So I've got a question for the whole community here at OOD, what do the men and women who make up our out doors community do for work?
I'll start, i'm kind of a jack of all trades. Master of one though! I'm a part time farm hand, but full time I build farm fence, my company does all types of fencing. Page wire, oak board, chain link and everything else. I also weld up custom gates and do some heavy equipment operating. Alright y'all, your turn!
Mechanical Technologist working as a Mechanical Designer.
I love anything that can be built with any medium, wood is my favourite, metal is fun too.
Retired Military, now public service, plus own a small construction company.
Retired....to hunt and fish. In the woods or on the water 3-4 times a week.
Retired…hunting, fishing, photography and management of our 100 acre property for wildlife.

Spent ten years or so as a logger by winter carpenter by summer. Lakefront development supervisor now.
After grade thirteen spent 25 years as electrical service man specializing in energy management. Then a coronary resulted in surgery and four years fighting with CPP. Since then I have been doing "jobs of interest" until hips and knees gave out a few years back.
never considered any of it WORK.....
Mechanical designer.
Marketing Manager... various focuses on brand management, business development, promotions, membership services, etc over the years.
It's fun and easy work for the money... but i'm quite tired of sitting at a desk, and of city life in general.
Hoping to semi-retire young (before 40) and operate my own natural sugars producing company (honey & maple syrup) somewhere in any of Renfrew, Lanark, Frontenac counties, and run a self-sustaining farm.
Construction Project Manager. I work for a large construction subcontractor specializing in fabricating and installing custom architectural exterior products (ie metal, wood panels, roofing and siding) for institutional, industrial, commercial and high rise residential.
I studied architecture technology in college, and have worked in drafting and project Management since 2006.
electrician by trade but now work for a big Property Management Company in the GTA , lucky enough to be able to get out of the city roughly 45-48 weekends of the year fishing and golfing, work for probably the best boss who I've ever worked for, lots of freedom and sometimes don't talk to him for ( other than hello ) for a week at a time. often get asked when I'm retiring but when someone wants to give you the kind of money we get paid and really no physical work involved its hard to walk away from it.
Technical Representative for Canadian Distributor, metrology, gauging, test & measurement. In my previous life I worked in non-destructive testing, x ray primarily and ran the largest linear accelerator in Canada (at the time) for inspection of nuclear components for Bruce, Darlington, Pickering etc.
Accountant. In training for my CPA designation (the new Chartered Accountant designation). Spend a lot of time with school outside of work.
Architectural Technician for 10+ years working mainly on commercial and industrial projects but as of September the company is closing down due to the boss retiring so if all goes well between now and then I will be self-employed working on residential and small buildings.
retired - Special Education Specialist teacher for 37 years- 20 of those at the detention centre/probation parole

Wow ,, what an interesting group of people we have here.
I taught in the technical department of a small high school east of London for 30 years. I am one of the unlucky ones who was diagnosed with cancer when I was 59, and took early retirement at age 60. After 5 years of treatment I am now cancer free. I moved to Minden five years ago, and live by the Gull river. My main job now is very easy, keep my wife happy .... happy wife, happy life. I have a dock at my front yard, and go fishing when ever I want to. I also help the neighbors with lots of projects, docks, decks, garages etc.
truck/coach mechanic got into that after high school, been at the same place since i was 20 i'm 37 now i'll be there forever. lol.

Fresh air inspector for the government...collecting CPP & pension....RETIRED!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Mechanical Technologist. Working as Project Manager in a boiler and pressure vessel fabricating shop.
I have worked in paper mills, power plants, automotive manufacturing, and heavy fabricating.
Have had positions in maintenance, supervision, machine testing & analysis, Non-destructive Testing, Estimating, Purchasing and Project Management.
bin floating between carears for a few years, started off as a machinist, did my apprenticeship with a great company, but then we got bought out my a large company, just before the recession, and low and behold, most of us were standing in the unemployment line within the year, and then the company left town completly, heading for newbrunswick... during that time off i started up my own tree removal business, as well as took a part time job with my local school board as a custodian, then things picked back up and i went back to machining for boart longyear, things went well there for a few years, but then they fell into rough times, and again, me and 145 other guys were standing in the unemployment line. had kept my part time job and business though through that time, and ended up picking up a full time position with the school board as maintenance, so have just kept with this, less money than machining, but more security, and allows me more time to run my business, when i choose to lol

I worked as a millwright,welder/fabricator from the time I quit high school , i worked on a huge variety of stuff all over this province , I've been in the livestock raising biz , I've washed chicken hauling trucks and worked in a factory when in high school as well , now I spend most of my time chasing critters all over southwestern ontario for residential commercial and municipal clients and when seeding season is in full swing I work for an Ag input company blending fertilizer and keeping equipment in one piece and rolling ,I also have a position on municipal council here and also sit on the bod of the conservation authority, and my biggest job is being dad to my 4 girls

Tugboat Captain. I hold a Master 3000 Ton Domestic and a Master 150 Ton Near Coastal. Been playing around in the marine industry for over 40 yrs and am close to calling it a day. Joined the Air Force as a young man and I spent the next 25 yrs flying for a living. I retired to a job that saw me move into military flight test (The FTE in my name is Flight Test Engineer). It was a great job but too much time from home - I had already done that gig and it is terribly hard on a family never mind the fact that they always managed to schedule flight test during hunting season.
So I took a position with DND to do project management for various Air Force fleets. Its not exciting but in a small way it helps to ensure young men and women get what they need to do the missions they are assigned.
So now I spend my days flying a desk, pining for the outdoors. My goal is to get to a point of semi-retirement so I can spend my days building out of wood when I am not hunting or fishing with my young fella.
I have a Certificate of Apprenticeship in Tool and Die, I worked almost 4 years at a tool and die/plastic extrusion shop as an apprentice before it closed down when SHTF in 2008 (just shy of my necessary hours to go write my COQ Test). We specialized in vacuum extrusion dies making plastic frames for windows, sliding doors, weather stripping.
Since 2010 I have been working at a place called Farmbro in Mississauga that does work vehicle upfitting. We install caps and tonneau covers, running boards, trailer hitches etc on pickup trucks, we also do the Canada Post transit delivery vans, Uhaul pickup trucks and cargo vans, Canadian Pacific Hi Rail trucks to drive on the train tracks and do inspections and maintenance. We even convert small buses and ambulances from up north to be 4x4.
Quite the diverse group of people we've got here. Well id like to say thanks to everyone from the men in the military and at the DND to the guys testing fresh air ;) The country runs on folks like you, stay golden :goodstuff:
Lab tech. Nothin' fancy. Pays the bills, good benefits, lots of holidays now after 17 years and keeps me in my hometown close to family and friends. My commute is a whopping 6 minutes. The only downside is shift work.

Electronics Technician/Instrumentation by training. Also had a Gas Fitter and PC Repair Tech. Spent quite a bit of time as a student and recent college grad as a contract labourer in the mining service industry. I spent a year as an installation/service tech for a local consumer electronics company installing/servicing home theatre, satellite TV, and car audio until the company folded. Got on with a multi-national mining corporation 18 years ago. I spent 15 years in the converter aisle working with molten metal and now I am running a 60ton overhead crane moving 20-35 tons of molten metal around the building, working 12 hour shifts with 4&6 days off at a time.
My education has ABSOLUTELY nothing to do with my job aside from getting my foot in the door. Lots of time off for the outdoors.
If everything goes according to plan, 12 years from now, I will switch careers and become a fresh air inspector as well.
i also have a side career teaching my four girls, 11-19 years old as well as two nephews, 16 years and 14 months, to hunt and fish and camp and enjoy and respect the great outdoors. That is my most important career, IMHO.
Oh man i cant wait till i'm a fresh air inspector !

Landscape Technician/Horticulturist, Certified Building Environmental Systems Operations HVAC, BOMA , Municipal employee for the Municipality of North Grenville and currently Property Manager for the City of Sarnia.
Interesting to see all the extra training and education during our lives. I got out of high school (grade 13) with 4 sciences and four maths, along with a double French but could not get my diploma because I didn't have my native English. I then entered a field that required grade ten. During my 25 years at the trade (electrician) I also did plumbing, welding and took courses in landscaping, photography, gunsmithing and machining as well with basic computer. Most everything I learned has been of some value someplace even if a lot is now obsolete.
I was told that once I had a trade and my Interprovincial License I was set for life, but I was off work for a few years after my heart surgery, and when I tried to renew my license was told that I would have to go thru my apprenticeship again and retake the tests...
Ex military, can't get away from it, now keeping the ranges safe.

12 years military was the second youngest Canadian solder at the time ran the 70s Olympic torch from oromocto to Fredericton-2 years oil rigs- two years logger-4 years carnie-then 30 or so other various jobs from loading planes with food to cleaning the interior of oil refinery tanks and almost every type of construction as a helper. now an on road supervisor for municipal transit for 18 years. retire in 7 more years.
Retired at 55 from Bell with 38 years...worked in Louisana for the Katrina storm for 8 months..then to Fort Lauderdale for 3 months and all over Quebec and Ontario..Now I play in my heated garage..set up with TV and HEAT.....And then get rady for the hunting and fishing seasons..
Service tech/foreman for a foundation repair, basement waterproofing and crawl space company.
I've been a teacher for 7 years. That last few I've been doing grade 8. Great career for fishing, not so much for hunting camps etc
Retired for over 20 years now - I do what I want when I want to - and if I don't want to - I don't do it - also am a master gardener, fisherman, hunter and firewood cutter - currently I specialize in passing on my experience and wealth of knowledge to my friends on OOD - I'm not a lawyer, doctor, priest or politician but I did stay at a Holiday Inn one night many years ago -
Trading, securities finance, derivatives, structured products (think the things that get all the bad press) . Have worked at the big banks and a couple foreign banks, but the past 18yrs a smaller proprietary firm. Have been in the industry a long, long time. Long before everything was computerized. :) Some of the favorite memories were flying to MTL or NY with 100million and more in bearer bonds/coupons in a briefcase.
Sometimes wonder if I made the right decisions. ;)
JBen my brother in law is a trader for a major bank in TO. Definitely a very unusual life with lots of stress. He is 54 years old and is ready to retire I would think within the next few years.

I was told I was a walking heart attack at 39. Back in those days I was involved with Futures, in the office before 7am and home at 7pm.When you lose a million dollars in 1 second...Have known many to burn out young or die young. Our industry takes a certain amount of thick skin.. For myself I learned some things some years ago....I sweat very little in life anymore.
I do though wonder if I made the right decisions :)

High school teacher for 13 years now. Have worked at 3 different schools, been at the current one 10 years now.
Excellent pay/benefits, poor work environment, essentially zero chance of moving schools/provinces now with almost no teaching jobs available anywhere
Great if your passion is fishing, much less so if it is hunting.
