I’ve read that there are problems with hogs in the US. Huge problems. I believe there has been a lot in different areas over the bottom of Ontario that have active populations. Does anybody know the situation and what may or may not come of it?? I also read earlier this week a woman in the States died from bite wounds. They apparently put Kevlar bests on the dogs use to track them.???

There was a 3 around my area this summer I just looked at the map and its about 4 or 5 km off from where the sighting occurred and to the actual pinn on the map. I can't confirm the actual sighting but one of my kids friends saw them run across the road while on the bus home. Also heard a few other stories and it surfing on the social media in the area.
I tried looking for them , also heard they could of escaped from a near by pen so I can not 100 percent confirm. But the one pin on the map on 48 should be moved south a few km.

Oh and to be truthful they will only open the season when its alright to late. If they stay on track with what they normally do lol. No they say an open season will only educate them

Just need to make sure you have all your licenses for small game and obey your bylaws. Oh and dont shoot then in a pen I believe that happened last year.

I think you guys are a tad late on the trigger. Hogs can already be hunted in Ontario with a small game license under small game regulations. They're the same as varmint/predator....open all year. So far,the only hogs we're seeing are farm escapees that can be shot on sight if found running free outside the farm. Wild Boars aren't (as yet) found here,officially,although,there's been some unsubstantiated sightings.

I believe they are coming. Look at the damage they cause down south, and they are very aggressive. My US boss has been treed by them. he says they are smart and dangerous. We certainly don't want them up here.

i shot one and my girl friends dad shot another when we recovered mine, second one had hair up like a dog ready to charge from what i could tell and was shot at 5 yards, these were shot in nolfolk county, the boar weighted 185 pounds. Probably the only 2 around as no more have been sighted this was the week after thanksgiving and now the corns down so better odds of spotting them if there was more where we shot these 2Quote:

About 40 years ago, a bunch of pigs escaped from a farm east of us, they were lose for about 3 years, my buddy shot 4 with his .222 , I got 2 with my .243 and a few were shot by other coyote hunters. They did not expand their range nor did they expand the herd greatly to any extent.Quote:

Well,I talked to the relations and it seems my costing was out to lunch. They stopped going a couple of years ago when the outfitters started to charge guide fees of $200 per day per hunter. Their four day hunts including meals and accommodation were $250 per day PLUS the guide fees worked out to $1800 per hunter. They were only charged $100 per hog. Butchering,cutting,wrapping and flash freezing were included in the price. Not too bad,but,it's a damn sight more expensive than a Pheasant hunt. There's quite a few Wild Boar around western NY where the relations live and they thought they'd be able to hunt locally and save a bunch of money,however,the State of New York has adopted the theory that hunting hogs results in increased breeding sending their population much higher. I'd say it fits here as well as anywhere.
Attacks on people are NOT as rare as the article may try to have you believe.
Deaths( human) from hog attacks are rare, but attacks are fairly common.
In the past attacks have been in Rural locations, but the number of Urban attacks is making a sharp rise as feral pigs begin to colonize the parks and green spaces of towns and cities.

Texas, Arkansas, Alabama, Florida.. not exactly know for ‘liberal governments’... they have huge and growing wild hog problems and they have year round hunting.... the issue is one of biology and behaviour... hunting has not resulted in controlled wild pig pops period...
one sow can have two litters per year, with an average of 12 piglets per litter... it’s like rats and mice... kill 90% of the herd and they are still back next year larger...
when hunted, wild pigs separate and don’t herd up... it’s the reason why some jurisdictions instituted a not hunt policy, as you kill 1 or 2 or 3, the remainder splinter, and breed, they the feed only at night... the focus on trapping the herd and killing them at that point...
Let's wait a couple of years to see if hunting or no hunting makes a difference. So far,the prevailing train of thought from western New York residents is that it doesn't because anecdotally,they're seeing more and more all the time with ensuing damage to crops and fields that they didn't have to deal with before. Anti-hunting "academics" can argue all they want in the short term,but,time will certainly tell and whoa unto them if they're proven wrong. Hunting cannot stop pigs once they establish.
Theres an episode of Meat Eater on Netflix where Steve goes to a ranch in Texas. The biologist in charge of the ranch kills thousands of pigs a year, mostly through trapping as hunting cant come close to the numbers trapping does. He cant stop them on that relatively small property.
Unless they come trotting over the bridges at Sarnia, Windsor or Niagara, I think we will see them first at Manitoba ? I think the StClair, Detroit and Niagara rivers are a bit wide and fast for them ?

Have noticed couple dug spot in hay field just thinking coyotes or fox have been digging at mouse or mole rabbit holes
I know of 1000ths of acres of bush that sees little human traffic that kinda scary if hogs are smart enough to hide out there till corn crop/soy crop is knee high

According to friends that hunt hogs in the US on a seasonal basis,they say .270Win 150gr SP does a fine job on hogs. In fact,.223
and .243Win varmint/predator loads work well,too. They're not hard to kill. Doesn't Elgin County have a .243 by-law?
i'm always curious about the restriction on the farmer's right to defend property. say my neighbour who doesnt hunt, he's allowed to shoot nuisance coyotes. no one will bat an eye or ask what kind of rifle he used. not advocating for being the mushroom eater when yogi bear writes a citation... just thinking out loud...

Wild pigs have no protection under the FWCA. They are similar to ground hogs in that they are not a game or furbearing mammal. Therefore only a small game license is necessary for hunting them. The meat and hide do not need to be used.
When protecting your property, no small game license is required.
Escaped domestic pigs are someone's personal property. From a legal perspective, they are no different than shooting your neighbour's dog. There is no provincial statute preventing you from shooting it, but your neighbour could sue you for destroying their personal property.
How do you know the difference between a wild pig and an escaped domestic pig? You could ask it nicely, or just SSS. The likelihood of getting sued over killing an escaped pig is much lower than getting sued over a family pet, but you should know what you're getting into.
Most farmers who keep hogs will not want the pig back due to biosecurity reasons. the small time farmer might appreciate it but as a small time hog farmer myself, i know how difficult it would be to wrangle the animal into a trailer. I personally would rather it shot and we can worry about what to do with it after. I would be immensely thankful if someone shot one of my escaped pigs.Quote:

If they are not ear tagged then there is no obvious marking that shows they are domestic, good luck suing because a neighbour shot one.
