I miss the old stickers you used to get in the mail and affix to the back of the outdoors card for you licenses and then a separate seal for the animal.
This should be interesting. A learning curve no doubt. Printing off your seals sounds like a win.
I'm not entirely sold on not having to attach a seal on an animal. Legalities asside, sealing an animal was like putting the cherry on top of the ice cream and was the final sign of accomplishment -especially for new hunters. Weird, I know, maybe I'm the only guy who feels this way.
It' s always fun to watch the shooter trying to notch out those tabs with a knife while he still on the Adrenalin high...LOL...
Mike, yes, there's a risk of butchered finger tips or a butchered tag - especially for the guy with the huge Bowie knife.
Deer Hunter, I agree, plus a tag through the nose spoiled the picture.
For us using nothing but a knife to notch the tag, here is a neat tip(developed after cutting myself more then once........)Take the whatever knife you have, with hands cold or not, place the tag on a nearby tree trunk, press the paper on the tree and cut the notch (where you need to notch the tag) like you are cutting V into the trunk with the tip of your knife..
No flimsiness,no paper collapsing,just a neat V.
Carry fingernail clippers. They work great to notch tags.....
He can photo copy it , it'll be illegal, but it's just for show anyway......try explaining that to the CO...LOL...
Print to PDF is the same as printing to a printer, you could also print it to script, there are lots of options.
The thing is, if someone is going to poach they are going to poach, having another tag that they printed will probably not make them poachers but it is possible.
i'm only speculating cause i don't know but who cares if you print off 1000 copies, the unique barcode or serial # with that tag will render the other 999 useless once it is reported. just my thoughts. i don't see how they can possibly stop multiple prints or copies.
This would work but it would have to be recorded. I would ask why they do not work with a tag termination system, you have to call in when you tag the animal or in the case where there is no cell phone coverage that the tag number be called in the night of the kill.
This would terminate that tag number, then if a CO were to stop someone with a tag that had that number but the date and time were different then they would know it was a tag copy and poaching.
This system has been in place in many states for many years.....I'm sure if it didn't work they would have stopped using it....nothing like beta testing with the rednecks in the deep south to find the loop holes for poachers :)
Clearly I have no idea what it is like to hunt in the bush.
There are situations where it would not work well but for 90% of situations hunters are easily within a quick drive to a phone if there is no home phone or cell phone.
Situations where I could see this being impractical would be mainly moose hunting in the far north, hunting from the Soo would not hurt that, hunting moose near Kapuskasing (where part of my family is from) is also no longer a problem, heck, the cell coverage runs 10 miles from the highway.
I can see it in most cases where the moose hunter would have no problem going for a rip after the moose is out of the bush to go call in to a toll free number about the animal harvested and probably brag a bit for their kill.
We had a mandatory check in system for wild turkeys for years followed by a phone in system that is currently in place, for the vast majority of the province this system would work very well and give some actual real time data as to the harvest numbers as nobody will claim they tagged an animal during the season when they have not, something that can happen with the current harvest survey at the end of the year.
I think there are poachers, then honest people and also a group of people who do what is legal simply because they fear they will get caught. This group is the group that may sway to poaching with the rule changes. How large that group is depends a lot on the area in the province and how they were brought up.
Were we hunt Moose we are 120 miles from a cell area, and I am not driving 120 there and 120 back to call.
Unless like last year it got to warm to hang the moose, and we had to drive it to Thunder Bay and have it butchered.
You hunt 120 miles from a phone? There are still public phones around in Ontario.
Like I said, for 90%+ of the big game harvests you should be able to call it in within an hour or two.
Many US states have mandatory check ins of the entire animal, why would it be a problem to call it in, pay phones do still exist and a toll free number reduces your need for change.
Pay phones? I haven't seen one of those anywhere in a very long time. Bell has had an elimination program since 2003. Just as an aside,my grandson (age 12) and I were north of Timmins fishing a couple of years ago when we pulled into a small "mom&pop" gas station. Outside was a phone booth with a disconnected and broken phone still in it. He looked at it and said "What's that thing,Grandpa?"
Pretty hard to call in a floatplane for a ride to a payphone within an hour or 2... lmao.
There was actually a big fight not that long (month?) about about a pay phone that Bell was trying to remove, it was in a rural community not far from Algonquin Park. They were fighting to keep the phone as cell coverage did not really exist in that area and this was a safety net for the community. They do still exist in Northern Ontario and in other places in Ontario. If the concern is a lack of call in stations then gas stations and hotels could be considered check stations for game, the same way as big buck contests and the old turkey check stations. The elimination program you are talking about from 2003 I can understand for the cell coverage areas of Southern Ontario but it was in 2007 that they increased the cost of cash local calls to 50 cents, so they were not planning to get rid of them or why bother going through the hassle of the increase to the CRTC.
I still see no problem with a call in for big game, this would invalidate the tag and get some proper harvest information, it would also help to keep the fence sitters honest.
Your grandson is 12? He probably has no clue what a turn table is either, or vinyl records, but they are still in production.
The forum has rules to keep it civil....'think' all you want...when you post it your in violation of the rules....

[QUOTE=Fox;1060918]It is the nature of the forum.
Hi there!
I am a member of this forum as many of us,and YES there are many opportunities on this very Forum to improve.
Making a summary comment as above(sharing Your opinion with the members about the Nature of the Forum being crap.........)while following all rules of the Forum, still does not fit right!
As much as that does not fit right,as much as constant lecturing other members and telling them things what they should do,what they do or know wrong ,should know or accept ...while keeping standing up for " strong rights"to share non compromise-able self opinion.
Members are all adults, they know many things in their own might...and while unprovoked challenging others(120 miles from a phone?...kid not knowing what is a pay phone ...other members opinion about hunting camp is all "negative" if it does not go along with the "ruling opinion" ....)may follow all rules of the forum ,still does not help .
Why starting then a thread about "personal ethics and hating on other hunters"...if the message comes across as : Do as I say-Not as I do?
Following common courtesy, not being in members faces many times when it i not called for, and" Doing as I say "goes a long way.
Now-i am not looking for a fight here, and i respect You as much as I respect any other member here, and yes,i do not know You at all,and i am not challenging Your experience, years of hunting, rights for opinion, and sharing it.........but if we want to keep this Forum viable, valuable and cultural, many things can help.
Especially respecting others in ALL possible ways.
Yep-we are all humans, and this is a faceless forum, but if we try,we can do it.
But - we ALL have to try!
Cheers
This seems a moot point, as I have not seen anything in the proposed changes that would indicate that big game harvest reporting will need to take place after the kill. I believe the changes will still rely on end of season reporting.
Having said that, reporting within an hour or two as you keep insisting, would be highly impractical and would be consequently plagued by non-compliance, even when in proximity to a phone. I'm only speaking from my experience.
Like was discussed in another thread earlier...a few of the the US states using this new tag/reporting system saySo I guess the definition of 'recovery' would have to be clarified....does it mean at the dock where the float plane lands and you unload the game ? ..then you should have access to communication by 5pm the next day..Quote:
5pm the day after the recovery
They're a lot of hunters, in states like Montana, that spend days 'recovering' their game on horseback...once they get it home, they have till 5pm the next day to report it...
Your only one day into the weekend Bushmoose you'd better pace yourself...LOL...
Back to it again on this subject and some still haven't understood the issues, unreal!!! Unpractical and a poacher gift at the least. It seems like the MNR is either stupid or only cares about the money. Probably both....
I still remember the brouhaha when the MNR contract went to a US firm (same one in fact)) and the "sky is falling" crowd was out in full force on here for months bemoaning how it was never going to work etc etc...
Turns out it worked pretty well, at least we don't hear of too many complaints..
Would it help if the guys would complain?
I for instance could not understand how the 0.5 square inch sticker (we used to have)on the Outdoors card could be replaced by a cheaper 10-12 square inch plastic -self adhesive ,carry on type paperwork. How that could be cheaper.....reasoning to move to this new (or old to be soon)system was cost saving, right?Yes,there is more to the cost then just a sticker.....but.
I may missed it ,but do not recall any public cost breakdown and cost justification for this move,so the reason for that move remains mystery for me(but i may missed something)Never mind why our $ go outside of the country?
At the other hand with low or non existing inflation in Canada why this new system will eliminate the cost increase as stated earlier? There should be none, considering the economy...at best matching the inflation, which is on 50 $ maybe 1 $ a year...of course non proportional fee hike raises questions in ppl's mind?
Government has right to do so,but then they could just say it as such, instead of trying to sell it as something beneficial?
It works in places, but we do not know the ins and outs, and especially we do not know how the impacted THERE feel about this "coming to us"system.
They use it-but they also have no other option.
Clearly ,many members feel not so hot about this change, and it is also clear we can do nothing about it.
Case could be closed.
There is an old saying-if ain't broken,do not fix it!
Just my 2 cents....
Based on the limited info in the link I originally provided, it isn't clear if reports are going to be required within a certain time frame after the kill (i.e. the current system for mandatory turkey harvest reporting) or whether it will be at season's end (i.e. the current system for mandatory controlled deer hunt reporting). It could very well be a combination of the two, where successful hunters report when they fill their tag, and everyone else reports after the season. At this point, it is a mystery to everyone, except the people making the rules.
• Anyone issued a Tag (moose, deer, elk, bear, turkey,
wolf/coyote for select WMUs) will have a mandatory
reporting requirement (whether they hunted or not).
• System will track reporting obligations, send reminders and provide
confirmation of submitted reports.
