Ok, time to fess up and put away the halo's. Who amongst us law abiding darlings and angels, un-case's and loads their rifle prior to legal shooting time half hour before sunrise? I'll go first. My rifle is loaded about a minute or two after I get into my blind, which is generally always well before the half hour prior to legal time.
Please re-think this type of thread.
Crossbow encased till legal time. Gun incased till legal time. If I ever catch one of my guys loaded before legal they’ll be in the road
You know enforcement patrols these forums, right?
Anyways, my gun id cased and unloaded until legal and is unloaded and cased by the second legal ends
I adhere to the law. LOL, as hard as I try, I never get to my spot until after legal shooting hours starts anyway. What can I say? I’m slow. I also don’t want to shoot anything at the end of the day either. Tracking and gutting a deer in the dark is not a lot of fun.
Deer hunting i walk into my spot at daylight so gun is loaded
Everything else I hunt its in case on the walk in the dark, Then gun case doubles as a seat/backrest during the day

I check "official" sunrise and sunset times every day before I go out because it's the legal standard used to establish the time of an offense,never leaving anything to chance. I dumped a Coyote at legal time last week with one eye on my watch and the other on the case latch.
Nope unloaded and cased I load at the sunrise moment.
Admitting you routinely commit a hunting offence on an open forum will not end well for you!
In my deer spot I am checked often by Mr C.O and I don't care because I have nothing to hide... :)

If some CO wants to track me 2k back into the bush , find my stand in the dark and check and see if I have chambered a round at 06:15 instead on 06:17...then the MNR has a huge problem with their application of enforcement.

I have it from the horses mouth, at least in this area, a CO will not go into the bush to look for hunters breaking rules, especially in the dark. It's a safety issue.
So what goes on in the tree stand at 06:15 am is between you and your conscience, because no one is ever going to find out what you do back there.

I stick to the times as well. We were checked almost two hours before legal light up moose hunting in the NW...we had driven close to a block we were going to hunt, had a snooze, then waited for legal time. All guns were properly encased.
So, it can happen. Not worth the risk!

What "official" time are you using or referring to? I don't believe there is an "official" time per se? It will always be the precise moment based on your location. The GPS will calculate that instantly or, if you have a copy of a Nautical Almanac and a sextant, you might be able to figure it out? lolQuote:

There have been a few examples given from the real world where COs were out in the dark, far from main roads checking people for this. To say it won't happen has been shown to be inaccurate.
Now, whether someone wants to admit to this on an open forum is their choice. Personally, I think this conversation is better had around a campfire with close, trusted friends.
If it’s uncased loaded means he’s willing to shoot it before or after legal. Period

no, you are NOT breaking the law. If your equipment is encased, then you are not “hunting” according to the definition given for hunting. You are walking to a location of your choice in the dark, but you are not yet hunting. Once your equipment is uncased then and only then do you meet the legal definition of hunting.

Anyone who hunts with a crossbow knows it's not nearly as easy to "unload and case" a crossbow as it is a rifle. Especially one with anti-dry fire. Personally, I have to shoot a decocking arrow from my treestand and then fumble with a bag that catches onto EVERYTHING in the dark and never wants to go on right. If I can do that I think that you can work your action a few times to unload then slip a sock on. Might take you a minute or two. Not to say that there weren't times I might've unintentionally had it cocked or not bagged because I can't put some half-time buzzer over my head. Personally, if you aren't planning on shooting something before/after legal time then I do not care. I hunt archery for black bear, and I'm just going to say it'd be nice to have a loaded 12 gauge walking next to fresh bait in the dark where literal monsters roam.

Well that was entertaining. I for one am not quite the angel some of you are, but have never shot at an animal outside of legal shooting times. I suppose if I was caught climbing out of my stand when my crossbow or rifle was still hanging on the string before I got to it to put it in the case/sock I could be charged. I'll take my chances though and continue to hunt until the last minute.

MNR definition of hunting:

As per the definition, you don't even need to have a gun (encased or not) to be hunting....the word is 'or' not 'and'.
As was stated earlier, it's a good example of the problems with the definitions that the MNR uses when it's a summary of the FWCA.
You have to read the entire definition of hunting in the Definitions section of the FWCA...not the summary.Quote:

I cant see in any world where this constitutes an illegal act otherwise every single person coming out of the woods after legal shooting is breaking the law. Anyone dragging a deer out in the dark after they shot it could get a ticket for "hunting" even if their weapon is encased?

Ive had the MNR sit and wait for me to come out long after shooting hours were up and they didnt say squat about why I came out of the woods after legal shooting time because they use common sense and obviously know the law. Carrying a deer and an encased gun they had nothing to say they just stopped to check us. Pretty sure if we did anything illegal they would have spoke up and pulled out the ticket book?

I think the point of this whole thread was to point out that there a whole lot of ethics warriors on forums but in practice a lot of dudes do things a bit differently in the field. I’ve seen it enough times to believe that is correct. And very few of them have nefarious intent, they just get where they are going and proceed to get ready for daylight. Funny story..........I am fortunate to have 5-6 farms that I can hunt on and took a guy on a turkey hunt about 4 years back (met him on this site actually). We met at Timmies and transferred his stuff to my truck for the drive to the farm. We park in the laneway and from my truck we have about a 800m walk to the edge of the bush down a farmers laneway and the ground blind is only about 40yds into the bush close to where the birds are roosted (about 100-125yds away). We get out and put our vests on and gear up when this guy comes around the corner of the truck and says I'm all ready. I look down and ask him what is with that - pointing to his Plano hard gun case with a pad lock on the handle that he was holding. I said get a gun sock........legal and quiet. He smiles and says you can never be too safe. I convince him to take the pad lock off the handle at least and we start the walk out.
About 1/2 way to the blind we stop at three large oak trees and I pull off my gun sock and hang it on a branch, load up and put the safety on (it's legal shoot time.....I'm locked and loaded). I tell him I will pick my sock up on the way out. I look at him and almost beg him to ditch the huge Plano hard case and he says no, he will wait until he gets to the blind - you can never be too safe. We continue the move to the tree line then sneak into the blind and sit down nice and quiet - the chairs were there waiting for us and it was an amazing morning.
Then the show started. Bang.....the case hit a log......thump on the chair and then the two *snaps* of the case release - I leaned over and said quiet the birds are only 80-100 yds away. He pulls out the gun and the case slides off his lap hitting the ground with a thump - he gets a dirty look form me. Finally he settles down and then he whispers to me we have a problem, I left the keys to the trigger lock back in your truck. I roll my eyes and took his gun our of his hands and handed him mine and said put he crosshairs on his head and pull the trigger.
Needless to say we never got that far.........we watched the birds pitch down and walk away (not surprised). We had a very good talk on the walk out about what is legal and why. I explained to him that yes........ you can be too safe when hunting (especially turkey when being stealth is key).
Yeah I did that once showed up to my tree stand and realized I forgot the keys. I use a sock or soft case now without the lock.

Before hunting, check local sunrise-sunset times. You may only hunt from half an hour before sunrise to half an hour after sunset (exceptions: night raccoon hunting and spring hunting hours for wild turkey). If you are in an area usually inhabited by wildlife during the period from half an hour after sunset to half an hour before sunrise you must unload and encase any firearms in your possession. To be considered encased, firearms must be enclosed on all six sides.
So obviously there is no issue with being on stand before legal shooting as you are not hunting.
