What the heck is going on here

Well I'm going to bring this up as nobody else has and I could be kicked off for rocking the boat.

This was a great site prior to Covid when everyone got along and we actually posted in the hunting and fishing section.

Then along came Covid and everything really blew up. Many people disagreed with each other and people took many different sides. There was a lot of slugging it out and the Admins stepped in.

Many of us were cited and some I did not agree with. I think everyone should be big enough to take it, but it is what it is or was. The pandemic is pretty much over.

But I have noticed that admins (I will not name names) are cracking down way to much I think they do need to back off a bit as we are all old enough and there will always be some arguing.
Many people are now being chased away and from both sides and this is bringing down the site.

People are being cited for even the slightest reply and I think it is going to far, I'm probably not the only one who would say this.

I know of quite a few people who are no longer participating and it can be seen in the threads, we are losing very knowledgeable people to this site who have a very long active history.

I think admins might need to take a step back and a breather.

It's time we ask and invite theses people back and relax the rules.

Well the censorship isn't just a tool the Liberals use, it seems the admins like it too.

I recently made a post that one of the admins sent me a "good job" message however the next day the thread was locked and that very post was deleted by another admin.
"Excellent post today at 12: 46 "

When I told that same admin that it was deleted by an admin without infraction or a message I got back.

"Why??? It didn't break any rules."

Some people hate to think fiscally or about budgets or even facts.... and some don't like to argue with ideologues and be insulted, my skin is just a bit to thick to quit thinking and caring about ethics, morals and facts. So unfortunately for them I stayed. Working from home gives me the flexibility to listen to speeches, debates, interviews etc., for example today I've already solved one issue and run a SQL sample report to give to the customer to see if it meets their requirement, the background noise is this...

Anyone can choose to search for facts, to look for truth etc.... but some just don't like facts, thinking etc. or like budgets, or thinking fiscally or ethically... so for now I'll drop the small accurate truth bombs and maybe a few will try to do that too.

I have been cited numerous times on here but I do take it in stride. But some has gone to far I think and another member informed me he was leaving for now for the same reason.

I think the admins need to give some room and pick the battles only when it gets out of hand.

I'm continually surprised by members who are surprised by them; we diligently cite and relink them at every available opportunity the better to inform our guidelines as a community.

Over the past two+ years we've had Admins and Mods come and go and of course each and every one is going to be different, and orient themselves differently. Tenured members are not exempt from the Rules of Conduct that CalTek established back then, and when we see Reported Posts again and again querying the same member, we must take it into account. We are not grooming the Forum looking for folks to pick on.

It's not just the pandemic through, right? There's been a lot of different content, hunting/fishing/outdoors-oriented, political, environmental, global -- all of which have been worth bringing up as topics of discussion to the Forum. I've always balked at the continued suggestions of getting rid of the Off Topic, because I feel people need that outlet. We have since compromised, and made it so that new members must first contribute a minimum of 25 posts to the Hunting/Fishing/Outdoors threads before being granted access to Off Topic. We ask that you treat each other with the respect and dignity you expect to be treated with, in kind. If you've received an infraction, it is likely because another member flagged your post and found it inappropriate. I should also point out, you can always bring an infraction up for discussion to Admin in a PM:

Moderators are active members of the community and have been empowered with the ability to not only police the forums but to give guidance and help facilitate discussion. They understand our conduct policy and are able to enforce it, and what they deem inappropriate. Meghan, I going to step in here for a moment but the last time I was sent an email was for for something where I wasn't even insulting the person and 2 posts down I was joking with them.
I am not the only one this has happened to it has happened numerous time as well as threads being shut down for literally no reason with no follow up emails. We are chasing away good members on here for no reason.

What some admins have taken to be someone insulting another isn't always the case just like for me. There needs to be a bit of stepping back. If someone is outright insulting someone such as "Greatwhite your a BasT" that is grounds to step in I agree but telling someone to put down their joint I would disagree.

At some point we may have zero members, which means the site will cease to exist. When I look at the number of members online now it is like 20% of what it was and it's the same complaint every time.

Meghan if you feel this is not the place to debate or discuss this just say so. I feel it is the right place and I hope the other Mods join in to give their perspectives.

But I hate to see this site go down and at this point it is.

If you're comfortable talking about this on here, you weren't given an infraction, you were given a warning from a Reported Post. It would be no different than my PM-ing you, but it's public for all other MODS to see (as I've stated, I prefer transparency when it comes to the Forum Rules.)
If you're still raw about it, you could always reach out to the person cited on that warning email and have them agree it was all in jest.

I do realize it wasn't an infraction but really just a warning. But what I am getting at is I think things are being jumped on to quick and sometimes you need to read into what is being said. Maybe if Mods are unsure it might help to ask the two people involved what is going on.

I do know of members who were warned when there was really nothing to warn about.

Many members were considered decent members have or are now considering leaving and these are members on what I would call both sides (What I would call the Left and Right on here).

It's kind like when I handle my kid's I choose which point I will intervene. I think we need realize there will be some slogging between different groups as that is natural but I do agree name calling is not right.

And its quips like this makes one wonder why make the effort. Guess numerous pm's about hunting options isn't enough to gardner any respect. Ya one writes "that was a joke" but as always behind every joke is some thread of intent.
Always was one for some good debate however the rules of debating should be followed. Start mud slinging and it goes down hill fast. I believe more people have stopped posting because of constant bombarment than anything mods/admin have done.

You cannot know every detail of every member who incurred an infraction/was warned about their behaviour infringing on an infraction. There are Private Messages at play in addition to what was posted on the Forum.

No they are not maybe that was a poor way say it.

But I have seen many times where someone was warned when even I could not figure out for what.

But it's obvious that many members on here are feeling pushed away and outside of the covid pandemic these were all good members and they came from both sides.

The only reason I am bringing this up is because I don't want to see this site go down.

I am also aware of some past mods that thought the rules were going to far.

I do believe the rules are being pushed to far. Maybe this is because the Covid threads brought out the worse in everyone. But for the most part that is over.

Full disclosure. Yes I was also guilty of slogging it out with several on here and specifically 3 people on here during Covid. (I won't be using their name but most know who they are)

In those case I was guilty and deserved to be warned about the rules on the site.

it truly was a joke. you got me on my first bear and bird, I am forever grateful of that. im even waiving at every boat I see out there on lake O outside the bluffs hoping it might be u lol

the way I saw it, some think the mods are part of the conspiracy to censor comments ... which is not the case.
I understand ure just trying to follow the rules, and pushing for the forums to go back to hunting and fishing and outdoor stuff.

I apologize to all since my joke did not come out the way I intended it to ... it sounded way funnier in my head.

I am also optimistic that the pandemic was a crazy time when we were not ourselves, and that we're all re-emerging from our various goblin modes as better people.

We've all been there myself included. Main reason I took up the request for a mod figured try and be part of the solution. If anyone wants to know why actions have been taken there is an exclusive mod forum where we meet and discuss concerns and how to best address them however its hard to get consensus when you're alone.
If anyone really wants to make a difference I challenge you to walk the walk.

It is really good that g.w. dared to bring this up.
I am on the forum for many eyars,and see the same happening-old and valuable members leaving en masse.When spoke about it a while ago,some even commented : out of the old,in with the new...very much counterproductive approach in my mind.

I think - this post may earn me also a "mark"beside my name !!!
The Forum took a turn of heavy handing many minor issues,and to make the matter worse-all of the sudden.All this to a degree- with a slight feeling of bias.

Some things are addressed are all right-but some of the message sent out is outright discouraging.
Some times there is a feeling ,that some things get non addressed -yet others are handed with heavy hand.This raises a concern about aligning with certain ideas -versus enforcing rules.
Then -heavy handed "expalination "of rules,up to and including "do not dare to touch moderators -or else".
All within the concept of-forum rule reminders.

More then once ,the moderators take active part in barter ,or arguments.
I was always wondering-if one is a moderator,why the moderator needs to take part in contraversial topics / close topics with remarks offending one side/or make personal comments.
I do not believe,this is the way it should be.
Just as a reminder-the posting for seeking new moderators explicitly states-one needs to be diplomatic.

I understand being a moderator is not easy,and likely a not really thankful job, their work is much appreciated.



There was explanations presented here earlier-the Forum is a private enterprise, following rules has no alternative.
I fully agree with following the rules-but if following rules leads to major erosion of members-eventually it is counterproductive.

We need the Forum as much the Forum needs us(if there is a desire to have the forum up/running).If slow death is an option-there is nothing us-members can do.

Some would say-do not just bring up problems,offer solutions too.
Adjusting rules -doing more subtle approach-and openly presenting the case(some way can be found)when and why rules were enforced with heavy punitive results -not just when threads are closed..........would perhaps help us understand better what is happening/take away the doubt : they heavy handed only"me".

This post is with the intent to help,pelase take it as constructive criticism.

The Forum is great,and it would be a shame to let it die.We are on a good path to see that happen,soon.

I did think of commingle a Mod on here but decided against it because of the struggles I saw some Mods dealing with.

I agree it is a tough Job.


I think most of the problems the Mods have dealt with have been in the Off topic section.

But as Mosquito said there can be a broadview as to what is offensive. I think maybe it should be limited to real name calling and slanderous comments and less on content.

Mods are not all the same either. Some are tougher about the rules being followed than others. That's why mods discuss posts that seem to break the rules to one mod, but not another.

Well let me say this - people should have the right to express themselves no matter what the subject - after all we are assuming that we are grown up enough to be able to discuss things - if someone gets offended because a certain subject is being brought up then I say - too bad - grow up and don't be so thin skinned - where does it say that you can expect to go through life without being offended - religion, politics, race, guns .etc are all thought provoking subjects and people should have a choice to talk about them - these are interesting subjects - over the years I have got a lot of warnings - wish I had a nickel for every one I got - and a lot of my posts were locked down - didn't know why - being from across the border we have an inclination to say what is on our minds - stand up and be counted - the worse thing that can happen - and it is happening now all over - if your view doesn't side with the popular view then people try to shut you up - and when that happens society is going down the drain - yes I think too many posts are locked down on this site -

I agree Joe, except this is a forum with rules. It is not a free speech site. If someone doesn't like the rules they should go elsewhere. I would bet that 1 out of 10 people who join , actually read the rules.

It seems to have escaped a few people that members here are guests at the permission of the operators of this site. Offensive and unacceptable are what they say they are. The rules are clearly spelled out and we either live within the rules or accept the consequences.

I have no quarrel with the moderation of this site. The moderators are volunteers who are trying to make this a better site. If "very knowledgeable" people are leaving this site in a huff because their posting habits ran afoul of the rules it's not the moderators who are the problem.

So as the one admin said ... it didn't violate any of the rules... yet was deleted by an admin.... maybe truth is just too controversial to that admin.

If the so called "rules" hinder free speech maybe the rules need to be changed - after all freedom of speech is the foundation of a free society - it is so important for free people to have this freedom - our founding fathers thought so too because they made it the first amendment to our constitution - remember this -

I am not saying that we are not guests (Members) here, but correct me if I am wrong but the site would not really be here if there were no members. Members are what make the site. I know of several sites that have zero activity because the members all left.

Yes I agree saying derogatory names including all racial, ethnic or sexual slurs is not acceptable.

But there will always be arguments over Politics, hunting, fishing and even the shape of clouds and if we remove those from the debates well then there is no site..

Being a member here is like being a guest in someone else's home. Make offensive remarks and don't be surprised if you are asked to leave.

The complaints here about moderation remind me of the whining about Range Officers at the gun club. More often than not it's the people that cause the most problems who do the most complaining.

Well said Badenoch. There is no free speech at a private forum where members agreed to a set of rules before joining.
Play by the rules or play somewhere else. Free speech happens when you stand on a box at Queen and Main and spew your stupid ideas.

I have seen some of the posts and saw nothing wrong with them including members having been singled out when they did nothing.

I have a question for you how successful would this site be with 5 members?

It seems to have escaped a few people that members here are guests at the permission of the operators of this site. Offensive and unacceptable are what they say they are. The rules are clearly spelled out and we either live within the rules or accept the consequences.

I have no quarrel with the moderation of this site. The moderators are volunteers who are trying to make this a better site. If "very knowledgeable" people are leaving this site in a huff because their posting habits ran afoul of the rules it's not the moderators who are the problem.

Troutslayer you have been here a long time like myself. Would you say the hunting and fishing sections are even remotely active anymore.

I go on there to see what is posted and I see very little. A good part is because many members have left.

I remember when there would be 5 or 6 new posts every single day in the hunting section. We don't really even see that in a whole week or even a month.

It's sad but I call a spade a spade and the site is rapidly declining.

What is anyone suggestion before more members leave? I know of several more already thinking of leaving and they are not even members who make snide remarks.

My point of the thread was to bring this to the attention of the mods hoping some thing might change.

But I get the feeling to some degree that the site would like to fail and go down to nothing just like many other Outdoors sites I have seen go.

I still intend to hang out (unless I am asked to leave) at least for now. But I find it pretty discouraging when the site is literately hoping to lose members and good members at that.

I feel the same Birdbuff. Anyone can have their own FB group and make their own rules.

It's one thing for members to leave it's another when they say they are leaving for specific reasons.

I guess I am trying to stop the bleed but I get the feeling many on here want to see the site fail.

Well I was hoping to get some positive input and maybe some others to look at the problem but from what I see and hear is it would be preferred to see the site fail and for that well I guess it's sad a once very active site going down and going down very fast.

I guess I look at it in a business point of view and if the customers are all leaving maybe there is a problem or like employees when you have a high turn over rate we look to understand why.

I agree with this, I don't have Facebook, but every friend I have who hunts uses Facebook groups, not forums.

Well in the end I beleive those who left are those that are not able to say This is my opinion and although your opinion is different than mine it is no less valued.
In other words you do you and I'll do me.
What has always been stressed is the elimination of passive/aggressive comments and other personal judgements and attacks.
Why does one feel to strengthen their argument tossing a derogatory comment of their opponent is needed.
For those that feel they are unable to abide by the rules of the forum and choose to leave all the best, if you decide you can communicate within the rules of the forum you'll be welcomed back.
Those that stay and want to shape a better forum I encourage participation and consider doing a term on the mod front.
As I said before I didn't like the direction this site was going volunteered as a mod and made it something I enjoy now.
If you feel that way now you have your example.

It’s absolutely true that this is a privately owned forum and there are rules to follow.

That said…there also used to be a time when you could toss the odd joke around and not be jumped on for it. It’s the old “ canary in the coal mine” analogy..ie this is just symptomatic of what’s happening everywhere. Very few people have any ability to absorb or tolerate anything anymore, no more thick skin.

I’ve gotten a few warnings and had threads locked over things that most would consider trivial. Oh well, shrug it off and move on.

Hmm.... looking at the results, based on he current criteria the admins can delete anything THEY find offensive based on their political, moral or ethics views and just say "its offensive" and censor a thread to fit their prejudices regardless of their veracity. One admin likes free speech and another censors and locks down discussions based on "offensive" ... well truth is offensive to some, political decisions this government are making are offensive to me and some and to others disagreeing with the government dictates is offensive, questioning the WEF or WHO gets the current government calling you names but gets the government compared to Hitler... sure must be offensiveness there to the ideologues. Just dodge the responsibility and let the admins run free and censor without justification, just perceived offence. Why not something simple like it take approval to lock a thread or delete posts? Why not some criteria? I've been criticized for being both too soft and too hard as an ADMIN and MOD, but I believe I'm fair, and I'm willing to listen to any concerns. I've always said we're not in the business of policing people, but there are rules that need to be followed, and you'd find that on any social platform. As for likening anyone to Hitler, not only is that hyperbolic, but it's insensitive to Holocaust survivors and everyone who died in the war. You're honouring him by bringing him up at all; don't you see that?

I am referring to Bill Maher's comments in regard to Justlied Trudeau and if you look at the history the coalition and dialogue and actions are reminiscent of the early 1930's actions by the National Socialists. I have already posted that a few times and it is irrelevant to this discussion about the indiscriminate censorship and the admin actions.

I am not grouping them, I have said several times already, one post I got a PM saying, good post from an admin and another deleted it and locked down the thread based it seems solely on their prejudices, I base that on the fact the first admin said "why it didn't break any rules". If there is going to be censorship and I don't disagree it should happen occasionally I am asking what is the criteria and will someone be held responsible or will the censoring better controlled....

The alternative seems to be that you like and want the censoring, true?

Truth IS Controversial to those that love the lie, I am just suggesting your or another admin has to read and approve the deleting and locking of a thread and not just an individuals prejudices. It makes it harder for the admins when there isn't clear guidelines IF they care about the integrity of their job. I know I would make a terrible admin, I would loose my temper at some of the lies and b.s. too easily if I had the responsibility, as is I can just say "what b.s." and forget it.


Now as for the group, the Chinese dictatorship, Stalin, Goebbels etc. all did not work alone, it was their supporters that made their action possible so to dismiss the fact that we have a ethics violating, conflict of interest guilty, liar etc. as a PM and to ignore those responsible for supporting him takes the individual accountability and throws it out the window. That's a fair point, it really depends on the context of the situation, though, as I've stated. Sometimes it starts off as a conflict of ideas, then denigrates over posts and someone says something antagonistic and then it just becomes a mud-slinging match. We didn't write the Rules we're just here to honour them; they have served this Forum well. Oftentimes it does become personal, not always, every situation is different. That's why we discuss situations in the MOD forum, as a group.

As I said, there are those that have a disdain or even hate facts, the tone shows the empirical proof that there are those that only want to listen to the viewpoints that represent themselves and not learn or be informed. A completely irrational and unrepresentative response to what I said also. The reason I see posted people are turning away is the leftist propaganda and misrepresentation of reality. When I post a youtube video as a video rather than a link it for the most part will have something to do with the topic. The lawyer Ian Runkle for example has many youtube post but I only post those relevant to firearms .

My assertions are also based on facts, as I said in this thread several times, I had one admin send me a "good post" message, while another deleted the same post, the first admin said

I didn't want to start a fight on the topic of censorship and the admins arbitrary and seemingly prejudiced actions, but I didn't start this thread and the result I would like to see is admins have to have a second person with a clear criteria required for approval to delete or lock threads. All admins are being grouped in by many as being left leaning ******** and that isn't fair to the ones that care about fair and open debates and discussions.

This -in my mind-is between the Forum and the members. Many displeasure was presented in the past about how things are happening ,and not just in this thread.
Why we do not ask them?

I spend some time tomorrow ,to see what " I "would recommend to change-on the existing rules(as from the link posted above).
But-i am nobody here...so i am not sure if my work will bear any fruit.

Meanwhile- as a token of good will : it would be good to consider to address perhaps the many complaints about heavy handing many posts?
I would see perhaps to review within the decision making chain the "consictency" + "bias" + (especially my concern)moderators active involvement in threads by taking sides, and/or making comments about certain topics/individuals).

So let me try an clarify as to encourage posts that are more forum friendly and aleve ones fear of posting.
The posts were reported by a member which triggered a review.
With 1 mod on leave and another absent only 1 mod was left to review the post and yes found them questionable however benign enough not to warrant immediate action.
When admin became available the posts were reviewed more closely

To paraphrase Malcolm Muggridge the concept of an open mind is the same as an open mouth to close on something good, but for many the implications it would have on morals and their view so scary that it is clear that horse won't drink. Well there might be a hundred reasons why guests might "lurk" as you put it, I can give you many right off the cuff. They do not have time to post and are busy with daily life, they come on here just for information. They could be new to hunting and fishing and feel they cannot right now contribute to the forum.
Some of them might not like the "debate" and prefer not to partake.

As a moderator have you had these lurking guests CONTACT you and tell you they are afraid to come onto the site because of the so called other members harassment? You see what we consider DEBATE you might consider harassment.

So now that you know some of the many reasons why you have so many guests WHAT ARE THEY GUESTS OFF, answer THE FORUM.

What is in the forum they want and desire, I would imagine a good guess would be CONTENT.

How do you get CONTENT, I imagine a good guess would be from the MEMBERS.

So now that the MEMBERS contributions are down, you know those pesky MEMBERS FOR LIFE designated by your own administration, not by us, guess what pretty soon no guests as there is no NEW CONTENT.

So if stealing money or painting yourself up in face colors to demean others is in my opinion a racist and weasel move am I allowed to label that person a racist weasel and thief without blow-back on this site when I become a mod? Asking for a friend of course, as I gotta get out for a laker trip now.

This thread has nothing to do with hutting and fishing,definitely.

Alas-since the Forum HAS ALLOWED OffTopic SubForum-actually this thread fits in the DESIGN of the SubForum.


Since Off topics(Covid-Politics -Elections etc etc)can not be imagined without contraversy-debate is to be EXPECTED.
Therefore the FORUM would need to figure out the Stirring the POT definition/application.


The thread itself does hovewer EVERYTHING to do with the Hunting and Fishing FORUM.
It actually raised a flag-to try to see what is causing the issue,and perhaps open channels how to better the dying Forum.

Unfortunatelly-so far we have seen none of that.
(maybe-there is a slight willingness to change some of the rules though-but this has yet to be seen)

Considering the overall attitude on the related posts,i start to loose all my faith,that the Forum will survive much longer.
