Recently I spotted what I thought was a wild boar in the vicinity of Big Gull Lake and Hungry Lake in Central Frontenac Township. Although I had a good look, it was a short look as wild life don't always pose for you. Has any one else in that area of the Province spotted any wild boars?

We've seen something that look like "root pits" in several different locations around our stompin' grounds in Clarington and southern Peterborough County in the last couple of years that have lots of smaller cloven hoof prints in the them,but,we've never seen Hogs. The "root pits" look like someone took a cultivator to them,completely different than what a big buck would leave.....enough that we now actively watch for them. I won't hesitate to shoot 'em. Yeah I don't think we want boar up here, all the damage they cause. Most likely move the deer out as well. Let the Southerners keep their problem. I hear there is no way to keep them out of a field or anything else.

Well I dont think you have met most hunters, as in any group there are some rotten apples but in general I have found the complete opposite. Most hunters I have dealt with are very respectful of the farms and to the farmers that own them they hunt.Quote:

That is complete nonsense. There are many very wealthy farmers, mostly due them having very good business sense. Poor farmers are poor business managers. I personally know more more people who are millionaires, and multi millionaires that made their money farming, than I do of people who made their wealth via other means.Quote:

I started this thread simply to find out if anyone else has seen wild boars near Henderson On. in Central Frontenac Twsp. I suggested to the OFAH biologist that he might want to follow this thread to see if there have been other sightings. There has only been one comment regarding possible sign. Many argumentative comments that might better be on a different thread.
Hmmm ! a thread starts out about wild or feral pigs, then turns into a discussion about how poor farmers are, some guys should just learn to stay off this forum if they cannot keep the discussion on line with the original subject!
That would do the trick,alright. My BIL hunts in Pennsylvania with his neighbors. They go every second year to a friend's farm east of Pittsburgh. He tells me when they're running,they're hard to knock down because the hides are really tough and some of the Boars they've taken weigh over 200Lbs. Generally,anything that will knock down a big buck is what they use for Wild Boar.Quote:

We thought we had some last year pass through Coe Hill Area. The carrots we put out were gone and so was the dirt underneath. I know any ungulate could have done this as well but we also had a couple of weird photos on trail cam that could have been hog. Not %100. Check the out for sightings

Yes and no. Dairy Farmers if they manage there income properly and their equipment can be quite wealthy as they have a good idea as to what there check will be each month. Beef farmers no not really rich most do it for a small second income at least in Ontario. Crop farmers depends they have their ups and downs.

If we compare photos of escaped hogs and wild boars,it's easy to see the difference in their build. I haven't been on a hunt with my BIL,yet,so,I can't definitively claim to know first hand. He and his buds tell me that wild boars have a very tough hide with very heavy guard hair covering the "boiler room" that takes a lot to punch through. He also said that when they're standing,to nail them in the ear and they drop straight down without so much as a twitch. Like Venison and Moose meat,they're the best when taken while standing still. For states with a wild hog problem, this picture is indicative of just how bad that problem is. While feral pigs are more known for their destructive sprees when it comes to agriculture or the environment, it should be noted that hogs will also compete and even prey on native species. In fact, there are very few things that the swine will not eat. This picture, which was shared by LouisianaBowhunter.com on their Facebook page, shows a large hog carrying a dead whitetail fawn. The picture is believed to have been taken in Louisiana, which currently has wild pig population of well over half a million.
Just how badly are pigs impacting the deer population? Consider the fact that for the past few years, hunters in Louisiana have taken more hogs than they did deer. In 2015, sportsmen and women harvested 300,000 feral pigs, but only 139,000 deer.
“Hogs continue to be a primary concern,” stated the LDWF in its annual deer report in 2014. “Research shows that deer and hogs do not mix and that deer can be displaced by hogs. Research has shown that deer detection rates can be up to 49% less where hogs occur. Hog populations affect deer numbers through direct competition for food resources and fawn predation. Hogs carry infectious diseases such as Leptospirosis, brucellosis, and pseudo-rabies.”
The impact that hogs have in deer are not only noticeable, but very significant. When the pigs are not actively preying on deer, they compete with them for food and space while at the same time, they also degrade their habitat. All around, hogs are having a greater impact on deer than experts previously expected. Unlike deer, hogs are highly adaptable and can also breed very quickly. If you ever wondered just how feral pigs have managed to become such a nuisance, keep in mind that a single sow can produce an average of 12 piglets every year. At this rate, biologists propose that 75 percent of the total swine population must be harvested every year to maintain a stable number of pigs.
That is a lot of bacon.
Thankfully, a lot of states encourage hunters to harvest wild pigs and have very lax to almost no regulations when it comes to hog hunting. Some states, such as Louisiana, are relaxing their regulations even more as the hog population increases.

2013 was the last known case of Tricinellosis and it was not from a commercial farm, raising pigs in a barn and not feeding them meat but rather grain has reduced the incident to almost nothing in domestic pork, black bear does get it and most of the cases in NA are from black bears.Quote:

Until people see the damage up close and personal,they really have no concept what a sounder of hogs can do to a field of crops. They have the disposition of junk yard dogs and are a particularly nasty species for horse riders,hikers and dog walkers to meet while enjoying their nature activities. My BIL says that they're worse than Bears. There's no such thing as warning growls and false charges with those things. Once they start coming at you,you need to shoot fast and don't miss.Quote:

A couple of guys that I worked with in GE lived on 'hobby' farms in Texas (800 Acres & 600 Acres) and the hogs are out of control down there.
They are very destructive and extremely hard to eradicate - a fishermans version of Asian Carp.

And, that's how they keep them under control in Europe and they are not over running the country side.
Plus they are disease prone. Around the camp here and State wide there has been adviseries to hunters and taxidermist about cautions when handling carcass.. a double edged sword, the State wants them gone / hunted but is obliged to warn the public.

I'm not a big fan of shooting running targets with a rifle however at the risk of being criticised I will say that shooting those running boars didn't seem to present the same challenges of white tail deer.
They are lower to the ground and certainly don't have the vertical leaps deer do nor speed.
Regardless, looked like a lot fun.

I shot one in western Quebec a few years ago at the in-law's farm with a SKS. They are very tough animals.
Your more likely to find sign of pigs then see them. Mud rubbed on tree trunks, mud holes that look like they could have been dug by a quad but the surrounding brush us void of quad tracks, dug up ground, etc.
Wasnt there a deer gang on here last year that shot a pig near Magnetawan? I havnt seen any pigs in wmu49 near sprucedale but I have heard of someone seeing some near Elmsdale
