Gun ban talks back after a sad weekend in NS

Well talks have scaled back since the beginning of covid 19. But since we have 1 a single madman go loopy in ns the rest have to suffer. No reports of the firearms used in the brutal incident that took place.

Never mind the ruthless killings that have taken place in the gta since the beginning of covid 19. Still several people have been killed in Toronto by gun violence,but because 1 person that went loopy the rest of the Canada needs to be punished. ( probably most still with unregistered illegal hand guns.)

Doesn't seem to make any sence when we all knows that someone will always go on a crazy rampage. Weather it be a gun a knife another vehicle a passenger on a grey hound bus and so on.

Just because the odd person who could give a chit less about others,shouldn't dictates the rest of Canadian's on firearms.


RIP NS times will be better

Gun or no gun the man was a peice of Shhhit and should have no bearing on what or what Canadians can or should have. He had his own police car maybe we need to ban them next it was a well thought out plan a sad day for many but please remember the man went loopy not the firearms that were used.

Trudeau should look in a mirror and see how many lives lost he is responsible for over the mismanagement of protecting Canadians against the virus. He's responsible for more lost lives then all mass shootings this country has seen.

I have noticed that they are not mentioning if he had a PAL and what type of firearm.

Based on the fact they have said nothing I am guessing he did not have a PAL and obtained a gun illegally.
If he had PAL they would have said so right away.

Weird how the Toronto van attack (10 dead 16 injured) didn’t result in restrictions of pedo-vans.

What are they doing about the true problem, mental illness???

That's my thoughts on it aswell if was a firearm destine to be banned I'm sure we would of heard about. My thoughts are regular rifle and a handgun ,but that is only speculation as they have not released the details of the firearm used .

I'm thinking they're keeping pretty tight lipped about it until they can piece it together as well as find all of the bodies. Watched an interview today with a couple of brothers from Oshawa who haven't heard from their parents since it happened. Their parents house in NS was one of the ones burned down, and apparently there were two gunshots heard in the area before the fire. Pretty tragic story, all of it.

It's sad that the first reaction is to spark up the gun control debate again. Firearms on the ban list or not, it wouldn't have made a shred of difference. Mass murder is banned as well. Nut jobs don't care. Figure out what turned him into a nut and address that problem.

Exactly!! This is not some nutbar grabbing a random firearm and going on a rampage. From reports I have read, this guy meticulously planned this event, event to the point of making a mock RCMP cruiser, and obtaining RCMP uniforms. No amount of gun control could have prevented this guy from completing his well thought out plan. The big question now is why !!

No surprise.

The accused obtained, and essentially recreated two police cruisers. He also obtained, or was able to recreate a Police uniform which was close enough to pass some scrutiny. This has been glossed over.

Very few details coming out of NS right now.

Interestingly enough, the alleged shooter is dead. So keeping investigation, and details closed in the effort to successfully prosecute is not the motivator.

However, the accused apparently was looking for his estranged ex-partner. Circumstances, which if merited it, would have resulted in a temporary seizure of any legal firearms he possessed.

NS is woefully understaffed by the RCMP outside of the main population centers.

I am not normally a conspiracy theorist, but the conduct of the RCMP throughout this seems an awful lot like damage control.

Remember some on here want guns banned and some on here believe if you put a military stock on a gun it becomes a super powerful assault rifle unlike with the old stock.

However it has been reported that the 3 main anti gun lobbies sent a letter to Blair asking for swift action on gun control going so far as to suggest he put an immediate ban on the sale of "assault weapons". In fact our state sponsored broadcaster is solely focused on the human story, and the fraudulent police equipment used. This is rare.

Again. Looks like spin, and damage control because unlike other "mass shootings" there is some element to this one that doesn't quite fit the narrative.

Was reading on another post that there was an eye witness who saw this loser take the RCMP guns after dispatching the officer. You would have to assume he then used those stolen RCMP guns to go on his shooting rampage. If this is in fact the case, then you can see why the RCMP are pretty tight lipped about what gun was used.

After the initial 2 murders, the RCMP constable rammed the suspects vehicle with her own. The suspect dragged her from her cruiser and shot her in the chest. Then relieved her of her service weapon ( and presumably any others in the vehicle, patrol carbine ( C8)?, shotgun?).

The suspect had a criminal record, and likely was not able to obtain firearms legally.

So this definitely doesn't fit the narrative that they're going for. RCMP response times, and their reluctance to send out a provincewide warning are also likely going to be under the microscope on this one.

There has already been one victims husband who is threatening to sue based on RCMP lack of response / inadequate response.

I may stand to be corrected but I'm being told the shooter had no license (PAL) from past problems. More gun control wont stop these types of heinous crimes.

Let's hope its not rushed while in this pandemic . Will only lead to another disaster without thinking it totally through.
I can see their sneaky little arses now trying to push it through.

And if this is the case of a non assault weapon they have nothing to push forward to. We already have tough laws against guns .

In reality we need to stop them from hitting the black market or coming from across the boarder. Banning assault rifles wont fix anything. I bet the coronavirus has impacted the guns coming in more than a ban itself. Bc is preparing for another pandemic on the street drugs . Short supply coming from across the border has led to increased price and horders buying all the fentanyl they can get there hands on. They think in the long run it will lead to more overdoses and deaths in the future.

Guns on the streets are also being slowed and probably the same a higher price tag.

As I have stated from the start, this looks like damage control on behalf of the RCMP.

The lack of definitive speech on behalf of the Feds ( let's remember that this IS the worst mass shooting in Canadian history), is quite unusual.

Possibly, and pure speculation, but the fact that it started at three murders, and became a "rampage" with mass casualties AFTER the suspect gained access to what was likely a handgun with several mags, and a C8 carbine ( likely 3x30 round mags), from an RCMP cruiser.

This won't fit the narrative of gun control, and in fact would show that the RCMPs own supplies possibly contributed in a large part to the body count.

Saw an update on the news this morning....he had an assault charge back in 2001, convicted in 2002..fined, 9 months probation, sent for anger management and banned (suspension of PAL?) of owning a firearm for 9 months.

Let's not forget, it was the inquiry from the 2014 Moncton shootings which put more firepower in the hands of single occupant RCMP cruisers in the first place.

There'll be plenty of time to discuss all the issues down the road,but,a little class,decorum and respect for the victims,survivors and families would be nice until the RCMP are finished with the investigation.

The Gun control measures were an after thought on their election platform. Only when the Liberals knew they were in trouble and had to go after the Toronto vote did it become an election issue.

They even staged that 'gun threat' to the PM and made a big show with the RCMP and bullet proves vests prior to announcing that 'promise'. Really a sad spectacle.

He was indeed given a mandate and if you do not like the voting system,first past the post,most seats count then change the system.

Well for once we can agree on something, it is true that he was going to reform the voting system and indicated that he would abolish first past the post.

If he had the conviction in 2002 he could still apply for a PAL five years later. I believe the rational behind this is to allow people who had had problems with the law move on,take up their hunting again and what not.Most prohibition terms for firearms last for 5 years usually and only in severe cases a life time ban on firearms.

Exactly the point lol. He only talks about what he wants to . Before he even got the details of this tragedy. More gun control talk yet it doesn't seem like gun control would of made a difference. Including the danforth shooting that was a stolen hand gun from a gun shop. The point being is the shooter illegal obtained a firearm witch isn't that hard to do. Most people seeking to go on a rampage will find their own sources where ever they need to be it black market or legal firearms or stolen ones. Most domestic violence deaths would be by legally obtained firearms but not these assault weapons they want to ban. Most of the shootings in Toronto are made by illegal guns from across the border. Yet the doctors push for a law that will not help curb the gun violence. Too many are misinformed about what's really happening.

The reporters question from what I remember of the interview was "when is the government bringing in the new gun control measures"your seem to think a reply would be we don't know the facts right now and ended it.

If it was a bill that is truly accepted as being for the safety of Canadians....the Liberals would have tabled it long ago (as a majority) and received royal ascent. However Liberals didn't, especially after SNC, as they we afraid to lose votes/seats in the upcoming election. It became a political 'hot potato' for them....and how many votes it would garner vs how many they would lose.

Not anti-police, nor RCMP.

In fact I worked for them when I came to the Nations Capital. In various capacities, with different elements.

It is however the bureaucrats, and the fact that as the Federal Police Force, they are more subject to the whim, and pressure from the Federal Govt. ( Like the arbitrary reclassification of firearms without actual approval), which makes them subject to more ridicule, and scrutiny.

This has nothing to do with front line policing, or regular members. What you're picking up on is the fact that they are definitely playing the cards close on this one, in what appears to be damage control.

As someone with law enforcement members in the family , I wanted to know why the mindset of supposedly pro police,conservatives has changed ? Why? It was a reasonable question. BBD responded appropriately, carry on.

My dad was a cop. I tend to be pro police. In many cases our police are handcuffed and unable to use their authority with wisdom and reasonable force. Maybe police bureaucracy prevented the issuing of an amber alert immediately by the officers on the ground.
However,in a democracy police should be held to account. What can be done better. What should have been done. Why were people not properly warned. Were lives lost because of poor reactions and procedures. All reasonable questions.
The police dealing with the most difficult criminals often are not properly supported. In this case it appears some criticism is justified. I expect some fine police officers have some questions too.
Also, free speech even if if it is wrong should be allowed. Just refute it.

On the RCMP side, did the murdered officer show undue restraint in the preparation to defend herself and use force to kill because of the fear of consequences. I don’t know but I am sure it happens today and it even happens to citizens who use reasonable force. If an officer had shot him before he killed anyone, how would that work out for the officer? Would we support him or her? And even would we support a citizen who used reasonable force to stop the murderer?

The shooter did not have a PAL so that means he was illegally in possession of these gun(s) and we do not know right now but they could also be illegal guns. So tell how how could stricter gun controls for legal gun owners could have stopped this mass murder? I know what could have helped - an amber alert.....that could have helped but someone in NS thought Twitter was a better media to use to warn people of this shooter.

Our system is good as it is. We cannot prevent every miss use of the system. The murderer in this case used illegal weapons in an illegal way. This is the biggest issue in Canada. Illegal gun smuggling and use.

2. Further delving into those stats reveal that of those that are, the majority ( more than 80%) are committed with guns that were not part of the legal supply chain, nor licensing.

He said legalizing weed would stop the black market but it didn't even dent it. I don't know a single person who goes to the legal stores. The legal stores are double the black market prices and not as good of quality.

I am not ok with gun crime. The Federal Government's attempts, and mis-handling that particular file is what is at issue.

The stats I have cited were off, as I was familiar with Stats Cans 2013 figures, I was not aware that they re-did them in 2016, however link is attached.

Of all violent crime in 2016, 3% was committed with a firearm. In those cases, a third of the guns are recovered, and of those, only a third can be found the have been registerable, or able to be traced.

The RCMP has even admitted years ago that firearm related crimes are greatly inflated stats ( Mauser SFU 2013).

Yes. Gang related homicides are up. Yes, those predominate the crime stats for firearms.

The full picture is that our current firearms laws are working just fine. It is the other side of the equation where the smuggling, import, and black market of same is having the most detrimental impact on Canadian society.

That one smells.

If the officer did so, she likely would have been ready. The element of surprise was hers.

If the suspect did so, they would have been able to capitalize on surprise / shock, confusion, and possible trust when the constable may have mistaken the fake cruiser and suspect in uniform for one of her colleagues.

Exactly. This madman prepared his attack quite carefully and effectively. Even if I was an armed citizen I likely would have never shot at what looked like a cop. He may very well have taken guns from the officer he killed but he started his rampage with one of his own. There’s a reason that info is being hidden. If it was an AR15 it would be on every front page with the picture of a rifle that’s “not” an AR15.

My point is, and has remained, that the issue is not our current gun control legislation, which is working.

It is the supply of illegal guns and the lack of concern criminals exhibit for any penalties associated with same.

Again. 3% of homicides are committed with firearms.

At 249 for a population of 31 million in 2018, you genuinely have a greater chance of being struck by lightning ( 1 in 3000), or dying of the flu ( 1 in 50,000), than dying by firearm related homicide in this country.

None as far as I know a suicide is when you kill yourself and homicide is the deliberate and unlawful killing of one person by another.So with that said I believe there will be a separate category.

All killings are unlawful. Do these stats include deaths by hunting accident? Do they clearly identify if any were caused by licensed gun owners? I know you see where I’m going here. I remember reading an article where Dr’s were inflating gun crimes by including kids being shot by BB guns. Those doctors had no idea if the BB guns used were PAL rated and considered as firearms. Yes, we can spin Stats anyway we want. Pollsters make good livings off stats.

The RCMP admitted that any crime report where a firearm was present, became a "gun crime" and was reported as such.

Meaning if you got into an argument with your neighbor, and one of you had a PAL with an Enfield in the basement, it became a gun crime...
