From what I've heard / read wild boar are so destructive that people / groups that have been dealing with them say they wouldn't wish it on anyone else.
I don't think its huge numbers but there are wild boar in Canada in provinces West of Ontario. I believe Manitoba or Alberta had/ have bounty rewards out for wild boar

Like Carp (especially including the Common Carp) some seem incapable of understanding the damage that invasive species are doing if they don't have a good understanding of the original environment.

Wild boar are no different from pigs in their ability to multiply rapidly, the average litter consists of 4–6 piglets, with the maximum being 10–12. Having watched a 650 lb boar tear up an area within minutes there is no doubt in my mind the damage that they can cause left unchecked. They need to be stopped and relying on hunting alone is a recipe for disaster. I have spent enough time in Florida to see the mayhem they have caused there.

Again, non-native and invasive are not the same thing.
Invasive species are by definition harmful to existing species, economies, health, etc. Introduced species that do not harm existing systems and which are broadly seen as desirable are by definition not invasive.
So yes, the fact that people like them does mean they're not invasive. That's the definition. Look it up.

They can be pests and are, in certain farm/ranch areas.
Back home, they are along a major river bottom so they are less in cattle and farm country.
One year, from Oct 1st to the 15th of November we caught 65.
Recently in Ontario, hog prices were around .88 lb. Very little overhead involved and .88 cents a pound, pretty good return and loads of fun.
Hog prices will continue to rise, pork is on more and more these days, with more bacon wrapped food being introduced.
It is the ONLY effective way to hunt them but land owners will have to let us in and we, hunters, will have to all get together. I can't wait!!!Quote:

We have already had wild boars or feral boars escape from a local game farm a few years back. One pair had a den on a farm I hunt and they flattened acres of corn and tore up a few lawns as well. I wouldn't want to see them introduced to cause even more damage.

They definitely won't be friends to fruit growers, farmers and cattlemen.
They are fun to hunt, live trap and catch with dogs, but until you see their destruction on agriculture, it is hard to grasp.
Along wild river bottoms that are State Forests and far away from agriculture, they are quite the sport. Otherwise they are extremely problematic.
They physically root up crops, introduce salmonella via consumption and/ or environmental exposure, poison water holes and root the ground causing the potential for severe erosion.
They are extremely hard to fence out of an area and it takes daily fence patrol to inspect/repair "pig proof" fencing.
It would likely take a few decades for them to be seriously problematic on a large scale, but it would just be a matter of time.
The only fence that will hold pigs, is one that can hold water. If water can get through a fence pigs will too, in about half the time it took the water to find a hole.Quote:

This info above is not correct. The hogs that have/are destroying much of the Carolinas are indeed wild boar (European boar). The ones that have/are devastating Smoky Mountains nat. Park are the result of a game preserve escape back in the 20's. There's been some hybridization with local feral pigs since then but the core genetics are still European. They've pretty much destroyed much of the Carolinian habitat in the park and are threatening a lot of the native plant species. I've had a lot of people take SCA jobs for the summer down in the park doing European boar eradication. Pretty cool summer job - getting put up in a state park cabin, getting paid to sitt on shelled corn bait piles with NVG goggles at night, armed with a shotgun and 000 with a laser sight. You first wax the sow with the first shot then you shoot the balance of "the sounder" when the little hogs make their way back to dead mamma. In daytime you visit the mud wallows and crawl through rhododendron thickets in a pair of shorts, with a Llama .357 pistol.Quote:

A few years ago we were told a whole bunch of wild boar escaped up on the Bruce Peninsula. Locals said everyone was cleared to shoot them on sight by the MNR. We all watched an hoped to see them and many people talked like this was the beginning of the Porkopalypse...I never saw a track...no one I talked to saw anything. To this day people still let on they are all over the place up there because they see tracks with cloven hoof prints. Well, I think they are deer tracks.

Thirteen wild boars from Germany were purchased by Austin Corbin from Carl Hagenbeck, and released into a 9,500-hectare game preserve in Sullivan County. Several of these boars escaped, though they were quickly hunted down by locals. Two further introductions were made from the original stocking, with several escapes taking place due to breaches in the game preserve's fencing. These escapees have ranged widely, with some specimens having been observed crossing into Vermont.[72]
In 1902, 15–20 wild boar from Germany were released into a 3,200-hectare estate in Hamilton County, New York. Several specimens escaped six years later, dispersing into the William C. Whitney Wilderness Area, with their descendants surviving for at least 20 years.[72]
The most extensive boar introduction in the US took place in western North Carolina in 1912, when 13 boars of undetermined European origin were released into two fenced enclosures in a game preserve in Hooper Bald, Graham County. Most of the specimens remained in the preserve for the next decade, until a large-scale hunt caused the remaining animals to break through their confines and escape. Some of the boars migrated to Tennessee, where they intermixed with both free-ranging and feral pigs in the area. In 1924, a dozen Hooper Bald wild pigs were shipped to California and released in a property between Carmel Valley and the Los Padres National Forest. These hybrid boar were later used as breeding stock on various private and public lands throughout the state, as well as in other states like Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, West Virginia and Mississippi.[72]
Several wild boars from Leon Springs and the San Antonio, Saint Louis and San Diego Zoos were released in the Powder Horn Ranch in Calhoun County, Texas, in 1939. These specimens escaped and established themselves in surrounding ranchlands and coastal areas, with some crossing the Espiritu Santo Bay and colonizing Matagorda Island. Descendants of the Powder Horn Ranch boars were later released onto San José Island and the coast of Chalmette, Louisiana.[72]
Wild boar of unknown origin were stocked in a ranch in the Edwards Plateau in the 1940s, only to escape during a storm and hybridize with local feral pig populations, later spreading into neighboring counties.[72]
Starting in the mid-1980s, several boars purchased from the San Diego Zoo and Tierpark Berlin were released into the United States. In recent years, wild pig populations have been reported in 44 states within the US, most of which are likely wild boar–feral hog hybrids. If I am not mistaken , a few of these articles appeared in the OOD mag.
There was one just north of Conn On., One around Kincardine, and one around Gananoque, that I am aware of, they are all closed down no longer in operation, this all happened while my buddy a C.O. was still working and he was quite upset as he bow hunted the farm near Gananoque.
The farm near Conn, we saw the odd pig running around inside the fence as we drove by, and the one near Kincardine, my friend and I delivered some heavy duty fencing to that operation.
These were all set up as hunting operations, when it comes to privately owned , a good friend of mine that delivered with me the fencing, [he sold farming supplies] was also asked to close down his operation even though he raised only a few and sold, butchered for private consumption.
I do not think anyone here is actually wanting them to be introduced, but are saying that if and when they do appear they would gladly hunt them as it,s an opportunity to put some great meat on the table.

Yeah, that's why I stressed the "free", lol. I'm a diy hunter, don't plan on ever paying (other than license fees) to anyone for hunting (especially for pest species). I am disappointed in forced hiring of "outfitters" in many jurisdictions for other game species in Canada although I can see their "justifications". I'd consider a, lets say, 'bucket list' trip down there to help eliminate some hogs but not interested in paying to do pest control for them.Quote:

There is no closed season on feral pigs. They can be hunted any time of the day or night, using silencers, spotlights, night-vision scopes, AR-15’s, or AK-47’s. Thanks to Stephenville representative Sid Miller’s so-called pork chopper bill, they can be hunted from helicopters

I have a 3 day South Carolina free range hog hunt in January 2020. it's a group hunt (8 hunters) with crossbow magazine that sold out in 1 day.
Includes 5 star accommodations / food.
Transportation to and from the baited tree stands.

Free Hog Hunting in Texas ? is n't really free, you still have to pay non resident license fee, guides as most ranches are thousands of acres which do not hold hogs everywhere.
Just go to google and look up free hog hunting in Texas, lots of hits ie; first hog is around $400.00 then the second is free and so on.
But if you have all the info. go for it !
Well, $5 a tail likely wouldn't cover the gas (or beverage) costs to embark on such a safari but it's something, lol. Do they have a structured process for donating the hogs to local food bank organizations?
A safari to break the local-doldrum winter monotony, helping local food banks, bringing home a couple porkers for personal consumption, improving US-Canada relations, this is sounding better and better, ha ha.
Back in the day they used to have a boundy on gophers in Sask...it was peanuts, something like $0.05 for a pair of feet. Every kid with a Cooey was out all day....they nearly eradicated the buggers.Quote:
