Garmin makes a PRO series (PRO550, PRO70, SportPRO) and a Delta series. Dogtra also manufacturers a range of collars depending upon the features and $$$ you are looking for and want to spend.
Great response Dakota Creek..... that first line is exactly what I was thinking when I read the title of this thread. I've used Dogtra for a few years now and I'm happy with the e-collar. Knowledge of the e-collar and a cool head is of the utmost importance.

Assuming a heavier Shepherd coat, be sure that the contact points on the collar receiver can be changed out to a longer set should you need to. Some collars only have permanently mounted short contact points.

Don't discount the Delta series. Currently working with the Garmin Delta XC.
Main thing to consider would be your working distance and select the unit for that range.
What I like about the XC is the small compact sending unit that makes for convenient and easy carry.

I use a Dogtra but Garmin is a quality product too. My question about breed was to determine at what distance your dog works. The lower end models don't have as much range but not everybody needs it either. Stick to those 2 brands and they will serve you well. Make sure you get one with longer prongs as already said above. Your dog has a fair bit of a thick coat. Take the time to learn how to use them properly too. Great tools. When I fire mine up the jingle sound drives the dogs berserk and jump for joy so they sure don't mind wearing them.
I’m suspicious of people who don't like dogs, but I trust a dog who doesn't like a person.

The contact points in the Delta series are permanently mounted into the collar, so you are not able to change to longer contact points that this dog will most likely need due to the thickness of it's neck ruff.

The original collars on the market only had one setting and it was hot. Today, training methods have changed and collars have developed to the point where if you understand how to use the collar, properly low level stimulation is used
I didn't realize it was such a touchy subject up north. I see the s-word used all the time in hunting communities and dog training/sports (IPO, tracking, ring sports). I think the devices are officially called "training" collars, as you point out, but everyone knows what that means. I see a little bit of grief from the pure positive training community about such training tools, but almost everyone in the working dog community seems to understand that such tools have a place and time.

You bring up a good point too; start with the lowest level of stimulation possible and work your way up as needed. I've used a training collar to good effect in training my own dog for his recall and to break him off certain game. I view it not as a punishment, but rather as a correction or wake-up call when he ignores my commands....otherwise he gets tunnel vision (and hearing) on whatever he is chasing and no amount of verbal commands or hand signals will get his attention.

A private member's bill to criminalize the use of e-collars was introduced under the previous government, but I don't believe it made it to second reading.

E-collars are probably the most overused and most misused piece of training equipment going and their incorrect use just lends support to the anti-collar side. Anyone planning to get his (or her) first collar ought to look carefully at how they're used in the retriever world (the state of the art) and in particular understand the concept of indirect pressure.

I'm not sure why there would be any need for an e-collar in training a family pet, personally....

OP. Please change the title of the thread, or re-submit it. This is a public and open forum. The term itself is enough to create issues.

I think Canadian's have been exposed to 'Political Correctness' so long it has crept down into the normal lexicon..'static stimulation' is more palatable to their sensibilities than the word 'shock'...like you said, everyone knows it's the same thing. )

Nope the XC comes with both short and long prongs and easily convertible. Currently have the long prongs on for the setter.
