Heading up to a friends in north Pickering and thought I'd give Duffins a whirl next week. Never actually targeted river salmon before. I was thinking of micro tubes on micro jigs. Any other other suggestions? Spinners? Spoons? Flies? Blade baits? Pinkies? Spinners? Only ever targeted river steelhead...
All those sound good, give roe bags a try too I usually get some on them
I've had luck with #3 or #4 Mepps Aglia.
Do you guys think it's to late to keep any of the salmon? Will they be going white already?
If they're not chrome don't take em home is what I say, but if they're still fresh they should be ok
A good starting point for bait is the fact that they don't eat in rivers....

Truth is that the vast majority of river-caught salmon are snagged/lined/flossed, intentionally or otherwise. Once they're in the river for a few days, and have been spooked out of their minds by guys trying to three-prong them multiple times, they clam up.
When they're fresh, small spinners and Flatfish will work. The trick is to get away from people and just be patient. Fish deep pools and remember, if you can see the fish, they can see you too so it's generally game over.
Thx for the tips. I've seen some YouTube videos and seems similar to steelhead.
A good one I heard was use a giant treble and braid and try and hook them in the back, that will be my go pattern at first!

I'll bring a drift rod and casting stick, fish should be very fresh now and an Atlantic would be a bonus!

From my experience in the Credit and Bronte the salmon are hitting out of frustration or curiosity , not hunger, can count on one hand how many times a fish in the fall took a "bait" and went for the swallow, most were brief pick ups or thumps from having something fluttering in front of them, have found spinners dropping back into pools work if they have no idea your there. Any vibration in the ground or noise they can pick up on, it over.

Not ALL the river salmon are flossed, another thing I've heard of guys trying on Duffin's Creek is bopping the salmon on the snout with a fly, salmon gets ticked off and snaps at it. Haven't seen this move with my own eyes.Quote:

I won't even fish salmon in the Lake O tribs anymore. It's a filthy, ugly, messy, stinky belly-slitting mess. The samples are not taken from the whole fish .. they are only taken from just below the dorsal fin to about 1 inch of either side of it . they only sample about 2 square inches of meat and it is the best part it contains no lateral line .. i hope you are not feeding your wife and children any of those fish

not all salmon are flossed, most are though, i thought a king would never hit anything in a river, well this past weekend, i was fishing from around 4 am until dark, hooked into a bunch of fresh chrome kings using spinners, most i lost due to line rips and tangles or they got broken. When it came down to me having a couple lures left, i put on a williams ice fishing lure, was casting into a pool around a metre and a half deep, clear water, 15 pound mono, i could see easily 20 fish in the pool, most were a yellowish colour but i could see a few chromers in there as well. I had a hit and my reel started screaming, i look and out comes a chrome hen head shaking with believe it or not, the lure in its mouth! I clearly saw the strike, it turned around and grabbed the lure much like a pike or bass. First time I've seen this but they do hit, especially the fresh ones who haven't adapted to the creek yet. Cohos, no one should have any.

In the case of oily fish like salmon in Lake Ontario, the highest concentration of contaminants would be in the fat adjacent to the skin.
I don't take the consumption advisories literally since the numbers are a bit arbitrary, but they're a good indication of relative contamination levels between fish and locations. If you're eating salmon from Lake Ontario I hope you're at least removing the skin and as much of the fat layer as possible, and grilling the fillets to let more fat drip away.

I won't deny that the fish in Lake Ontario are contaminated, you can't flush all your crap (literally) into the lake and not think the fish are going to absorb it when they are swimming, breathing and eating in it. That said, there's probably few places on this planet now where the fish aren't contaminated in some way shape or form. Does anyone actually know where the fish in the market were caught from? I'm willing to bet many were from waters that are more polluted than Lake Ontario, but that economic machine needs to keep on turning so off to market they go. I'm also willing to bet that many fish are consumed from lakes around the Sudbury area without a second though because those are clean pristine northern lakes right? Well according to the eating guide, some of those lakes are even worse than what lake O has to offer, as a result of the crud spewing from the smelters at the mines. In the end, if you were to listen to every experts opinion on all the different foods, from water to red meat and all points in between, it would only be safe to not eat or drink, see how long you can live on that diet.
Isn't wheat bad for you now? I think it was eggs a few weeks ago. Tap water is poisonous now because it has fluorine in it (which has been in it forever, but it's bad now). Wine was good 2 months ago, but then was bad, but now it might be good or still bad?!?! I hope by now you get the point. Eat what makes you happy, be it tofu or a deep fried mars bar.
We shouldn't be drinking coke, eating McDonalds or Potato Chips. We should not eat chocolate bars or fruit loops. We should not eat cold cut meats.
There's lots of stuff out there killing us - full of untested chemicals and even tested chemicals that are known carcinogens (like nitrates which are used to preserve meats).
What should we eat? I honestly don't think eating a salmon up to 16" in size (and probably bigger) is doing any more damage than all the other crap we are eating.
Look at cancer rates, diabetes, and now even autism - all blamed on our consumption of food in grocery stores.
Don't fool yourself by picking on one food option (salmon).
The only people who can say anything about this and gain respect is those who are actually growing and eating their own food, using clean, truly organic methods. That's a lot of hard work, and expensive.

People need to realize that eating fish ftom lake Ontario in moderate consumption shouldnt be a problem. People panic about it because they believe what the studies show. But people forget about all the chemicals that are sprayed on our foods, pink slime added to our meat and a product that is a wood gy products in our package cold cut meats.

I remember years back fishing the humber river dam north of bloor st and using live bait (emerald shiners) under a float. I remember lots of fish biting (eating or just trying to kill it) down on my active live shiner, setting the hook and fish on. So were they biting down on the shiner because of hunger or out of anger, didn't really matter.....

5.5 lb leader on a salmon? Must be a half dead chinny then, def. not a chrome king, even with a half dead one, against the current would be impossible to land on a 5.5 lb leader, i call b.s. on that one but yes i have used 8 and 10 lb leaders on rivers, like bville creek or the ganny or oshawa creek or the g-bay tribs where there is lots of room to walk around and maneuver fish out of log jams but def. not in the spot i was at last weekend.

Been a weird year that's for sure, in the last few weeks I've caught "bright" fish in the river and big black ones out in the lake in 60 FOW. I wouldn't go so far as to say they are "chrome" but some are a light shade of grey in the river.
There seems to be a bit of an elitist attitude here towards catching salmon in the river. If that's what one person enjoys, so be it, but the condescending remarks really serve no constructive purpose. I personally like to catch fish, any fish, in many ways. I'm fortunate enough to be able to troll offshore on a regular basis, but that is a very pricey endeavour which for a lot of the guys isn't an option, particularly the young guys. But I also enjoy walking the rivers, both are enjoyable in their own way.
Well, here's a 28 lb salmon I caught actually on a 6 lb fluoro main line. Took about 20 to 30 mins to land. Caught it at the base of a very long pond about 20 ft wide, unobstructed area. About 2 km upriver from lake, it was fresh out of the lake as they were all running up that night.

Here's a hog my son (at the time 10 years old) caught on his own, don't know the weight, but comfortably over 25 lbs, using an 8 lb fluoro main line, no leader. In high current section of the river, no major obstructions, about 2.5 km from the lake, also fresh as they were running that early evening.

Yea but it was not the same river Pikeattack aka Fishman was fishing,and who knows you could have netted the one your holding,and that young lad is probably not even your son........and the list goes on. Nice fish man and great job on the son, fishing buddy for life.
Haha Fishfreek, yeah I'm waiting for all the excuses now. All I can say is these fish can be caught on 6 lb lines. We have really good rods mind you (I have a 14.5 ft Raven) which I think makes a huge difference, but then again, what do I know.

Also, a alb leader is not 5 lb, i could land those fish on 6 lb line in an open area no problem as well, just gotta take your time and if its an open area, unlike the area i was fishing, you can let out lots of line.

OK pikattack, I'm glad you now agree with us, that it is possible to catch a salmon on a 6 lb line, that is fresh from the lake. Because that is how I caught a lot of my fish. Some with trees, some in high current areas. We went out today and caught a few +20 lbers in pretty tight areas. Not easy, but doable. We lost many yes, but landed some too after 15 minute fights. All fresh fish, jumping almost 2 ft out of the water when they have a hook in their mouth. Was an awesome day of fishing.

Rain does need to feature, but as long as that fresh water is coming out of the river (even days later), the fish will run. If that isn't correct, I have to get a new set of eyes, because they would be lying to me. LOL.

I disagree that dark fish have come in and out of the river. We fish via boat in Lake O, and we catch dark fish in 140 feet of water. In fact most fish that are caught from early August to September out of Lake O are dark, unless you are talking about shakers or immature 2 year olds. There's no way these fish would have entered the streams, otherwise they would be dead from the high temperatures, they wouldn't last 1 day.

Anyhow, it doesn't matter what you believe pikeattack. I'm going to be clear on my facts, those fish were jumping out of the water when hooked, it took 20 minutes to land them, it was not easy, it was not like pulling on deadwood, we had great equipment which I credit to landing the fish, I saw them running from the lake (yes not that fish, but I did see those fish coming up several hundred feet and believe they were part of the run).
My conclusion, fresh salmon out of the lake can be caught on 5 to 6 lb test line, even by 10 year olds.

In the photo with my son, it might look bright, but it wasn't, it was also overcast. Taken I believe end of September-ish. My guess is it was about 4 or 5 pm.
I absolutely agree with you, and have never seen salmon run in full daylight. From what I have seen, they wait until it (a) rains or (b) it has recently rain and their is some good flow and dusk is about to set in. There could also be an early morning run, but I've never seen that myself.
Wow, those salmon have serious power! Much stronger than a Muskie or Laker of similar size. They either spool you or snap the line... I've gotten two to hit so far not snagged today, but they got me beat... Lol. They are nice and fresh too. A few more hours left, but not too optimistic. Still a nice sight to see them.
intothedeep - what rod are you using. For me that is the key between landing a salmon in the river and not. I have a 14.5 ft Raven. It really is a superstar rod. For big jumps it still keeps the tension on the line, for runs it knows when to give.
I wouldn't want to pull in a salmon with anything less than a 10ft rod. I'm sure others have managed, but it gets really difficult below that (unless the fish is snagged with 15 lb line).
You have to admit one thing, even though you lost those fish, it is a pure adrenaline rush eh?
Long rods make all the difference in the world. The rod does the work far more than the line and thus allows for lower test to be used. Looking forward to some of that rush myself this Friday. markbellino, do you fish Oakville?Quote:

Using the wrong rod for sure a weed ripping walleye rod. It's stiff but very short.

Also it takes me around a half hour to land a chrome salmon on 10 pound line unless its a coho. Almost all salmon jump when you are fighting them especially males if you are judging that they are fresh by the fact that they jump you are hugely mistaken.

Thats the thing they loose fish while i CATCH them last time i checked losing a fish was the same as not catching it. I seem to be out fishing most pretty dang good on here, others on here may be older than me but. For me years come with knowledge, for others the years come alone..... Also I've honestly only had one bad experience out fishing ever and that was with a snagged trying to snag a big brown, so not too sure what you're talking about....

I had a guide and outdoor lover as my father, I learned things before I was 10, that takes many a lifetime to learn. Those are words to remember and live by, once you understand them. It's not about how big, or how many are brought to hand, but rather the experience.
Can honestly say I've never had a bad day on the water, don't care whether I land any or not, have never gotten upset or tossed a rod because a monster spit the hook, or broke me off. In fact I find Im often "happy" when big fish be they 25pound Nooks, or 40 inch Musky "win" and get a quick release.
Its the journey, not the destination.
Pondo, yes. I am lucky enough to have Bronte around the corner for me. I checked two weeks ago, didn't see much. But I do expect some this weekend. Will probably be out on Sunday. We were out on the boat this past Sunday trolling in front of the mouth, and marked very little - not nothing - did see some late stagers, but not like previous weeks, so the fish must have run with that rain we got last week.
I'm hoping the little bit of rain we get on Saturday will bring them in, overcast on Sunday with some light rain will keep them coming. Anyhow, maybe I will see you out there, I where a vest with a Raven badge on the front and a camo hat. Will be with my 12 year old boy.

Pikeattack, I'm not sure what you're going on about, to be honest. Are you trying to prove something? I've never seen anyone argue about a topic like this. I guess I just need to stop replying. I'm glad you can catch fish, but when you started you said that you can't catch a salmon on a 5 lb lead. You even said it was impossible with a half dead boot in current. Then you added trees and bushes. Then you added it had to be chrome. Any other rules you want to add before the fish we all catch meet your very high level of standard and count as anything.
Now here's the kicker. It actually doesn't matter what your standard is. I'm out to enjoy fishing. I have an awesome time with my son, and we have some good one on one battles with some pretty big, aggressive fish. I thank God I'm able to do that. I'm not on here to prove anything to anyone, I'm here to share good stories and techniques with people who have a similar/greater passion for the sport than I do.
Definitely Habs. He's great at it now, after almost 4 years at it. He landed a nice 18 lb fish all on his own this past weekend. He didn't want any help, including landing it, getting the hook out, taking a photo and reviving the fish for safe release. I was like ... huh, he sure grew up fast!Quote:

Wow man, you sure are super duper! Now pull up your pants (or waders) and turn your hat around the right way LOL! I jest pikeattack but only to a point. You are not 'better' than any other fisherperson here nor are you any more talented at catching fish. One day, you will realize that it isn't a competition to catch fish in a barrel and may even grow to detest it. Maybe not. I guess only time will tell but for now, you really have to come off your high horse and stop talking smack. Markbellino, we must be neighbours lol! I will look out for you when I'm out and about. I usually don't fish Bronte until the salmon are pretty much done and the trout come in but I do walk through there a lot with the dog. Good luck with the lad. They are in now.
I hear you Pondo about leaving the salmon alone, but it's easier for me to get my 6 year old out now, then when it gets real cold later on. We try and go north of QEW and find a quiet spot. I freak out too much when I see people with braid lines and treble hooks (grapples) loaded with split shot - I don't need my kids to see that.
We try and target a healthy looking fish, and for sure jacks (for dinner)! That's why for me, it's not about the numbers, but fishing sustainably and for the challenge. If we do catch a salmon we aren't going to keep, we work fast to get that fish back in the water.
But for sure the best technique is to leave them alone, and wait for the steelhead later on in Nov.

In the river, most of the salmon I see putting on an aerial act have been hooked somewhere other than the mouth, not always, but mostly.
For Habs, I get that you are a firm believer that salmon in the river are not actively biting of their own free will, in many cases I can see why you are so steadfast in this belief. I have however seen chinooks go out of their way to attack flatfish/kwikfish (which I was tossing for rainbows at many different times) so they aren't all being sniped, flossed or whatever anyone wants to call it. That all being said, isn't it funny when many people hook a salmon and they say "it's in the mouth!!!" Like they can't believe it. I've never heard this comment made with any other type of fishing anywhere. Yes I do get the cynicism towards river salmon fishing, but I still enjoy walking the rivers for them, better than sitting on the couch feeling my a-- grow.
That's it for me now though, my Christmas opens tomorrow, I won't be on a river again til the 3rd week In November now, lots of birds, bunnies and bucks for me to get after.

For sure salmon hit flatfish/spinners/bright flies etc if you can get them irate enough. Some may even take a single egg/bead etc. What percentage of salmon are hooked this way more than a k or 2 upstream?

They do hit. I've seen it with flies. Very early morning with roe. And definitely with spoons. Not sure why, but I think mostly out of aggression.
However, I'll be honest, from what I've seen for every 1 that hits properly, there are probably 20 or 30 that have been snagged or flossed.
I have been bottom drifting for the past couple of years, but find that technique accidently hooks too many fish in the tail or side, which I hate. I prefer to break my line if a fish gets hooked this weay instead of tiring the fish (which is another reason why I use 6 lb, easy to break). But lately we have gone to float fishing. Every fish is in the mouth, and you'd be surprised how many fish you get. It's definitely not flossing, as it's pretty hard to target anything with a float and a 6 foot leader. I can't say for sure they have "eaten" the bait, but certainly 100% is in the mouth, so it's impossible to tell. I'd like to think they went after the bait.
Anyhow, I don't do a lot of river fishing this time of the year, I mainly go out to take my young children so they can have some fun. I teach them to catch, revive and release everything with care. Maybe later on in Oct or Nov we will hit the tributaries again looking for trout. That is much more fun!
