When one segment of society is granted special rights over the other segment of society,this will always be the net result. Canada has been vilified the world over for our FN policies,including at the UN. Until we apply "tough love" and repeal The Indian Act,cut off all funding to the First Nations and FORCE integration into main stream Canadian society,nothing will ever change.

At one time most native tribes fought other tribes over land, hunting rights or just perceived slights. How far back do you go to figure out who is deserving of land rights or financial compensation and who is responsible to make these decisions?
Maybe we just set an arbitrary time and date, say June 23rd 1725 and whoever owned or occupied any and all lands in the world gets to own/occupy/govern that country or parcel.
There is no easy answer everyone will ever agree with. People, even with the same interests and background are always going to disagree, that is human nature.

Without accusing anyone here of anything in particular, those that have an opinion on how to best handle our relationship with the First Nations groups within Canada, have you actually read any of the treaties? Or, for that matter, any legitimate writings regarding the treaties?
Every time these conflicts arise there is an unlimited supply of opinions on what we should do, or what the various groups must want however I find sometimes find historical context and understanding missing from the discussions. I think, just maybe, that if all the sides involved in this current lobster dispute came into the situation with the intention to calmly sort things out we might actually get somewhere, and just MAYBE even set some sort of example of how to resolve these situations in the future. Because frankly, this is just the start of things.
For anyone interested, I recommend reading "On being here to stay" by Michael Asch. Its one of the few books i've come across regarding the treaties that provides a clear historical context (from BOTH sides of the treaties) and maybe gives us the best idea of what the treaties were really agreeing to without any obvious underlying dog in the fight.
Again, not accusing or implying anything regarding all the fine folks here. Just want to make sure we are coming into this with a little bit of reason. I think the state of things these days is a pretty solid example of where we get by only bringing emotions and baseless opinions to the conversation.
In reviewing comments on Michael Asch's book I saw it quoted " Asch proposes a way forward based on respecting the “spirit and intent” of treaties negotiated at the time of Confederation," I think that should open up the discussion for both parties in those agreements. Was the "intent" of the treaties to have First Nations sucking at the the teat of Government to the tune of $Billions annually in perpetuity ?? Is holding today's Government financially responsible for the reconciliation of wrongs purported 100's of years ago the result of true wrongs or just greed ? Also could be serious since the Mohawks from Quebec/Ontario are down there with rifles. If there is bloodshed it will be the FN and Government who caused it.
A treaty is a contract, signed by both the Bands and the Canadian government. One side cannot break a contract just because they want to. Try that with any other lawful agreement. They were given those contracts in exchange for land. Simple really, if we don't want to uphold the treaty, then give them back the land. Can't have it both ways. The way it stands now ,if the government won't give them the land, then we will pay them billions a year till we do. If the Bands would rather have the land than the money, what can you do , they have a legally binding contract.
There is a difference between feeding your family and selling at least to the best of my knowledge, but then what do I know I'm not a union boy.

My parents are from Yarmouth and many from my family still live in NS and half are involved in fishing, so I hear things pretty quickly and probably faster then the news does.

"The (non-Indigenous) commercial fishery has systematically boxed us out of the market," Sack said in a statement. "It will take time to rebuild our relationships in the supply chain of people and companies we did business with who are now rightly afraid of retaliation."
Amid the rising tension, the First Nation says it can't sell lobster caught by those taking part in its moderate livelihood fishery in St. Marys Bay or the band's commercial operation in the Bay of Fundy.
"It's like we've been blacklisted, and we're just hopeful that we can quickly come to some resolution and expedite getting our lobster to market," Sack said.
"Pulling our commercial fishery this week and for the upcoming seasons will financially devastate our community,"
That does not settle this. I did a bit of reading and it seems to me the Chief and the band are cherry picking what part of the treaty they wish to honour.
Like I said there is a simple solution the FN just needs to fishing during the season if they fish at any other time they have no right what so ever to say they are the environmental stewards.
If they follow the rules none of this would be happening, they also should be happy that Taxpayers paid for their boats as most Lobster Fishers have to take out a 1.5 million dollar loan for a boat.
