I saw 6 shops in Kemptville with 'Help Wanted ' signs and heard from the other merchants (CT and BMR) they are short-staffed.
Didn't think much of it but saw a News article on CTV...'Help Wanted' signs are everywhere, lots of jobs and no applicants.
I guess till the Liberals stop their experiment with Pandemic UBI, the flow of CERB money, there will be no interest in getting off Mom and Dad's couch and getting a job.
You are aware that the individual CERB benefit ended in October of 2020.

I am just finishing up a contract on Wednesday and starting a new permanent job as a System Analyst. But really all I am doing is working so that I can retire in 3 - 5 years. Actually if the government gave me 2000.00 bucks a month for life I could actually quit my job. I would take my savings and pay off the house and with 2 grand a month I would only need to work 1 - 2 weeks a month doing cash. I could retire sooner.

One chap I know has a sister in her mid 30's 7 kids by 5 different men for those 7 kids all said and in she receives just over $5000 a month plus whatever the government is paying her live in boy friend I would say that is is pretty good pay day for doing nothing all her life other than having a little fun. How many others are there out there like that a lot I'm sure. I imagine for a lot why work when they can get knocked up and paid for it.

Some things have changed this year. I think coverage is cut to 300/wk in July. Maybe start by realizing some jobs are not careers. If you increase minimum wage everything goes up including everyone elses salary. Last time we increased minimum wage everything went up the same amount.
A better solution is to get an education.
By the way it was in the CBC that people are turning down jobs paying upwards of 25 bucks an hour. So if you increase mininum wage to that then people like me are going to demand the same increase. So your still back at square one.

I go back and forth between high paying and low paying my go to job is the Lawn care company I worked for 25 years ago and in between jobs I go there. I make in a week what was my spending money. My new Job isn't paying as much as I had been making for the past 2 years actually it's about a 25K pay cut but I am still going to go to work.
99% of those complaining don't really want to work and we can see the proof now as you have indicated even good paying jobs making 20+ and hour and people still want the free money.
If I was employer when that money runs out and someone applied to work because it ran out I would throw their application in the garbage.
Jobs are a dime a dozen and very easy to find compared to the 1980's

I agree with you GW that flipping burgers shouldn't be a career. I flipped burgers, I changed oil, I delivered lumber, I was not paid enough to afford a vehicle and gas so I got 2 jobs, then I got better jobs. That's the point, learn good habits at these starting positions and move on to bigger and better.
All the places I worked have never expected you to be the Best of the Best they want someone who will be a team player and who will do their best and have what it takes to succeed and you have shown that.
Believe it or not I actually like working at the Lawn care company more then computers, actually I hate computers. Doing Lawn care I don't really have to think much and working in IT I am always thinking and cannot shut it out of my head.
In 3 - 4 years I should be at the point where I don't have to care or worry as much if I have a high paying job. Not going back to Lawn care as that is Summer work, probably go drive a school bus and enjoy my Summers and I can shut off my brain.

Back to the topic of people not applying to low paying jobs, I considered taking on a second job back then (10 years ago) at 1/2 the wage just to get ahead. We live in a country where money is here for the taking, all you have to do is get out of bed and find it.
Sadly some choose to abuse the government safety net making many middle class earners bitter about how the tax dollars are spent. But it's there for a reason, if I were to be critically injured or ill, I expect to receive the benefits I've contributed to.

It's a good life overall being finally retired, unless I need to visit Princess Auto or maybe Cabelas next door I have no need to go into Ottawa at all anymore.
Off topic a tad next time I do that tour I will definitely include a trip to the Golden Place for their world famous egg rolls. Last dozen I bought were $24, my daughter brought a dozen over a few months back and now they're $30 a dozen. Still the best and cheap compared to what they charge at the Sens games, they've lost a huge revenue source with these public freedom restrictions and the arena closed.

Ok, will you start a company and pay your employees that rate of pay? DO you have a company and pay that rate of pay. You wont because running a company requires cash flow and a bank balance to stay viable. Unless you are trades based company 90% of all companies operate on a profit loss model, and wages by far are the highest expense of any company. Wages include WSIB and CPP. How do you pay high wages and continue to compete with other companies in the same field, and win jobs. See that is the issue, you build a business model based on wage/labour costs and operate a profit/loss company. The forced mandate of $15 hr caused more layoff then jobs, accelerated automation (self checkout) implementation in large corporation who have deep pockets to afford costs up front. Ask anyone who got the $15 raise, how much buying power do they have now with extra income, as inflation and commodities went up to recover the cost of labour.
See this is false narrative used by left to get votes, $15 per hour, why $15 why not $100 per hour...because we all know it will cause the cost of everything else to rise to pay for it - effectively negating and wage labour gains by workers.
If you both make $15 per hour and are married and decide to have kids, that's your problem and responsibility to provide based on your abilities. No one else is responsible for your choices and no one else owes you any duty to provide your needs. Furthermore, those complaining about $15 need to take a look at own budget, bet they have a nice phone, car payment, credit debt and therefore are poor (in debt). By your own account a couple making $15 actually make $30 and fit within your $24 rate..but that is not the kids of today responsible (for the most part, not all), they refuse to go without shiny objects and demand help for the bad choices they made...like student debt.
Lastly start your own evil corporation/small business and pay your people $24 per...and see how that goes, in the competitive market.

Unless you are being given a down payment by your parents there are not really many sacrifices that can get you in to a home.
Even if you cut that rent down to $1000 a month, which is next to impossible to find, you are still looking at 3.5 years before you can afford a house in 2021 but it will be 2024.
I can confirm CERB payments continued ... just under a new name. My wife has been forced to stop work due to COVID, and fortunately she can still collect this. Also, more fortunately, they were allowed to open again, so she is back at work ... the "CERB" payment is helpful, but doesn't cover her salary.Quote:

Well I run my own company, and it’s gig based. When I need assistance, people are paid based on the service that they bring. Basic unskilled labour $18.75 per hour. Skilled labour goes as high as $56.25 an hour. And my company seems to be doing just fine. So as much as I appreciate the lectures I receive here, the majority of it comes off BS. Yes it takes sacrifice to get to where you want and it’s up to the individual to choose what kind of life style they want. But scanning through the thread, all I see is Right wing gaslighting. Generally school shows you are capable of being trained to do something. In today's changing world you need to be flexible.
I graduated from Sir Sandford Flemming in Lindsay Ontario in 1993 and then studied Pest control in 1994 after working Seasonal in Ottawa for Chemlawn (A lawn care company now Tru Green), I decided to go back to school again and study computer Programming, since that time I have taken Oracle courses, Sharepoint courses etc. Life and work is a continuous learning process.

Programming in general is a tough but lucrative job. Much has changed since I started in 2000, I still really only program in Visual Studio and do SQL Server and Oracle.
Most programming jobs now require you to know all kinds of other stuff that I have never bothered with so I am still really old school. These days you need to know all kinds of languages luckily I am on my way out and if I can squeeze in 3 - 5 more good years I won't have to worry much anymore. I will still need to work some maybe drive a school bus and do some cash jobs here in there.
But you have to do what ever you can. When I was laid off of my last permanent position in 2015 I spent the winter working Dairy (I was already working there on weekend for extra coin). That Spring I found a small contract for 6 months then that was finished and I went to cut firewood for a fella for 16.00 / hr cash working 6 days a week in Jan. The in Spring back to Lawn care for the Summer and then I finally started getting more contracts. Just finished a government contract which was boring but very lucrative and going to start a new job as a System Analyst a permanent position and lucky me my boss will be a friend of mine who got me into computers 21 years ago right about the same time.
One key thing is you must be willing to do anything I got this job because my buddy trusts I will work to the best of my abilities and when required I will work overtime (time off in lieu)
I did ask he he could fire me in 4 years so I could get a severance package, but he said he was quitting in 3 years. :)
These days you need all the skills you can learn If there is money involved I'm usually there. I did think about going back and cutting wood on weekends again but getting tired these days.

If they just retired then 2-3 millenials with up to date knowledge would be able to be hired, but you cannot tell someone to retire anymore, that is illegal.

My Best friend I grew up with helps on car repairs if the job is big and also repairs any electronics if they broke. Since he loves machining (I helped build his shop) he will also do welding for me.
Some friends on here also keep an eye out for things at times that I am looking for and sometimes have given my son or me some gear they didn't need. I have also given away some gear that I don't need.

My parents gave me the ultimatum when I was 18 and finished high-school .
Either find a full time job or go to college. If not, You can't live here. Plus I had to work on the farm at nights and weekends as room and board fee.
I'm glad they did because a lot of my friends just partied and had part time jobs. I started a trade and within a year started my apprenticeship. A lot of them same friends are still working low paying part time/seasonal jobs. It will be 15 years in the trade now this year and I still thank my parents to this day.

Have to admit you're right, the Boomers/GenXs allowed their kids to stagnant at home after schooling was done. They allowed them to stay at home unconditionally. Worse they encouraged them do nothing by dropping a $20 on the table for Junior' to buy his lunch as they headed out for their careers.Quote:

Pretty much every kid I grew up left home when they were 19 or earlier. I left home at age 18.
My two oldest moved out long ago. My youngest intends to go to College in Ottawa so will probably stay a bit longer.

In my generation, the desire to leave the nest was strong and not many kids stayed in their parent's homes after graduation...it was rarely the case and now it's the norm.
Where there's a will there is way. My youngest son bought a 5 bedroom house in a university town where he is enrolled in Electrical engineering. He was 19 at the time and is now 21. He rents out 4 of the rooms and uses one for himself. Put a bachelor's apartment in the basement after he bought it and rents it on Airbnb. Apartment is always rented especially with COVID it has been in high demand for 14 day quarantines.
He did all of it himself - not a penny from me. Only help I provided was to guarantee the mortgage with the lender.
While in school full time he works part time for an automation company building custom electrical panels. He makes over 5k/month off the rooms and airbnb add in his wages and he is doing fine. No car either. Rides his bike everywhere.
Rental income pays for the house, taxes and utilities. Panel building pays tuition and other living expenses.
You've obviously done a great job as a parent. That's the end goal when mine are that age. Tip of the hat to ya Pal....Quote:
