wheel as well. Your arguments seem based on emotions, and misunderstanding. Pitbull terriers, were not herding dogs. Perhaps you are thinking of the lines of American Bulldogs used in pit fighting. The American Bulldog was a herding/ protection/ guard dog used when the wild west was won. There were a few breeders ( and still are ) who use American Bulldogs ( at one time called American pit Bulldogs) in dog fighting pits.
Petey from the Lil' rascals tv show was a pitbull terrier. He was typical of the breed before crack heads and drug dealers took the breed in a non traditional direction.
