Not in Caledon the odd one
stop spreading the panic! :) local birds surely
Maybe they know the season opens this weekend in the south
Really. I have been waiting all summer to get the pup on some birds. Is it a location you can share or is top secret.
I live in London as well.
Pssst It opens Friday just don't tell anyone else. On a side note the limit for Woodcock and coots are listed together. Always wondered if this means 8 each or and aggregate limit of 8 including both woodcock and coots. Never had an opportunity at coots but always wondered why they are grouped together.
What in the world is a coot? A snipe?
I could see snipe and woodcock grouped together as have run across rare occasions where found both in the same general vicinity. Coots are more deep marsh birds. Honestly they look like the prodigy when a seagull and a duck get together. Supposed to be decent eating though.
Hearing reports of lots of woodcock from Minnesota. Perhaps a good year for breeding success.
Coots are like ducks with bird bills they taste awful
You are totally wrong about the taste of coots. Like most game they must be cooked right and they are better than a lot of other wild game birds. A lot of the flavour of game meat hinges on what they eat. A merganser is almost inedible for obvious reasons. A coot is pretty much 100% vegetarian. In contrast the woodcock is entirely vermivorous (worm eating) and personally I find have quite a strong gamey flavour.
Was just my opinion, perhaps I had a bad one or not prepared properly.
Everyone has their own tastes, and that's why Jello makes 39 flavours
Put up two woodcock last Saturday and spotted 2 or 4 at last light the night before... I'm past N bay, close to the top end of the range I believe.
Why?Quote:
A merganser is almost inedible for obvious reasons.
I ate coots, nothing special, just another stinking waterfowl ;)
but then I ate mergansers too, I guess I didn't know they taste that bad LOL
I'm not sure how you can recognize seasonal migration anymore for the species, as there are so few remaining birds in the population. It hasn't been obvious in the area I live, since at least the late 1980's. You are very lucky if you still have huntable numbers coming through in your area. I'm 50 now, and was fortunate enough to experience the hunting that we had before the continental population plummeted. I never had a dog as a kid, but it truly would have been a blast. During the two week fall migration pulse, it was common to put 15-20 birds out of a 5 acre swale. Find a patch of grey alder/willow, with a bit of upland balsam poplar, and the ground was literally white with poop. Even without a dog, you'd flush a bird every ten yards. The bonus would be the grouse. The coyotes didn't really pound my area prior to the mid to late 1980s. Even without a dog, a walking hunter could flush at least 10-12 birds per hour in good habitat. What a change in 30 years!
Check out the latest Woodcock trends for the 2015 Central population. Better than the east, but we've still lost almost 60% of our birds since the late 60's, and we're still losing almost another 10% per decade.
http://www.fws.gov/migratorybirds/pd...atusReport.pdf
Often wonder why the daily limit hasn't gone down on these birds. We all know there has been a steady decline in numbers yet no moderation in limit. Sure some will say its not hunting that is the problem but lack of habitat. Even if that's the case less habitat less birds should translate into less take eh?
Woodcocks were plentiful near Shining Tree last week.
Any recommendations in the Cambridge area? I'm thinking next year of getting a permit with the Grand River Conservation Area and taking the year to train my puppy springer. I'd like to get into upland in general.
Woodcock are not something I have ever targeted nor have I shot one. Since getting the dog he has flushed a couple while out grouse hunting, but I'm not good at going out and targeting them. I would love to actually hunt for them and shoot a couple, I'm sure once the dog retrieves a couple he would become a woodcock machine and perhaps I'd find them in more places. My goal for this year is to bag a couple. Last year I was out of the country during the peak migration for 2 weeks so I didn't get into them. This year it's going to be a priority.
let's make it 2015 wc tread?
I visited my honey hole for the first time and was very disappointed - only 2 flushes. I think wc might be in different areas due to very dry August.
Hunting between North bay and temagami. Moved 12 birds.
how long were you out for to move the 12 birds ?
Short hunt on Friday in my "hotspot" near Midland. Flushed 8 birds, shot zero, the brush was way too thick and they were very skittish. I was flushing them out at 10 yards.
Went back again Saturday and couldn't find any. Scoured 3 different places in Simcoe county sat/sun. Managed to flush 2 grouse but no shot taken.
about 2 hours. These birds were the hardest flushing woodcock I have ever encountered in my short hunting career. These birds were jumping 20-30 feet over birch trees then taking off. it was intense. It's the first time I traveled north to hunt them before the flights move south. It was a very challenging shoot to say the least. The dog worked like a champ and held steady for majority of the birds.
I considered going up there as well but I was told by many of the large operators that they did not have a lot of Woodcock mostly grouse
It does sound like a very challenging scenario and enough birds to keep you going
What kind of dog do you have
Cool sorry I couldn't tell from the picture mine is a wire hair Pointing Griffon are you finding any birds locally?
I can remember may be 25 or 30 years ago we hunted deer the first week of November and I was on a watch and just a dark a flight if woodcock landed around me must have been near a hundred birds .pretty cool to see .we were in a over grown fallow muck feild that was boarder by birch and tag alders .never seen anything like that before. Dutch
Nothing near London. My 2 favourite spots showed zero birds - if they were there my setter would have found them.
You guys are killing me
They are filtering in. Put up six on Sunday. Only got a shot at one, and a tree branch gave its life to save it.
We walked a new place which looks like woodcock haven today, but found 0 birds, I only spotted chalk in one spot.
It looks quite dry, I need to find a real swamp.
Hopefully they hit the London area soon, I'll be up there the next two days hunting. Will let you know if I come across any.
No flushes in the bush I tried yesterday. I think it's still early for flight birds.
Flushed 6 in the south yesterday, managed to put 3 in the game bag with a bonus grouse....first one in 15 years! Of the 3 woodcock, only one had pin feathers and the other two were relatively clean.
RB
Congratulations Red Bull nice outing how far south?
We just returned from upland hunting north of Sudbury. Woodcock were still there, but not in great concentrations. We had 22 WC flushes in 3 days and 5 grouse flushes. Grouse numbers seemed to have bottomed out in that region, never saw a single bird on the roads.
Thank you that is good information I am surprised at how are you numbers of gross you experienced
Thank you I will try to get out this afternoon and perhaps on the weekend as well and let you know
Moved eight woodcock today in the rain still local birds I think .
Did not see any at Hullet these past two days.
Forecast of 21'c all the way to Thunderbay with no cold snaps forecasted has them stalled. Was out Friday and moved the same few birds. In a typical season Thanksgivening would have me out everyday this year going to spend a bit more family time as next week is looking better.
Hullet the last three weeks, I put up 4, 6, and today 5. These are either locals or just a few birds moving through. But it's still just early October and I don't expect to see a lot of birds this early.
Not seeing any numbers yet in Simcoe County. This was the only one I flushed this morning.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...ps2wmrhhub.jpg
So, what does one do with a just a single woodcock? Why, brunch of course! :)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...psmwii37i8.jpg
Nothing on Friday, then put up 5 this morning in the same spot as Friday near Midland. Shot twice birds got away.
I tried giving my dog some cooked woodcock, fried in bacon no less, and all she did was walk circles around it. Wouldn't touch it. And this is from a dog that has eaten her own poop!
Woodcock taste great, I prefer it over grouse to be honest.
The forecast is for cooler temperatures and NW & N winds the next couple days. Time to get serious this weekend!
Only flushed one today, just south of London.
Still no woodcock flushed, only grouse
Just got back from a moose hunt in Temiskaminge Quebec ( 1 hr East of North Bay) and moved woodcock every day. Wasn't hunting them and didn't have my dog but saw plenty flying the bush roads at dusk and had a couple living on the soft green lawn of the camp I stayed in. So there are still some decent numbers 500 kms North East of the GTA. Should have just brought a shotgun and the dog, never saw a moose.
flushed 5 in the park today, and one near Newmarket yesterday (heavily used public spot)
Pheasant hunting tomorrow afternoon maybe I will flush a few woodcock at Exeter Game Farm.
Definitely on the move. Flushing one here and there. By the time I found the right spot torrential down pour forced a quick end of the day. In one spot flushed 5 in close proximity. Only got a clean shot at 1. A bonus snowshoe made for a bit of trash breaking opportunity. For those hardy hunters don't think you'll be wasting your time this weekend. For me Monday is going to be fun time however if Sunday doesn't look to bad may venture out also.
Wouldn't ya know it, I'm busy all weekend. Good luck everyone. :)
Headed over to Michigan tomorrow the woodcock have been filtering in all week.
Put up one woodcock today in the Windsor area
Put up 2-3 woodcock today (one might be same bird) just north of Barrie.
One near Newmarket
Simcoe County, 20+ flushes in under 3 hours this morning.

Great morning then

Ran into a blinding snowstorm on my way to the game farm and had to turn around ! Grand Bend was bumber to bumber with cars ! Go figure! My place was sunny and clear but 10 minutes north of me snow was falling.
Moved a few woodcock at hullet today in the "snow storm" along with a couple pheasants. Still thinking they are local birds though.
Bumped 5 today on a solo 2hr hunt, bagged 3 in WMU 87.
Way-to-go Ninepointer!
RB
Heading out this afternoon. It's -3 right now. High is only going to be 5. Should be a great day for a hunt
I was out today in the snow. Moved a few but couldn't get any shooting due to the snow in the trees. I only got one for one shot taken. They are definitely coming in now. This was North of London.
Well I can finally report that the dog has flushed some woodcock! He moved 2 this evening. I took a shot at the first but in my usual fashion I missed. He flushed the second one right after but my friend never even got a shot off. Wasn't expecting it as I wouldn't have thought it was typical woodcock cover. This was just northeast of Belleville. Really wish I could've knocked one down to really let the dog make the connection.
Got out this morning to a public bush and bumped three woodcock but one was most likely a re-flush. We didn't get any this morning, they seem to flush at the wrong time as soon as you bend down under a branch lol. This was with no dogs so maybe there was more around who knows?
Was surprised by the amount of snow up towards the lake yesterday. Was a good 8" in places, thought it was gonna be a bust but turned out to be lots of birds around. Unfortunately I'd expect a bunch headed for more hospitable locales with it clear and below freezing again last night.

The young lad did well, accounted of 6 of the birds with a little less than a box of shells :D
http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j2...psa7uhydcf.jpg
Incredible! And congratulations to the smiling shooter! You MUST share with us that recipe.
Wow look at the snow! It was snowing while I was out yesterday a bit but not enough to show up on the ground. Wild!
I am turning green like the bell peppers in the photo :)
One flush today near Newmarket, clearly the birds were there yesterday.
3 flushes after work today, zero in the bag :(
On the bright side, I figured out Be2man's recipe and these timberdoodle poppers washed down with a bottle of Polish beer made everything better :)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...ps0qp7errd.jpg
Nice! I do a quick marinade with Soya, Worchestershire and brown sugar to taste. Works well wrapped around a water chestnut with bacon and no cream cheese as well, enjoy! Jalapeno's no bell pepper
Hit the same spot I flushed 2 on Sunday and no woodcock whatsoever. Will try again on the weekend.
Doing some yard work and flushed a woodcock sitting under the broccoli. Sure sign they are moving on through.
I think they just follow you
J16
LOL looking for their buddies eh?
Attachment 31102
hunted north of London yesterday. moved 7. Will try again this weekend:)
Me too!
Put up 5 this morning and got 2. I noticed they were very skittish and were flushing 10-20 yards ahead of me which made for tough shooting. I usually walk in a zig-zag and pause every so often but they got nervous and flushed way ahead so I just plowed through in a straight line. Not sure if this makes sense but it helped!
RB
FFF, you should take a poor lil fella and his spaniel out with ya lol
I'm the other way. I see you're in Vaughan.... do you hunt anywhere around that area or east towards me? I would be willing to travel a bit, but Hullet is fairly far. I am about 2 hours east of you. Would love to actually go with an experienced woodcock hunter. I am hunting blind, other than the dog. I'm sure I could learn a lot more about proper woodcock cover from an experienced hunter.
moved 10 birds in the local tiny spot - the most so far.
that's it? everyone's done?
17 flushes last night in GTA
Wow that's awesome
J16
7 flushes yesterday north of Barrie.
Heading out tomorrow
Went 2 for 4 yesterday north of London.
We expected to possibly find some flight birds up around Georgian Bay on Thursday and Friday, but only had sporadic flushes. It think we flushed 6 birds in the two days. One significant issue was the lack of water in our usual very good covers. The ground was still a little moist but we are often walking in 6-8 inches of water in the years when there have been lots of birds. We also ended up with 15 grouse flushes and that was down a lot from previous years.
Moved 7 in the rain today.
In years past, my North Bay area spot has still held woodcock in late October, but today we saw none. Also noticed that the beaver ponds were devoid of ducks. Looks like the migrating species have moved through. We did find some year-round locals though...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...psq7h4zzin.jpg
Nice well done !
Great work. The only thing your picture is freaking me out......LOL the only thing worse than red eye has to be them devil dog eyes there. Ya I know hunters first photographers second but there has to be an app to fix that. Good hunting guess its time to track further south to catch up with them woodcock.
I went out this morning, right after the rain stopped. Was hoping for lots of action but for 2.5 hours of walking only flushed 2 grouse and no woodcock... pretty disappointing day
The younger dog flushed two to day. Usually more than that in that spot... along the wet bushy side of the Thames outside London.
Saturday 24th Oct WMU 87
1st bush 0 flushes
2nd bush 2 flushes
RB
My pup moved two today near Stratford while out for a bush walk. Pointed one and bumped the other. Not bad for a 4and half month old. I think they are around but not in huge numbers like after that freak snow storm we had. For a day or two, I think there were a lot of them.
Wish dogs could talk. I'm sure your buddy cares little that he didn't retrieve a bird. Getting out with you enjoying the day is reward enough. Not putting mouth to feathers will not diminish him in any way.
LOL I don't know about that. He's a spaniel after all.
Was out this afternoon for a few hours poor Elly headed for the swamp since it looked just damp but sunk up to her neck in muck. I thought she was a goner but managed to crawl out. She found a nasty old chukar from possibly the spring and presented it to me happier than a pig in . Never saw one bird this afternoon but it was a beautiful fall day.
Just finished 4 days of guiding for woodcock. They did really well and had three generation of English spaniel each guy had three dogs, lol. Lots of birds in the areas we frequent.
5 for 12 yesterday north of London area. went through a whole belt of shells! Shoulder is a little sore today lol
Can't think of a better reason to have a bad shoulder
J16
4 for 12 today north of Barrie today ... Approx 3 hrs in the field.
Wow Lorenzo was there yesterday and nothing
J16
Yeah that's how it goes with woodcock ... One day it's full and the next day you might not even see one!
Or you hit three blank coverts in a row and the next one is woodcock city.
I see we have this big storm forecast with winds from the SW, which ought to hold the birds. Later this week ought to be good.
6 flushes today, I wish I had more consistent spots like this one...
Went 4 for 5 this morning in WMU 87. First one took 20min to find, clean kill but hard to spot on the ground with so many leaves. Started to second guess it was a cripple but ended up finding it 1 yard away from my original spot/mark - go figure. Hopefully the pic is added below...
http://www.oodmag.com/community/atta...9&d=1445974511
Still a few around, hope this storm tomorrow keeps them around even longer!
RB
We have heavy rainfall coming in tomorrow and warmer weather for the next week (14 or 15 degrees every day). Going to get out Thursday night after work hopefully
Some fun woodcock videos: I think from last week in Michigan.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ujXkhGB6_c
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eCaWOK_VT_Y
Neat video however I'm sure if I ever showed up with a Go Pro strapped to my head Stella would die of laughter.
I have a GoPro I have tried wearing a few times... Takes nice video of the cover and the dog working, but you need bionic eyes to actually see birds flush.
Flushed 3 combining corn yesterday. East of London
Found 3 today north of Barrie ... One in the bag. Keep at it, they are still here but not for long!
Great Lor
Similar places? Did all of the water we got the last couple of days move them around at all?
J16
Shot 7 out of 19 flushed today. Couldn't hit that last bird. ;)
They're still around in the deep south.
Shot at one in Prince Edward county. Only 1 flushed
[QUOTE=joe16;933453]Great Lor
Similar places? Did all of the water we got the last couple of days move them around at all?
Hey Joe,
They were pretty much all in the same spots that I have been hunting them this season. My guess is that the storm moved some out and brought a few in. I'm thinking the bulk of them have come through where I hunt, however, there are always a few more that trickle through first week of November. Going to try again a few times next week and see how things go.
Lorenzo
Should be warmer hope that keeps them around
J16
Shot my first 3 woodcock and Elly's first time retrieving them this afternoon. She treated them like any other bird and delivered to hand.
Good show, Elly. So the woodcock retrieve isn't an issue. :)
9 flushed near Newmarket
5 wc and 2 grouse flushed in 15 min (ran out of daylight) near Barrie.
Hunted a new bush along the Thames River near Thamesville. It was totally unexpected to what I would find and was given permission to hunt this new spot. I really didn't think I would flush anything but this spot hasn't been hunted in many years. Going again tomorrow hopefully a few more still kicking around. After the first retrieve Elly put it into overdrive looking for more, kinda comical to watch. My son is coming with me tomorrow and is going to take some footage with his ipad. I will post it if we capture some of it .
:ashamed:Found out yesterday my 5 month old DD has no aversion to woodcock. He ate one whole...
6 flushed down towards Windsor
2 Newmarket
Tonight Glencoe area - had a dozen flying all around just before dark
Think the main flight is done folks? Halloween hunt north of London last week we had our best day yet. 12 for 25. lots of double flushes which made it really challenging! Hope to get out again before our pelee trip next week.
3 flushes near Newmarket, 2 birds were really tired.... looks like late stragglers
Four flushed today, probably only three birds. Pretty slow with some good spots coming up empty.
Flushed one today, Windsor area
I moved a couple on Pelee isl.
Where do you normally find woodcock? In a hardwood forest? At the treeline of a field?
I've done a lot of hiking and not sure if I've ever come across them. I've come across some grouse in algonquin a few times. Scared the bejeebus out of me when they flushed lol wasn't expecting them.
Sent from my SGH-I337M using Tapatalk
damp/wet ground , thick cover or young aspen growth has worked for me.
Thick damp spots that you might also find cottontail, thick with young trees such as sumac, ferns, somewhat clean forest floor so they can walk.
So in all likelihood if you're walking a beaten path you're not likely to flush many?
Sent from my SGH-I337M using Tapatalk
Yup. They'll be off the beaten path. Tangled hardwood thickets adjacent to old fields, with leaf litter on the ground and damp soil.
Most people have never seen one.
and I was hoping to see more reports... :( there're threads on habitat, incl. pics, use search.
I welcome any conversation
Found a bunch of them today all but 3 still there.
No worries
J16
Birds must be pushing through tonight
I live in north York and my pup just flushed one from the cedars in the back yard.
Watched it land in the neighbours yard.
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
one flush in GTA today.
I shot 5 today near London, 5 for 5.
They have greasier skin now and have thigh/belly fat.
Actually 6 for 6, lol
They're still here :)
Good to know. I'll be getting out soon. Just got home from deer hunting and the dog was laid up for the past week and a half with a badly torn pad. We're both ready to get back at it.
I didn't know they are still around. I guess they stay until the ground shows frost.
4 for 12 this morning, south of 401. Birds were scattered in groups with lots of blank territory between.
1 for 1 on tree trunks, same area. Dog disgusted with my shooting.
Hey Welsh,
Try Skeet choke with #8's
That's half the problem, I think -- choked too tight. But the other half is failure to keep the wood on the wood. ;)
Seen a third of the birds from last Sunday managed to knock down 3. A bonus was the sighting of a grouse. Dog started trailing something figured must be a pheasant. As I don't bother getting a municipal license really wasn't prepared for the point and flush. When a grouse lifted instead was to surprised too even bring up the gun. Seems quite a few have left could be the beginning of the end.
We put up a handful of woodcock each day while on Pelee for the pheasant hunt. That was last Thursday-Saturday. I'm going out this weekend hoping to find one or two more...
This morning: flushed seven (no repeats), shot at four, bagged three.
(This trick of getting your cheek on the stock works so well, you'd think you were supposed to shoot that way or something....)
LOL My girl put up one Friday; the birds aren't all gone yet.
Returned for a rematch Friday. few birds got a couple however this time grouse not so lucky
Attachment 31484
Moved 1 today in Prince Edward County. Crazy, Dec 12! No shot opportunity.
Wow, very late bird! Good job!
Could of been a wounded bird....how did it fly?
I'm thinking late migrant. Wounded bird would be recovered eventually we are not talking pheasant here. Tempted to go look into some hollows along lake Erie. With this weather sure there must be a couple left may be the first year in a while you can hunt them till closer.
I get scattered birds south of 401 into December ... I'm sure you'll find birds down by Lake Erie this year if you go looking.
Definitely not wounded - nor was he after our encounter lol. I'm going to be out this weekend again, probably my last kick at the can for doodles. Going on a big grouse hunt north of Kaladar Friday, took the day off. Probably too far north though for any slow migrants. We're still in the 10 degree area so not surprised they're still around.
