Well, I ordered a smoke pole.

I did not get my hands on them but was given some Cabelas gift cards so decided to go with an introductory muzzleloader.

I decided on the Traditions Pursuit Ultralight, the main reasons behind this over the TC Impact were the hammer design being substantial and a spur being available as well as the overall weight. Hunting now has become a family event in our home and the weight of the gun is significantly less than the TC, so this is something that my wife would be able to go out and shoot.

The reviews have been almost identical between the 2, they both have systems for starting sabots easier and accelerated methods of removing the breech when needed, they are both 209 primed and 50 cal, the only fault of the TC are the hammer and a huge plus people bring up about the Pursuit is the light weight, they are both supposed to be very accurate.

The gun is on backorder, they claim 2 weeks to 2 months, but I have tons of time before the next muzzleloader season so not worried at all.

Nice! Nothing better than new gear. Especially a new gun... :)

A whole new sport essentially here, already looking at options for shooting it that will not break the bank, blister pack ammo is as expensive as 12ga sabot slugs, planning to buy pistol bullets and bulk sabots as well as hard cast to seat in the sabots for plinking.

I have been using the Hornady XTP in .300gr for years now with good accuracy & they won't take up too much hunting funds.

That was the plan, but I can down load it on powder and shoot the lead bullets in the summer if I want to, not quite as cheap as a round ball but those will not really stabilize in this twist.

Good choice ...I like my Traditions Pursuit..had it for the past 18yrs, never had a problem.

Rick has some Mini's at $0.20 each, the XTP rounds should be about $0.65 each with sabot and bullet and the lead cast will be about $0.29 each with sabot.

It's not only an economical option for plinking, it has been my bullet/sabot of choice for hunting for several years now.

The biggest cost now for ML shooting is the powder...I think I paid around $60 for a lb of BH209....

Triple 7 is about the same cost as black, Blackhorn is now $80 / 10oz at Cabelas, I will probably start there for powder, yes it is costly but not as bad as $1.50 a shot for blister pack bullets that are exactly the same as the $0.60 ones if you just buy pistol bullets and sabots.

Rick will cast soft lead if you ask, he has a .430 mold at 300gr, soft lead and no lube would work just fine, he also has .452 molds for pistol bullets in a sabot as well as 2 different Mini bullets for the 45 for $0.18 each.

Not actually true, the energy of the substitutes is greater for the same weight, they are less dense. 777 for example is about 75gr by weight for 100gr by volume. So an 80gr by volume load is about 60gr by volume and your can of powder is sold by volume. So, when you compare to smokeless you save about $20 over the entire volume of your powder, Pyrodex is even cheaper, Blackhorn 209 is just god awful expensive, ha ha.

I e-mailed Higginson's to confirm....YES they still sell a pound of T7 for $32 ! Heck of a deal, 1/2 the cost of BH209...

Almost the same cost as smokeless then, but I am now reading about the crud ring, I guess the primer has to be right to reduce this.

The ML specific primers do reduce some of the crud, but it's really not as big an issue as some make it out to be. Especially if you're using tight sabots that scrap the barrel with every load.

I've used T7 for many years and just got into the habit of running a wet swab patch down the barrel between shots to maintain consistency between shots. It adds a step, so it isn't an issue.

I've used both T7 and BH 209 powders, and would never go back to T7. Dirty as all get out, as MikePal said, swabbing generally required between shots, definitely required after 2-3 shots.

No swabbing/crud ring with BH209. You pay more for the convenience, but if you shop around, you can find it for an ok price (still more expensive than the alternatives). I bought another container at Cabela's in the fall on sale for $60 plus tax. I worked up a load of BH209 in my CVA this fall and shot about 25 rounds and did not have to clean the barrel until I put the MZ back in the safe.

Fox you save $20 per pound of powder used or about 50%.

I’ll go one farther and say that you can achieve the same results as 777 at about 36 grains but in the end you save zero dollars as you shoot more!

Congrats on your ML and my two cents - go with BH209 if your gun is capable. That stuff works so darn well it’s crazy!

I’ve shot both and it is no comparison on four of the guns I’ve played with.

My opinion only your mileage will vary!

Don’t forget the increased velocity - that alone makes every black powder gun capable of using bh209 a 200 yard plus outfit.

No, based on the actual weight of the 777 powder it is a lot closer than what was quoted, 75gr for a 100gr by volume load, so if you are using an 80gr by volume that is only 60gr by weight. So, compared to the 40gr weight of the smokeless you are only saving 33%, with a cost of $32 for 777 and $36.50 for a cost of smokeless you are saving $0.07 per shot when you shoot smokeless over 777 powder.

When it comes to velocity, 777 to Blackhorn 209, looking at about 30fps at maximum load, not really worth twice the cost to me. I know that it will be dirty but it is a muzzleloader. Budget is a very big deal, if I wanted a clean muzzleloader and had no concern for budget it would be a smokeless one but that is not the case so cleaning is something that comes with the territory. There is a significant jump though with the substitutes from standard black powder.

I thought it interesting that T7 was in the lead with the smaller charges. They about tied at 105 grains. Then BH took the lead with 115 grains. I didn't go to 125 grains because the recoil with 115 was about all I wanted to deal with in the little X7.

By the way, my hunting load of 105 grains of GOEX FFFg under that same bullet averages 1550 fps.

80 grains most accurate- not sure what they tried but we used same sabots I use in my smokeless rigs. 100 to 110 we found sub MOA but you need decent components

110 Grain loads produced velocity of1970 +/-, my Labradar does not lie Mike.

One of the guns put up 2003 on one of those loads as well. Barrel length will make a difference with BH209.

Quite frankly every gun will shoot differently depending on bore diameter and other factors and while this guy used the same for both it isn’t the hallmark of testing. Neither is what I did rather it’s my observation.

I’ve seen 100 grains by volume of 777 produce 1600 fps with a 300 grain pill - explain that one....

I gave you my two cents from what I have seen with my equipment and my two eyes not what someone else typed up and put on the internet....

You give me 1900 plus fps and you have given me a two hundred yard capable gun....

Your math = not so good. Lol but I get what you are getting at!

Here is what I was saying;

If I use 40 grains per load and you use 60.... that means that 40x1.5=60 no?

That means that you use 50 percent more powder than I do for the same velocity. We are both right just looking at it from opposing ends of the calculation.

Guys velocity and cleaning isn’t the only reason to use bh209, the accuracy is very good. Velocity is subject to all relevant factors and are not a constant. 30fps gain is not consistent with what I have seen.

But who cares, as long as you are continuing the muzzleloader quest then it’s a win!

Triple 7 will work just fine as you guys point out. Use whatever the heck you like for that matter.

Budget is budget after all and if triple 7 fits have at it.

Funny thing is Jack.... I've actually gone backwards..the last two ML's I bought are using Goex FFG ..true 'Black' power, the dirtiest powder you can shot. It's not an issue with me, swab for shot consistency and then lovingly clean up afterwords.
A day on the range making smoke is what I find joy in and the more guys that join will only strengthen the sport.

Now, take the cost of a single shot of 777, a 100gr load by volume weighs approximately 75gr, an 80gr load by volume weighs in around 60gr.

Now, there are 7000gr in a lb, so at 60gr there are 116 loads to the pound and a 75gr load gives 93 loads of 777 and 175 loads of your smokeless.

1lb of 777 = $32 / 116 loads = $0.28 per shot
1lb of 777 = $32 / 93 = $0.35 per shot
1lb of smokeless = $36.50 / 175 loads = $0.21 per shot

So, each shot of your smokeless saves you 7 cents of 14 cents depending on the load

Now that I worked out the cost we can look at velocity, I will be looking at a 300gr bullet.

Smokeless (44gr) - 2218fps

777 FFg (100gr by volume) - 1814fps
777 FFg (90gr by volume) - 1779fps

If I shoot 40 grains of powder and you shoot 60, your charge weight is fifty percent more than mine.

It’s simple math - I also told you that you were correct because you looked at it from the 60 Grain perspective saying 40 grains is 2/3 of your 60 grain load.

The velocity numbers you posted above don’t mean a thing in the real world. Buy a simple shooting chrony and you may be surprised at the discoveries you make.

I really do recommend buying a cheap F1 chrony. I used one for years and it really does help understand what YOUR GUN WILL DO!

Thank you, I have a chronograph, does not work very well with black powder, from personal experience on a blackpowder rimfire project.

My math has to do with cost, I really do not care about the velocity to smokeless as the point is moot, I have not bought a $1000+ smokeless muzzle loader, I have purchased a decent entry level gun to get into the sport.

My math had nothing to do with power or the load weight, it has to do with cost, the cost of smokeless is slightly higher than 777 and the weight is slightly lower, so your savings on using less powder is moot, as my math shows.

Velocity in the real world matters at long range, nowhere did I say I would be hunting at long range, if I had the money I would be buying a 58 flint lock and shooting round balls only with a maximum range of 75 yards.

I never slammed smokeless, I said it was extremely cost prohibitive, 200 yards means nothing and with the same exact bullet the BC variation based on the 500fps difference is not all that significant.

I have zero practical knowledge? Do you shoot with me? Do you hunt with me? Exactly, I never bash your knowledge so back off on mine, you have no idea who I am or what I do so please keep your personal comments to yourself, I was posting about the rifle and you steered this well off course, nothing like trying to get into a sport and being bashed for a lack of practical knowledge.

I know how guns work, ballistics charts are guides, but the guides are relative and are something to compare to, to until I can actually get my hands on the gun and compare I really do not know, but neither do you.

I would not be using BH209, I enjoy shooting my guns and I could afford to shoot with BH209 is any real capacity so if that were my only option I would sell the muzzleloader, it would not be worth it for me. I have specifically looked into options to be able to shoot this gun on a regular basis with the use of cast lead bullet to reduce the cost, at over $1 for the powder and $1.50 for the bullet it is up there with sabot slugs, which I cannot shoot every weekend, $0.28 for the powder and $0.30 for the bullet I can justify the money to go out and shoot. I personally cannot dump $100 on an afternoon at the range, shooting does not have to be an expensive sport but it is really easy to make it expensive if you want to.

Enjoy your smokeless muzzleloader, I think the idea is great but it is very impractical for many shooters, including myself, so I will shoot what I can.

After re-reading the posts I’ll apologize - it seemed to me that you were bashing smokeless but I may have got the wrong idea.

My first 10ml cost $528 out the door and that gun is still in our gang so it’s not necessarily going to cost a 1000. I saw a guy had one for sale in summer for $650 shipped with a pile of pills. Didn’t last 10 minutes but you see them time to time.

My comment about zero practical knowledge was specific to the ML adventure you just started.
Posted numbers are someone else’s experience not yours. I’m trying to tell you not to rely on them solely. See what your gun likes and go from there.

A good friend of mine shoots cast bullets in sabots with Jim Shockley Gold and he gets good results with his ML. That stuff is terrible in my experience but it works real well in one of his guns.

He also shoots triple 7 but in hunting season BH209 is used in his knight disc.

You can buy a bunch of stuff based on the price tag alone but what you will end up with may not work well with your gun.

My buddies and I approach shooting this way, if one guy wants to try a load or bullet combo be it CF or ML and another guy has the powder and pill we give each other a few to try with the powder and off they go. We have all gone down the road of buying this or that because it was supposed to work the best and only to find it did not work as advertised and on the shelf it sits. That’s money pissed away.

Don’t close your mind to 209 because of price. In the whole scheme of things a 70 dollar bottle of bh209, if it works better in YOUR GUN, could last several hunt seasons.

That same line of thinking also applies to all cost scales. For example this year I opted to hunt with a specialty bullet out of the US. It was pricey but had a good BC and worked well at range. Terminal performance was not ideal. Bullet went to pieces on impact. Yes the deer were DRT but I lost some meat that I shouldn’t have so back to the drawing board I go.

I’m done with this thread either way. I think you and I don’t see eye to eye on much so I’ll try to avoid your threads.

We have a buddy that will be joining our 92B M/L only Controlled hunt group. He was looking to spend $800.00+ tax for a new TC M/L. I found him an almost new Savage 10MLii on CGN for about the same price. I never thought I would see the day when a smokeless savage is the same price as a new inline black powder gun.... :)

You choose to spend what you choose to spend, he would not have needed to spend $800 to get into the sport with a very viable muzzle loader but a savage smokeless for $800 is a really low price too.

Well, the whole thread is moot now, they cancelled my order and offered me a really sub-par replacement option at a significantly lower discount than what was on the pursuit, so now I am sitting on a bunch of useless cabelas gift cards.

Well that sucks. I guess an option would be to see if anyone is planning on a purchase from Cabelas that would be willing to buy the cards from you for face value or something close to it. Then you would have cash to spend at the store of your choice.

There is no such thing! There's always something to buy there. Or you could just wait until the next sale on muzzleloaders.

That gun is not going to be brought in again, these cards will sit for a while, I am on new baby budget for hunting.

The fact that this gun is so light that my wife could also use it meant a lot, I talked to the local shop and I know there price, I will not be able to get cash for the Cabelas cards but tax returns are not that far off so it may be in the cards down the road. I am glad I have a few months to figure it out before the hunt.

Oh, I also bought pretty much everything I need from other sources over the last 2 years, new scopes, bullets, powder, Chronograph, reloading dies, etc, not much tickling my fancy at Cabelas and not at full price for sure.

There are a whack of good gun shows coming up in the next few months...you may find a good deal at one of them. There aren't many ML's at them, but there are a few.

My muzzleloader is very light in comparison to many of my other rifles and shotguns. I'm sure you can find another that fits that requirement.

Cabela's has some really good quality hunting/hiking boots. If you can find them on sale, you could get a good deal.

I bought boots too a couple years back, lifetime warranty :), I know I can figure something out but I better sit on it and make sure it is something I need.

I am going to stop at the local shop on Friday and handle a few more, the CVA wolf is 6.25lbs and feels really nose heavy to me, hence the Pursuit's chrome moly barrel, sets the weight back into the shoulder. My wife cannot really do well with a heavy gun, a fully loaded Win 94 is a bit of a stretch for her, but her Savage 340 works great, just barrel out front and a thin profile too.

Yes, I have a CVA optima, and it is light but nose heavy. Big, thick barrel with hollow, plastic stock...

seen a gun during the hunt season where the guy filled up the stock with lead shot, gave it some balance and reduced the recoil.

I don't have any issue with the recoil from the rifle and I like the fact that it is light. I don't like the balance issue, but I can live with it. Now if I could just get the thing to shoot better.... I need to try some different bullets and go with loose powder.

Well, I always wanted to get a traditional style, ideally a flinter and a modern one. The guys from Cabelas came back to me, they had the Traditions Kentucky rifle on $100 off and knocked another $50 off for me, $349 for a round ball or PA conical shooting 50 cal percussion gun coming my way, the Pursuit is still on our list and will be picked up when the tax man gives me my money back, so a 2 for this spring, ha ha.

I should see it this week, then wait for gun shows to get the accessories, the budget will be blown on the guns so it will take the spring to get things sorted out for the range.

Congrats on yer percussion smoke pole Fox. Have fun with it and don't be surprised if you get hooked. I foresee a flinter in yer future. Keep yer powder dry Pilgrim...................................Daniel

It showed up in the mail, a lot lighter than I actually expected for 7lbs, still nothing my wife could hunt with but the 7lbs is spread out nicely.

Now my list for the gun show starts, it came with nothing other than the under barrel ramrod, so I have a number of things to pickup before I can shoot it.
