You still are required to renew your vehicle registration. As far as plate readers, most smaller police services do not have readers due to the costs. Those costs are going to be offset by the government, to allow more services to get readers. Your insurance particulars DL status etc are linked into the same system as your ownership information. Police need only query the plate to get vehicle and owner info. They will still have to stop and check the actual driver to check licence
status. A check that comes back as “insured” is not necessarily the case. People have a habit of not paying their insurance premiums…

FYI, the police have long had plate reader tech in their vehicles that automatically will alert if a scanned plate A: Is valid B: Has a driver without suspension.

No RFID needed, as distance and proximity for RFID to work is quite close.

Not sure if maintaining your vehicle should be a problem for some.....personally I don't drive a POS that has dash lights on all the time...

I also heard the rumor about annual inspections. I haven't really looked into it, or seen any proof.

As far as I know, there are provinces where this is a requirement for years already. If you properly maintain a vehicle, it isn't hard to pass an annual safety. I could certainly see an opportunity for fraud if that system were Implemented.

I am pretty sure it cost more than what we pay for them to produce the sticker and have someone at the private facilities send it out to us or sit there at a desk and hand it over to us.

This system has been removed from a lot of other jurisdictions a long time ago, you still have to register your car and update the information, just not bother with paying as it can all be done in a database online.

If the government can produce evidence that there is a serious problem that warrants inspections then I might buy into the program. Otherwise, they can pound sand!

Maybe there is hope, sure could use that money, didn't want to use my pocket cash to pay for some new truck parts and would hate to tell the wife she has to go down to Ottawa Byward Market and beg for money she might disagree with me.
