According to the Canadian Medical Association Journal, research just released shows, ' The majority of gun-related deaths in Ontario are suicides by men over the age of 45 who live in rural areas'. An astonishing 68% of guns deaths between 2002 and 2016, were from self harm, most by middle aged or older men living in rural Ontario , across all income levels. Why? Politics need not be involved in this discussion.
Yeh I watched Wild TV this week and they have a weekly show on the Canadian Gun Ban. They show a picture of a suicide by gun and it show's a handgun by the deceased body.I wonder what number of suicides are by handgun as opposed to long rifle.I think there are more by long rifle.
What was the actual number of deaths each year?
Alcohol related deaths about 15,000 per year and cost of 15 billion. Deaths by gun suicide don't even put a blip on the radar in comparison, about 260ish. Whats your point OP?
Maybe ban alcohol instead of guns, our country would be a far safer place with less cost to tax payers.

With the lockdowns, forced isolations, reduced mental and physical treatments, reduced physical activities due to COVID and exacerbated by the corrupt and incompetent gov't in Ottawa it will likely be very high for the period from March 2020 to March 2021+. Hopefully by the time the study on this years numbers is out we have a more honest and practical gov't in power
This is a bit dated (from 2008) but likely still a reflection of reality not too different in general... where firearms represent way less than 1/6 the total.

You can note that Suicides have similar numbers to falls ... and on a numbers look, firearm murders about the same number as die from falling out of bed.
Check the dates of the study, it was pre covid. Some folks are reading to much into it I think. I had no ulterior motive for posting the study. I am pro gun, I have guns, I like guns. Just trying to get some insight from the members as to why the numbers were so high for rural older gentlemen. This site has many in that demographic, so I thought it would be a good place to ask. I just asked why, with no politics wanted, needed or necessary in your deductions. I don't feel politics is the reason, old men are offing themselves at a greater % than the rest of the population.
Men have a lot to deal with adapting to this modern world. Things have changed a lot in the past 100 years... There are largely uncontacted tribal communities who live a very primal hunter gatherer lifestyle and suicide is not an issue. I dont think their average lifespan is much over 40 though.

Back to Suicides, looking at the 2008 diagram firearms were less than 1/6 the total deaths and with the expected spike this year in the total it will likely be nasty to see.

From what I see in rural areas and I am living there at least six months of every year social isolation and depression play a big part in these death's. If you have nobody to talk to and share your problems you can lose hope. If your access to a family doctor or other health professionals is restricted who might recognize signs,this is another factor.
As one who has lived rural for at least 50 years of my 64, I can offer a few theories. As we get older, many people find that due to deteriorating health issues, relocating closer to medical services is almost a must? Generally, that means packing up, selling the place and giving up on the lifestyle they love. The lifestyle of the city, that they so hated, is staring them down and they don't like it! Faced with few options, a lot of folks just lose their spirit and give up. Throw into the mix, perhaps they've lost their spouse, or it may well be the spouse who needs to move closer to medical care? Either way, it can cause a person to lose their lust for life.
Personally, I just can't imagine myself faced with the situation of having to pack up and move, but i know it may happen at some point in the future as I get older. For now, I just enjoy what I have and where I'm doing it.

There are people we can impact and I know I have someone I reach out to a couple times a week even if it is just a simple ping on email.
I look at it this way other than being terminally ill there is no other logical reason to commit suicide. Whether it be by gun, knife, pills, or whatever method one choses. As long as no one else is physically hurt in the process by all means go ahead and do it as only a lunatic would consider something so drastic and idiotic it's their life let them go ahead and do it in most cases the world will be a better place for it.

4.6 Link Between Overall Availability of Firearms and Suicide
The observed correlation between firearm availability and suicide in general (Killias, 1993; 1993a; 1993b; 1996; Gabor, 1994; 1995) is not as solid as some might expect. In Canada, provincial comparisons of firearm ownership levels and overall rates of suicide found that levels of firearm ownership had no correlation with regional suicide rates (Carrington and Moyer, 1994a: 172). Furthermore, the Canadian rate of firearm suicides has dropped without evidence of a similar reduction in the rate of firearm ownership.
At the very least, this observation suggests that the overall availability of firearms is not the only factor that affects the suicide rate, or even the rate of firearm suicides. There are frequent variations in firearm suicide rates that cannot be attributed directly to a change in the availability of firearms or of alternate methods. Carrington and Moyer (1994) observed that in some provinces, the rate of suicides involving other methods has declined since 1978 in a manner similar to that of the firearm suicide rate. They discovered no obvious reason for this and none attributable directly to the prevalence of firearms or the existence of new firearm regulations.

I would think the risk of losing your ability to own and use firearms after seeking help and being diagnosed or prescribed medications would certainly deter a lot of people. Especially if they have hunted their entire life or own heirloom guns.

I lost my Nephew who had Schizophrenia, he hung himself (so no gun) it was his second attempt. His father my brother inlaw had taken him earlier to the hospital.
An hour later he signed himself out (Prior to 2001 I think you could not do this, but the Liberals wanted to let people with mental issues run around).
Hi girl friend found him hanging in the basement he left behind a 1 year old little girl.

Rural people tend not to have benefits, they are generally not working in the city for big companies and there is less of a chance that they have benefits. The support by the current medical system for mental health is almost non-existent, if you need to talk to someone about your problems it cost you a ton of money, another thing that rural people tend not to have a lot of kicking around.
The reason why they use guns is because guns are what they have. If there were no guns they would jump off something or cut themselves, men unlike women, tend not to use pills but women rarely do something that will leave an ugly corpse, not sure why but this is the case.

My wife's Uncle recently just committed suicide, he was 85 years old and still healthy, but was suffering from depression. He jumped into a river 2 weeks ago.

I had a full right hip replacement on Sept 10th, The original date for surgery was May 8th. I was in and out in 24 hrs, and I have been back to the hospital twice in the last 6 weeks for the regular x-rays after such an operation. I imagine if your condition was fatally time sensitive you would move to the front of the line.

Your one of the lucky ones as of Oct 1, there have been 15000 delayed in Eastern Ontario everything from heart surgery to cancer treatments.
As I said I would like to see the stats on this if there were more deaths across Canada due to delayed surgeries vs Covid.
Most surgeries are not continuing just because you got yours now doesn't mean everything is fine for everyone else.

F ...No, I do not live in Toronto. GTA but not the city. Oh and while I was there for my xray this week, I was also given a cortisone shot in my right knee. I was having more pain in it than my new hip. Seems much better after having it. I knew my knee was shot already , but they will only let you do one or the other at a time, I chose the hip first.
Sorry, the GTA, that stands for "Greater Toronto Area" or "Toronto" to the rest of Canada. You have the best access to healthcare of any citizen. Try living up around Hearst, or Thompson, maybe Whitney, Denbigh, Bancroft, etc, etc, etc.Quote:

I grew up in SW Ontario, I know what it is to have access to everything at any time, sure you have to wait at the hospital if you are not serious, but at least you have the ability to get to a hospital. This is not the case in a good chunk of Canada, when you are seriously injured or having a heart attack in most places in this country you do not simply have a specialized hospital around the block. The original post here with respect to guns and suicide completely glosses over the fact that access to mental health care in Canada, especially to rural citizens is almost non-existent, and worse for those who are of limited means.Quote:
