New 27 Nosler Revives the .277

The prelude to the article will make Fox happy....he's not the only one who disses the .270

The 6.5 Creedmoor had just been introduced and would soon become the dominant centerfire cartridge for a new generation of shooters and hunters. Like the submerged and unseen bulk of an iceberg, those other factors were what ripped the hull out of the status quo that had kept a handful of cartridges floating at the top of the sales charts year after year. Some cartridges, such as the .30/06 and .308, kept chugging along. Others, such as the .270, sank like jettisoned ballast.

Today, as a result, cartridges that don’t have a reputation for superior accuracy—​backed up by success in competition—or that don’t fill a specific niche are having a rough go of it. As one of the great general-purpose big-game rounds of all time, but one with no competitive accolades, the .270 couldn’t keep up and has fallen on hard times.

Intro to the next great cartridge....the 27 Nosler:

It's nice to see developers still working and the numbers are impressive. I personally will wait to see if it can hold enough market share for ammo, components and rifles to be commonly available.

What will the cost of ammo be? How available will ammo be? What bullets are going to be available?

Is it going to be better for "me" then a 7mm calibre?

I think there is, or markets are leaning towards, a resurgence in Long Range shooting. A lot of the shooting developments seem to be flavouring long range gear. I think the new ballistic scopes are a big reason, you don't have to do all the calculations by hand and the hit probabilities are much better.

This is also evident in the Muzzle Loader world, a few new long range guns on the market.

For the record, I don't diss the cartridge, I just really have problems with the jerk who pushed during my formative years, ha ha.

The .277 bullet is quite rare for hunting cartridges, there are 4 that you will find out there.

The 6.5mm and the 7mm now have so many more cartridges around and a huge variation in bullet weights.

The 6.5mm from Hornady there is a range from 95-160gr
The .277 from Hornady there is a range from 100-150gr
The 7mm from Hornady there is a range from 120-190gr

Maybe bringing in some new .277 bullet cartridges will boost the bullet options for the 270 and some better BC numbers as well, if the consider these cartridges target cartridges like the 6.5 CM and the 6.5 PRC.

Just saying I'll wait to see if it catches on.

I don't mind "safe queens" if they have history, but not one that just has little or no use to me.

I dont understand how a cartridge (6.5cm) that has less energy and 7inchs more drop at 500yds can dethrone a 270? The only thing it beats it in, is having less recoil. The only trend were seeing is newer shooters are more afraid of recoil than in the past..lol. Nothing wrong with a smaller lighter recoiling rifle, and if it makes a shooter have more confidence in their ability then all the power to them.

Funny you mention this. I just had a conversation with Luke at Arrowhead rifles about a new build that I would like him to price.

I’m thinking of doing a 6.5 ML as a longe range 1000 meter firearm.

The benefit to this is next to no extreme spread. On ten shots I would see under 10 FPS ES most times I don’t see over 3 FPS spread in three shots in 458 cal.

The 358 ML I had would spit out a 2650 FPS reading over and over and over again.

Taking the case out of the equation changes much.

He suggested I not dismiss the 458 for that distance as it currently is being achieved.

I intend to test his theory late this year.

It does but it's so much more work to get the 270 to catch the CM in the accuracy department. Couple that with brilliant advertising and the CM being designed for an AR platform makes a great selling chambering.

Parent case makes a big difference in accuracy. It's a strange phenomenon, take the 308 vs 30-06, the two are so close that it's difficult to see much ballistic difference. The 308 is still near the top as the most accurate chambering for extreme long range but the 06 seems to crap out and it's very difficult to make it group beyond 500 yards.

Like with many things in life,advertising is key to a success-and it is also a dirty business.
I will toot my own horn(or someone else's who pays well-or where there is some new interest-or else)so people will pay attention(maybe not knowing any better-not having chance to learn from wide selection of different sources-or just plain and simply complacent to find their ways).Everything is for sale,and there are always new buyers.

I used to read a lot from gun experts-so to say.Magazines,Internet,Youtube.
Then realized- one pushes something this year,same one will push something else next year.

Either to "support"a product-or to fill monthly quota in the magazine.

The 6.5cm is just a shadow of the 260. What does one do that the other can't?, nothing. The 260 sure didnt dethrone the 270...lol, and what more can the 6.5cm do then a 260? Look at factory hunting rifle offerings in 270, they have hardly fell from grace.

I have to admit Jack, I never considered long range shooting of an ML a possibility until I read of the success you've had. Your threads really changed my opinion to that possibility.

With that new CVA Paramount shooting those .45 280 gr ELRs out past 500 with 100 grs of BH209..it opens up a few doors for guys who want to take up long range shooting.

There is absolutely nothing a 6.5cm can do in a hunting rifle that the 270 cant do better. Without marketing and advertising we all know how well the 260rem dethroned the 270win....lmao

Of that I wouldn't have much of a clue. I have never paid much attention to the real big boomers. I had a Lapua for a while but sold it because it was useless to me.

All my moose fall to an arrow and at 25 yards the Lapua is way too much.

Marketing is how things work, Beta was better than VHS yet it died, it happens all the time.

The 270 is a fine cartridge at range but it kicks too hard for many shooters. The 260 Rem became a commercial cartridge yet the 6.5-06 never caught on, compare the 6.5-06 to the 270 Win, that is the long range 6.5 that they should have made, but the long action really hurts it, you cannot run that cartridge in many actions that companies are using now.

The 35 Whelen is probably the most efficient 30-06 variant yet it is pretty much dead, all marketing or lack there of.

That's exactly my point, marketing and advertising does not make something great. It can be used to make people believe there buying into something that's better then it actually is. The 6.5cm being a great example, it does nothing better then a 260. I still have a hard time hearing a 270 kicks to hard.

You may find it difficult to believe but we have pointed out on numerous occasions that the 270 kicks around the same amount of the 30-06, which is a lot of recoil for many hunters out there, hence one of the reasons why the 308 has become so popular, it has a noticeable decrease in recoil.

The 6.5CM is just being pushed right now, what happens in 5 years is yet to be determined. It is possible but not likely that the 270 Win dies in 5 years, less likely that the 30-06 and 308 die in that time frame, more likely that the 303 Brit becomes obsolete in that time frame, due to a lack of new firearms chambered in that cartridge.

The 270 and the 308 recoil are identical, the 30-06 has slightly more. The reason the 308 took off is because of military use, just like the 30-06 before it. The 223 is the same. It will take alot longer then 5 years for the 270 to die....lol

Marketing seem to be favouring the 7mm-08 and the 6.5 CM for the time being...all pretty much the same as the .270.

As far as I can see no difference to a sub 200 yd deer hunter...but for long range shooting there are slight differences.

Yes the 308 and 270 virtually indentical..

I start to think the advertisements and the new cartridges do nothing else then the new Windows 8-Windows 10 etc, or the new I phones do-try to make better sales.
With so many 270,308,30-06 etc out there,how to make the users buy more guns????(more sales for the gun/ammo makers).

Put a new caliber out,people will rather buy one they do not have ,then another of the same they have,,,,,,,,,,,,clever.

And if the new one kills some old ones along the way....so much the better(for them).
End users will see not much of real benefits.

I made some small mistakes perhaps, here and there-sorry for that.

Seems 308 rules in hunting calibers,with 12 gage-50 cal and 22 LR in other categories.
My note on 308-many guns here are perhaps sold as plinking - shooting platforms,not hunting arms.Which makes 30-06 being the "second"first.

You are right Mike- in rifle calibers then the sequence of top sales(based on the list of 91)is : 223-308-7.62x39 - 30-06.

I have yet to hear /see someone hunting with 7.62x39 or doing any serious target shooting(mass plinking yes),but i may be mistaken.
Cheap Chinese guns and Russian ammo makes this cal go so high on the list.But-for sure, it is on it, high up.

In the states the 7.62x39 is way more than cheap Chinese and Russian guns/ammo. The fact that you can use an AR platform and run this cartridge with pretty good accuracy has made it a decent deer, hog and varmint round in many places. The ruger mini thirty is another one that is a commercial gun chambered in 7.62x39. There are also a number of bolt action guns chambered in this cartridge, yes the majority of the rounds are shot for fun but so is the 308 and 223, both NATO rounds, cheap and easy to find.

For the 7.62x39 there a number of commercial loads, up to 150gr, and they can be very accurate in bolt guns and the AR platform.

Americans never embraced European Ammunition ( ie: #41 .303) so not surprised at the 6.5 being near the bottom of the list. The fervor with the 6.45 CM has seen a rise up in it's popularity ( 13% increase in sales over past few years) showing it's becoming more main stream.

In north America the trend is make money spend money

Americans never embraced European Ammunition ( ie: #41 .303) so not surprised at the 6.5 being near the bottom of the list. The fervor with the 6.45 CM has seen a rise up in it's popularity ( 13% increase in sales over past few years) showing it's becoming more main stream.

Not exactly sure how you can draw any definite conclusions as to caliber popularity when using data for only a single month, especially since it is based on firearm sales, and not ammo sales. Get rid of the non rifle calibers, and the 270 moves up the list. Remember, thirty years ago no was buying Russian or Chinese SKS guns. Excluding the flavor of the month guns, I still see the 270 as one of the top 5 center fire rifles (others being the 223, 308, 30-06, 30-30)

.270 (tried and true) will be around long after the "new" things are long gone.

For sure the .270. like the 308. 30-06....they have captured a 'market share'. But they are no longer the new kid on the block and lots of competition out there from manufactures to grasp the attention of new shooter/hunters.

The principle of Quality Assurance is that random sampling proves out trends ..taking a look at a single month versus a whole year would give you an acceptable +/-.

They both will prolly hold their place for another century. Not many cartridges have staying power like them.
