Why So Few Diesel Options?

So we just got back from Ireland where we rented a 2016 Hyundai Tucson DIESEL.

It was a fantastic trip (1800kms in 5 days, + 2 days sans wheels in Dublin) made exponentially more pleasant by that rental vehicle.

The mileage was phenomenal, and we only had to fill up twice. The low end torque was perfect for all the hills and acceleration out of all the twists and turns. And the high end HP was great for keeping up with the locals who view the 100 & 120kph speed limit signs as suggestions.

So, I get back to Canada and start looking into diesel SUVs thinking maybe I was just clueless and missed a selection of them.... But nope.... There's pretty much nothing aside from Mercedes.

Why is our market so gas-hungry!?

Because the price of gasoline has been way more expensive than here for decades. We will eventually get there when all the carbon taxes kick in.

GM (Canyon,Colorado) are starting to add 3L Diesel engines as options. Diesel engines,other than in full size pickups just haven't traditionally been big sellers in North America. Market demand drives option content.

Dodge and jeep have the Eco diesel but charge several thousand dollars for the upgrade. Last summer I was considering going for the diesel but changed my mind after calculating that the fuel savings by going diesel would require 200 000 km before I saved any money.

i have never kept a truck that long...

i do have a VW Jetta diesel commuter car , fuel mileage is good at 5.5L/100km but the same car with a gas engine almost gets the same fuel economy. Not sure going diesel was worth the premium sticker price but do enjoy 15000km oil change intervals when commuting 1000km per week.

What's the point of having an engine that gets 300000 miles in a body gets only 150 thou?

That's the problem. Many people never break even on the option upgrade $ when you calculate fuel costs. Quite a few Benzes and Audis are diesels now.

I just got a Ram diesel not quite 2 months ago, this last tank was getting 32.4 mpg, there's not too many gassers that can come close.

My buddy got one too and he gets amazing mileage. He did have an issue with the EGR though which is apparently a common problem on the Eco diesels. They get clogged but I guess some folks are doing an EGR delete to bypass this issue.

I guess the Nissan Titan now has a diesel and there is talk of an F150 diesel.

Are you quoting what the computer in the dash says you got or are you calculating the numbers yourself?

I know the computer in my car is a compulsive liar, but that may just be the brand (vw)

I can concur with the Eco Diesel. I picked one up and I average 9.0L per 100 K. For a pickup...thats awesome. Sometimes my results are better than 9.0L, but no too often.
Now that diesel is back to being cheaper than gas...I am convinced I made the correct choice.

Had a great Mazda diesel in Ireland last trip. Car was too big though for our little roads lol but spending 20 euros on fuel for the two weeks was nice

I agree, diesel cars are the norm there and we get electric, why?

The Tucson was pretty oversized as well... But I loved every minute of the driving. We covered nearly 2000kms and only 300km was on the hwys. The rest was all the tight n twisty country lanes where you're holding your breath around most corners. Lol

It was like a roller coaster you are controlling. With a high chance of colliding with another coaster on a blind corner or hill.

Depends on how much you drive. My last 3/4 ton had 644k on it when it was retired. That was in 8 years. Only regular maintenance other than the front end at about 450k. 25% of those kms were towing 12-13k.

Replaced it with a 1 ton 2015 Sierra that I have put 65k on in the last 8 months. Its a 9000lb truck and best calculated mileage so far is 29.6 mpg (9.5 L/100) on a run from Orangeville to Fort Frances. Towing 13k I get 16 mpg as long as I keep a light foot.

Interestingly the best highway mileage I ever got with the 3/4 ton was 25.5 mpg and towing the same trailer load I was getting 13mpg. Both the old and new truck had/have the 6.6 L Duramax diesel.

For most the premium does not make sense but in my case it pays off pretty fast (less than 3 years).

That mileage is crazy, we put 100K on my Matrix in 2 years and I thought that was intense. I would love one of these bad boys in Ontario.

Why so few diesels in North America? They have trouble meeting the emission standards here, which are more stringent than the European standards. In NA, vehicles must meet the same standards whether they use gasoline or diesel. In Europe, there are different (less stringent) standards for diesel powered vehicles than gasoline powered vehicles. Despite this, they still have difficulty meeting the emission standards there (read up on the current situation with VW and other related companies, both in EU and NA). I've traveled in Europe a bit, and the difference in air quality compared to North America is quite noticeable, at least compared to the areas of NA that I have been in.

Rf2 I was under the impression newer diesels have no problem meeting NA emissions requirements, that it was only really the early 2000s and older diesels that had problems.

At least Mazda has plans to introduce the CX5 With the skyactiv D engine in NA soon. Maybe that'll prime the market a bit.

My understanding is the diesels can meet NA standards but, they get way worse mileage because of all the emissions equipment.

The VW (et al) issue is with 2009-2015 model year vehicles. It's been in the news a lot lately.

Certainly diesels can be made to meet the standards, but to do so has consequences - as you mentioned, there is an impact on the mileage, performance, cost. All of these things are factored into the calculations made by the manufacturers when they determine which products to bring to which markets. I'm suggesting that the difference in the emissions standards in an important factor which determines why there are more diesels in the EU vs NA.

Never trust the computer, mine is always entered into my log book and calculated by hand. I refill at the same pump, when it clicks off I add 2 litres every time so it's pretty accurate.

Generally, larger vehicles are subject to less stringent standards (they are allowed to emit more pollution), but you seem to be talking about SUVs, so they would be subject to the same standards as other light duty cars and trucks. Manufacturers have some flexibility in which standard specific models are subject to - they can us a mechanism called fleet averaging which allows certain models to meet less stringent standards as long as some of their other models are subject to more stringent standards in an effort to "balance" the overall emissions of all of their models.

How do you account for idle time, warming up, sitting at lights, traffic etc because those are real world numbers.

You guys are giving this fuel economy thing way too much thought, who has the time to work all of that out. A tank last me a week and that's about as much as I care:) You need to get out hunting and fishing more LOL:)

Ive been told.by a deisel mechanic that the fuel in europe is far better than what we run. It helps with milage and emissions. Mostly additives that we van add ourselves here but no one wants to.shell out.for.

I drove a nice peugot 6 sp deisel all over ireland. Left some tyres behind on the ring of kerry. Did you get the wing mirror insurance.hahaha.
driving in dublin was hectic,
we went from belfast to everywhere and back to belfast on 2 tanks of fuel.

You'll use more fuel doing less kms. Simple as that. Divide the litres you've put in to fill the tank by the kms you've driven. Then multiply by 100 to get L/100km. I've actually started using the fuelly.com to keep track. My hand calculated mileage has typically been within 1 L/100km of the vehicles computer.

No but we fly in Tuesday to schipol then on to cork. 2 days there then on to Dublin then north to Belfast. It will be a busy week and I've already apologized to my liver

So you've never been to Doolin I assume? (Since it's just 20mins from Ailwee Cave/Corkscrew Rd)

Man, you HAVE to go... Doolin is a tiny nothing town, but it's renowned for being THE traditional folk music capital of Ireland. Live musicians every night in the pubs.
